Seems with gps id more accurate to fire them at a further distance and they could be towed to a position.

Modern technology does the job far more effectively and accurately, whether it's modern conventional artillery or aerial munitions.

The heaviest siege howitzers/mortars from back in the day were primarily concerned with busting permanent fortifications and concrete blockhouses. We can do the job much more easily from the air nowadays, and we're not really expecting to have to deal with large border forts or pillbox nightmares like the Hindenburg Line.

The 240mm Tyulpan is about as big as they get nowadays. The only real benefit of something that big is it allows you to fire fairly advanced guided munitions from the ground, and most western nations tend to favor just dropping bombs.

Always wondered why doesn't NATO adopt artillery pieces over 155mm. There are legit battleship shills here and there(including US congress) and guns like those or maybe little smaller(think 240mm range etc.) are the closest thing you can make to be a supplement for a battleship when you're outside of its reach.

More specifically, heavy artillery isn't used because western nations have not faced a nation which has both strong fortifications, and enough air deterrent to render bombing unfeasible.
If we run into that combination, you can bet massive calibre weapons will be in vogue again.

Now some modern and cute stuff, the Wiesel 2 "Mörserkampfsystem (MrsKpfSys)" - the mortar weapon system. A small tankette that packs a 120mm mortar on a swift and agile chassis, ideal to transport it with a helicopter, can be deployed alongside Paratroopers, giving a small group of infantrymen an immense firepower

Playing Combat Mission years ago.

Have two of these dug in behind a stone wall and let the lead elements of an American column get to a nice close range before opening fire.

They lasted about five crazy minutes before being knocked out but not before they fired like made and managed to destroy or damage about dozen halftracks, armored cars, and light tanks.

Have had a soft spot in my heart for this Infantry gun ever since.

The engagement in the Drobak Sound is pretty fucking great

>100 year old fortress, not modernized since the early 1890's
>So old it's been made a training facility for new recruits
>Only have three 50 year old 280mm canons, and an ancient torpedo battery
>Almost all the soldiers are new and have been there for a week, tops

The Germans know about the Fort, but ignore it because it's old

They are unaware of the torpedo battery, and the massive balls the guys in the fort have.

>The next morning
>0400
>Unidentified flotilla comes steaming up the sound
>Germans are confident there will be no action from the fort.
>The Norwegians don't know whose ships they are, but they'd heard about some shit going on up the coast from the fort

At this point the commander of the coastal guns says fuck it, whoever these guys are they came to the wrong neighborhood.

Gives the order to fire. The crew is like "What? You sure?"
The commander responds, famously:
"Either I will be decorated or I will be court martialled, Fire!"

>Lights up the German Flagship with 2 of the guns at 2000 yards
>2 good hits. Only a few guys are trained so no time to reload.
>Cruiser immediately starts burning, and loses power. Germans have no idea where the fuck the gunfire came from
>All hell breaks loose and the fort opens up on the cruiser and it's escort with all of its other small guns

At this point the ship comes right into the sights of the torpedo battery, whose commander was out sick. So they ran to get the retired former commander to come run it

>40 year old torpedos, no one knows if they even still work. Aimed by dead reckoning.
>The now freshly unretired torpedo Commander expertly lines the shot up and pushes the button
>They work flawlessly and the nail the same areas just hit by the guns
>Cruiser is now mostly disabled. One of the magazines ends up exploding, and the ship sinks
>6" guns are still blasting away at the flotilla
>Escort ships say fuck this, and retreat
>>
>>35149414
Fucking Epic!
