http://nationalinterest.org/blog/the-buzz/russia-says-its-mig-41-fighter-will-fly-outer-space-22153

>Russia's future MiG-41 fighter will be quite a machine. It won't just fly at supersonic speeds, but hypersonic as well.

>Even better, it won't even operate on Earth. The MiG-41 will fly in outer space.

>The MiG-41 will have a speed of almost 3,000 miles per hour. That would translate into a speed of about Mach 3.5. RIA Novosti terms the MiG-41 a “hypersonic” aircraft. It will also be armed with hypersonic missiles, and the aircraft can even be turned into a drone.

Sorry to be frank, but if I were F-22/F-35 NATO pilot, I would be feeling very, very nervous right now. Too nervous to fly near Russian airspace anytime soon I think.

Tell me m8 - the US built 180 F22s starting exactly 20 years ago, and now the first PAK-FAs (excuse, Su-57, since we're pretending they're not still prototyping) are rolling out.

How many super-duper-unmanned-stealth-hypersonic-buzzword aircraft is the USA going to have, once the first magic Russian dog-n-pony rolls out of the workshop?

Right right right, it's not the Soviet's fault, it's just that they were so thoroughly incompetent at every level of every organization that victory is ultimately impossible in every scenario, even when outnumbering the enemy. Thus we can only assume the plane is perfect, since real world data is unreliable when compared to feelings and wishful thinking. We must disregard its actual performance to truly understand what it is capable of тoвapищ)))

I am tired of "will be", "will have", "soon" and other whataboutism.
About ANY kind of weapon from any nation.
Give me capabilities RIGHT NOW. Give me records, give me operational experience.
But stop giving me bullshit pretentions.
As long as a weapon is not commissioned, operational, in significant numbers, with trained crews, and a solid supply chain, it is unproven, and therefore, a non-existent threat to anyone.

If you disagree with this, you may as well argue about how the americano-chinese federation spacecrafts will be superiors to the pan-african-European christian caliphate starships in 2247, and how the 24th generation russo-finnish orbital fighters are so much better than the 23rd generation south american-antarctican sub-gravitational interceptors.

Because yes, baseless claims from people seemingly knowledgeable or pretending to be so do sound THAT stupid.

1. They are under command of Suchoi now and in OAK.
2. Nothing that they told in reality (not in wasted fantasy translations of incompetent journalists) can't be achieved by modern technology.
Take an A-12, put ASM-135 ASAT inside, mount President-S system and modern autopilot. That's it, you have Mig-41. Can "operate in space", supersonic, high altitude, unmanned-ready system equipped with "battle laser". Max speed close to M3.3 and unit has "stealth elements".

Reposting an older comment I made...

The best jet engines can't work above ~30,000 m ( 100,000 feets ), some plane ( world record was a modified mig 25 which managed to reach 37,000 m) can go slightly above if they can build up speed and go into a parabolic trajectory ( where the pilot will be weightless ), however such a plane needs a Thrust to weight ratio above 1, many recent fighter planes do have a TWR>1 at sea level, the su-35 having above 1.5, but the thrust of an engine gets lower with altitude (since it can suck less air, so it has less reaction mass), besides assuming that you have a plane that can still have > 1 TWR at 100k feets you still need to have at least 5000 kph (3000 mph) of excess vertical speed to reach 100 km, the official limit of the atmosphere, but now you have another problem, because turbojets can't work above Mach 3, so you need a ramjet (and maybe even a scramjet) to reach Mach 5, and ramjet have a lower TWR (so you need more of them and a lighter fuselage to keep the plane's TWR able 1) as well as being less efficient (so you need more fuel, so your plane is heavier).

It isn't technically impossible, some jet-powered boosters have been designed to help rocket reach space, but it is incredibly hard to do on an unmanned plane with that only goal in mind during conception, you can imagine how hard it would be to make it on a stealthy, manned warplane with a power generation unit to power a laser and with tons of bombs

So don't count on it actually going Above the karman line unless it has magical Project Pluto tier engine or SRBs under the wings. At 2500 knots this could go Above 50,000 m though in parabolic flight

>MiG exists almost solely on government subsidies

All our "industry" except for oil-digging is unprofitable and exists solely on government subsidies.
I don't understand what's point in spending so much money on useless born-dead projects like Mig-41, Su-57, T-14, S-500, RS-28, new aircraft carrier and space warfare when the people in our country are in two steps from eating birch bark? It's clear we will never be able to compete with NATO neither in quality nor in quantity, since their military expenditures are larger than our whole GDP. Even if the 41 will ever be developed, Russia couldn't be able to produce it in any large numbers.
>>
>>35144074
Mig 25 (when compared to other planes of his age) an mig 31 were/are absolutely amazing planes, I know we're all joking about it but I really hope that MiG are making the ultimate interceptor.

The SR-71 has been sittig at te first position of "fastest manned air breathing plane" for too long, time to beat it!

I'm getting hard thinking about such beauty, even If it has large flaws that make it an awful war machine and huge cost I want another record buster for pilots with huge balls
>>
>>35144152
m8 do you realise that you only need to go above 100 km to be in space? The Russians never talked about orbit. You only need Mach 5 or so in initial vertical speed to reach space in a parabolic flight.
>>
>>35144108
I don't think you understand what "subsidies" means. LM makes a product, they get paid for it.

MiG can't make a profit, gets kept running by government funds.

Promising interceptor, designed to replace the MiG-31, will be supplied to the troops by 2025, Russian Air Force Commander Colonel General Viktor Bondarev, said 11 August 2014. "Since 2017 we start working with a prospective aviation distant interception complex that will replace the MiG-31. Now there are research works, then will be development work, and until 2025, I think it will go to the troops" - Commander said. Bondarev said that the development work, involving the creation of a prototype of the aircraft, due to start in 2017. In 2013, Bondarev said that the Air Force offered to create a new interceptor before the end of the current state armaments program, which ends in 2020. According to him, if such a plane will appear, he will be able by 2028 to replace the entire fleet of MiG-31 interceptors. Russian Air Force plans to not give up on the MiG-29 fighter aircraft, as these aircraft have enough reserves to modernize in order to remain in service for at least another 10-15 years.

Where's the $8.5 unaccounted for? There's a fuck ton of waste and accounting screw-ups that happen down to the lowest levels - eg: office buys 8 computers; one guy leaves so they puts his desk and computer in a storage room and everyone forgets about it. Boss does a tally of how many computers there and counts 7. Later someone's asking why they spent $16,000 in $2000 computers when there's only 7. Finances records $2000 as unaccounted for.

It reminds me when there was outrage and conspiracies spreading about how apparently F-22 production tooling had gone missing; turns out that (surprise, surprise) there's a fuck ton of production tooling and it can take months to physically check and inventory the contents of every storage crate, so it took them a few months to find every part.

>US has space corps
It seems unlikely for now:
>The current Congressional proposal to create a special Space Corps to lead U.S security programs for that realm likely will amount to nothing, suggested Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson.
http://spacenews.com/space-corps-proposal-will-fizzle-wilson-says/

It's more likely that we will see the return of US Space Command:
>HR2810 FY18 could re-establish the United States Space Command as a subordinate unified command under the United States Strategic Command not later than January 1, 2019. This bill also includes the creation of the United States Space Corps.

>>35149366
Yeah, that could work if they don't even think about having a high delta V, honestly they wouldn't even need the rocket part of the modified SABRE engine because the turbojet mode can already work up to 6000 kph and 30 Km, while keeping a high thrust ( 14 TWR at those speed! By comparison F22's engine has 7.5, and scramjets have 2 at most), so it would be enough to build up enough speed for a parabolic flight in space. However it would be really hard to put the technology in a fighter jet, even without the rocket part and the need for liquid oxygen tanks. The heat exchanger part ( that cools the air from 1200K to 100K) need some excess Liquid hydrogen to work well, so simply modifying the Engine for kerosene may cause some problems, and the compressor need liquid helium, which is a bitch to work with and make the plane more expensive to fly. Although the kerosene version may have even more thust than the normal, hydrogen sabre.

On one hand the Skylon/Hotol project has never been quite expensive so it should be within the Russian budget, on the other it benefits from over 35 years of work by Brits engineers, so I doubtthey can build something similar in less than a decade.
>>
>>35138868
Why? If you were a F-22 or F-35 pilot, your flying days would be over before this thing makes its first flight.

Further more, this 6th generation sounds about on par with rumored USAF projects like Aurora and TR3B. Stories about these started surfacing over 20 years ago.

To be honest, this all sounds like Russian science fiction being a generation behind American science fiction.

>OP: flys in space

I agree there might be something hypersonic in the future but common, there will always be a place in the "market" for purely atmospheric fighters. A spaceplane would be good in some kinds of fights but a relatively small fighter wouldnt have the energy required to make it to orbit and the mig-41 does not look like it has enough fuel for orbital insertion.

What the fuck is that and why is it not dead yet?

HOTOL/Skylon relies on a very well made heat exchange system using advanced materials in the engines.

I find it interesting to see that the anti-russian shills work full time to maintain a presence on 4chan so that when they need to they can transition off of the /k/, etc, training grounds to move into the /pol/ hotspots.

The US has nothing but benefit to gain from a strong alliance with Russia. It is the old money families and Communist Germany and France that have everything to loose.

I hole-hardedly agree, but allow me to play doubles advocate here for a moment. For all intensive purposes I think you are wrong. In an age where false morals are a diamond dozen, true virtues are a blessing in the skies. We often put our false morality on a petal stool like a bunch of pre-Madonnas, but you all seem to be taking something very valuable for granite. So I ask of you to mustard up all the strength you can because it is a doggy dog world out there. Although there is some merit to what you are saying it seems like you have a huge ship on your shoulder. In your argument you seem to throw everything in but the kids Nsync, and even though you are having a feel day with this I am here to bring you back into reality. I have a sick sense when it comes to these types of things. It is almost spooky, because I cannot turn a blonde eye to these glaring flaws in your rhetoric. I have zero taller ants when it comes to people spouting out hate in the name of moral righteousness. You just need to remember what comes around is all around, and when supply and command fails you will be the first to go. Make my words, when you get down to brass stacks it doesn't take rocket appliances to get two birds stoned at once. It's clear who makes the pants in this relationship, and sometimes you just have to swallow your prize and accept the facts. You might have to come to this conclusion through denial and error but I swear on my mother's mating name that when you put the petal to the medal you will pass with flying carpets like it’s a peach of cake.
