Probably. Just make sure it is decent thickness at the breach end. 1/2 inch width steel sounds safe if you want to be triple sure

Short answer: yes, it won't explode.

I made one in high school and tied it to a 2x4 for a stock and it worked good enough for an afternoon of fun.
There are pretty easy ways to make a slam-shotgun that work much better. Notably in the firing pin area.

There you go. It's not quite finished but it's a muzzle loader I made out of a chunk of 12 gauge barrel I cut off of an old break action. Kinda lost interest and haven't touched it in a while but It shot well when I tested it with some fuse and I think 75gr of black powder.

25 round box of birdshot and a 5 rounds of 00. Stocks ok for hip shooting but shit shouldered. Decided to make a new stock before trying to use it more. Its a incredibly low priority. Good chance ill never shoot it again.

What size of pipe is the correct size?
I thought the standard was shitty 3/4 inch black / galvanized pipe. I hope I didn't get the wrong stuff..

I was wrong, the pipe fits pretty good. The firing pin is way too big I think. It looks like when it goes off there is still a pretty good gap that allows the shell to drop into the larger pipe and expand.

This anon is right. Lesson learned, I will remake it with a bail for the firing pin, the threads on the bolt snag the shell resulting in fishing it out as well.

you need the breach to be flat.
if you glued a thick washer over that nut it would probably be ok. the way it is now is really bad.
