Please don't fall for the .22lr is ineffective meme. .22lr is perfect for hunting small game (anything that isn't you wouldn't hunt with .22 at all) and for self defense, that shit can kill a human / seriously injure one.

The only reason to get a .22 magnum is if your locality has strange regulations surrounding hunting. Mine requires you to use rimfire when hunting at night (generally only legal for furbearers and varmints like coyote or racoon), and the magnum or .17 HMR just give you more range to work with, but for general purpose day hunts you're be fine with a .22 for rabbit, squirrel, etc.

Muzzle energy ≠ energy at impact. 22 magnum loses its energy to air resistance very fast. 38 special is typically used at close range. The comparison just doesn't hold water.

22 LR is extremely effective for hunting small game. More powerful rimfire cartridges like .22 mag or .17 HMR can end up destroying too much meat w/out a headshot. .22 mag gives you more power and opens the door to coyotes and pigs with good shot placement. 17HMR has more KE and a very flat trajectory, but is known to blow apart small game and be sensitive to wind.

Now for self-defense, 22 mag is definitely better than 22 LR. But a carbine shooting 9mm, .40 S&W, 45 ACP, 38 SPC, .357 mag would all be better still.

I have a Ruger 10/22 and its great, would recommend. That being said I'm thinking of getting a Henry Pump in .22 mag because I always want more, might have some kind of problem but whatever.

I've heard of a guy surviving 20 22lr shots. It's a shitty killing cartridge thats unreliable for that job
