Nogunz here. It seems to me that a WASR is the best value in an AK for a poorfag. You get so much for your money, and the QC has improved tremendously with the newer productions guns, such as less canted sights, better riveting, etc.

Is the WASR the best value for a budget AK still? Any recommendations for a newbie?

Just replace the furnature with your taste of surplus. I haven't heard anything bad about Centurys trigger, seems very similar to tapcos. A few min with a stone and sandpaper will make it slick. Even with new furnature the whole Wasr fill cost under $600.

The bad thing about the Century triggers, like almost all US made triggers, that that they're too hard. The RAK trigger isn't as bad as the Crapcos since they don't have that corner/hump that Tapco mildlessly copied from the surplus/mil-spec FCG's but it's still a US made trigger that is either too hard or too soft (there's some pics out there that show them deforming). There is no reason not to just use a FCG that was made by the same people as the rifle that will have the right hardness and geometry.

The krink is currently sporting the arsenal us trigger. It is the "old style" as its more then a year old, there is a redesigned one but I have no experience with it. I have tapcos, century, ALG both treatments and stock vepr triggers in various rifles. The only one I hate is the arsenal. I would rather see peening on a carrier as it can be monitored and corrected with a swipe of a file. Broken hammer means rifle goes down without warning.

Really neat, but because it is fit to the hammer and trigger holes I have a feeling it won't work with an AMD-65, as the trigger pin is in a slightly different position than most AK's. Enough of a difference that I had to do light machining on a standard retaining plate to fit my pins
