The licenses to produce 1911 pattern guns expired (but the patent *didn't*) and Colt wanted to increase the cost of both individual pieces and the cost of licensee and basically other gun companies + DoD said go fuck yourself. The 7+1 and other issues were used as justifications why they choose the M9 and what they were looking at *LONG* after the fact they announced they were dropping the Colt deal.

BTW they tried to do the same thing with the M4/M16 licenses but a court case ruled that pattern of firearm to be 'too ubiquitous' to own and basically canceled their unique ownership of it. That's why the Carbine trials and replacement trials were so big a few years back.

She shot a big round and was good for killing shit dead. But more capacity from double stack magazines and allied compatability with NATO rounds was more important in the Cold War.
