Presumably most wild animals would never choose death and would fight to the end as long as they can. Also animals are generally a lot more durable. Its difficult knowing when its best to put an animal down. There was this raccoon that would just sit in the hot sun holding its face under its hands in mid day but whenever I came outside it always waddled away. Obviously it was informal, and jokey, but only kind of. If you lost more than two limbs, or if you lost your dick most guys would rather not be saved. We had a lot of guys around who'd lost a limb or gotten lifelong injuries so it was a real up close look at what you were willing to stomach living with in terms of amputation. We dealt with a lot of up close explosives. The first 2 team leaders I had were both killed and the third was injured for life in the leg, so we took some disproportionately high casualties.

In terms of debating mercy killing the enemy, the topic never really came up. You kill them if they still present any kind of threat. Not being edgelord, but that's just the truth of it. If they are injured AND you can see their hands AND they are making surrender gestures AND you have good look at their torso for an s-vest, sure capture them and give them medical care.
