It neither has a great durability record, nor is it super cheap relatively to the other guns in the range.

The pardener is $160 shipped and is objectively better than most 870's being produced right now, and works with most 870 accessories.

The maverick 88 is maybe $20 more than the stevens, and works with mossberg 500 barrels, and you can actually source parts if needed.

The IAC 982 is another 870 clone, but it also has ghost rings if one want them.

The stevens has little aftermarket, worse track records than either the pardener, IAC or maverick and isn't the cheapest.

They are sub $250 99% when a new batch comes on the market, 2 months ago arms unlimited had a batch for $199, some of them were pistol grip adjustable stocks with extensions too. Batches show up every couple months.

Pardeners have been mentioned earlier. They are good for the price and are better than modern post freedom group expresses and take most 870 accessories. but you can't swap barrels. I regret not buying a 20 gauge when sports authority was going out of business and they were like $120 (protector model though)

As a gun for fudd/shooting sports purposes, I would probably go with a used wingmaster for $300 ish or old ithaca 37, or hell a plain mossberg 500. The pardeners are heavier than even regular 870, and have longer mag tubes so it might be a bit tiring to lug around.

If it was just for defensive use I'd go for it, but being able to swap barrels on a gun for more general use is good. cdnn sports has one of the hawk 981's with a 26" barrel for $149.99, so if you really need to spend as least amount as possible that wouldn't be a bad idea either, basically another 870 clone from china that is good too

Can confirm. The magazine a shit, but replacements are cheap. I'm not entirely sure what year mine is without looking, but the only issue I had was it didn't like certain types of hollow points. Polished the feeding ramp, and replaced the mag, and it was g2g

A case, 2 good mags, a serpa style holster better than serpa, and a speedloader for $300

Shoots well, the only problem I had was the paint coming off the striker ready indicator. Trigger is fantastic if you ignore the take up.

Probably the cheapest I would go in order to join the plastic wondernine club.
