Wanting to see if anybody knows where I can find a Kar 98K. My little brother has decided to start collecting and makes that engineer pay check so he can afford a pretty decent example.

What does he need to look for in a quality Mauser Kar 98K?

Also general Mauser thread.
>>
Quality wise? That it's not a Mitchel's, not a Russian capture, still has nice finish, good bore condition, and matching serial numbers if possible.
>>
Question that corresponds to this thread, are 30-06 Mauser conversions any good? There's one for sale nearby for $300 and I was wondering if I should grab it.

Browse this thread compiling a large number of original Kar.98k with all their correct features so he knows what is and what is not correct for any particular example he's looking at.

That covers a wide variety of models; more details are necessary to determine quality/value.

Preduzece 44 on top, tgf 1950 post war production on the bottom. The tgf 50 has a matching 1950 production receiver and barrel, mistmatched wartime production bolt with waffenampts. Quite the shooter both of them. Took the sight hood off the Preduzece 44 to adjust the frtong sights.

Ecuadorian surplus ammo. Good stuff, I shot a group at 100 yards where 3 rounds were fucking touching holes. I can't believe this old battle rifle is such a tack driver.

Unfortunately, I had to replace the original matching stock (pictured) because it was delaminating. I got a RC stock and fitted it with no loss of accuracy.

Mine actually started life as a Gewehr 98 in World War I. Interestingly, it lacks a double-date stamp, so this rifle was actually contraband according to the Treaty of Versailles.

All of the small parts are original, as far as I can tell. It was 100% matching when I got it and the only things that don't match now are the shooter stock and handguard I put on it.

Even if your story was true I'd be concerned about an engineer, which you didn't specify because you didn't make up enough detail, who can't google

I have a Yugo 24/47 in good shape. The only problem I had was that finish was no good, so I'm in the middle of refinishing it. Other than that, I'm making no modifications. Love the way it shoots. Gorgeous guns, I love Mausers.

Can someone tell me what a reasonable price for a Nazi manufactured K98k in shootable condition is? I don't care if it's Russian capture.

You should be able to acquire a RC for $500-700; prices on all 98ks have spiked in the last year or so be prepared to dig in that wallet.

A bit. IDK how he's managed to cultivate this following of people willing to pay 50-100% over market value. I think that the current slump in the black gun market has turned a lot of attention back to stuff like milsurp.

I almost bought my first Mauser the other day but I passed on this one at 250.00 because it was missing the Barrel band.
Are they easy to find?
>>
>>35129796
I think the stock was fucked with, probably why it is that light color and why it was delaminating. Apart from that, I didn't notice any problems. The numbers all match (including bolt small parts), the bolt is the original Gew98 bolt complete with Imperial German stamps. The barrel is not original to the Gew98. It is a 1939-manufacture K98k barrel. The gun itself was issued to the XX Military District during World War II, which meant it spent its time around Danzig.

Anything in particular rub you the wrong way?

Go to Armslist and make a Want to buy ad, that's where I got mine, it's a RC unfortunately but I'm not gonna pay an arm and a leg for matching one, mine even still has waffenamts I paid about $450 for it which was better than I was seeing them go for at gun shows. Just keep looking and be patient. I wanted one for so long and it was worth it.

Legit I'm pretty sure it is not a Russian capture, 'tis all matching. Someone asked about stock markings though and when I showed him there were none he stopped replying, maybe that means it's refinished? Someone help me decide whether or not to lower it by $150 or keep trying to attract retards..

>passed on a Venezuelan FN M1930 for $250
You dun goofed. A barrel band from just about any FN Mauser would've fit.

>>35130110
>was issued to the XX Military District
It was probably built at the 20th's depot using a salvaged Gew.98 receiver. 20th district was in Poland, headquartered at Danzig, and there were Gew.98 floating all over the eastern European countries that Germany overran (like Poland, Czechoslovakia, Lithuania, etc.) Entirely possible that this receiver was in one of their armies' inventories until the German re-acquired it in 1938-1941, which could explain why it did not receiver the "1920" property mark.

Or maybe it was just turned into the Weimar authorities after they stopped giving a shit about the Treaty.
>>
>>35130420
So would the XX stamp indicate that it was converted near Danzig, not issued to troops stationed there? If it was a salvaged receiver, then they must have had basically the whole rifle, since the floorplate is also Imperial German.

I hadn't really thought about it being a recapture from eastern Europe. Wouldn't those countries have put their own stamps on it, like the Czechs did with their Mausers post-World War II?

I just received this from my uncle the other day, don't know much about it (modergunzonly). His father snuck it back over with him when returning from the war. Hasn't been shot too much since.
Then end of the barrel was reblued some time in the 70's, but over all it's a pretty clean gun.

byf 44 means it was made by Mauser in Oberndorf in 1944. It looks like the bolt matches except for the safety, which isn't really important. The stock may have been refinished as well, but it looks to be in good condition (no duffle-cut, unless it's hidden by the barrel band). That's really neat anon, good to have some family history attached to it. Assuming the bore is in decent shape, it should be a good shooter, too.
>>
>>35131682
Thanks for the info!
I got 39 rounds with, and plan on taking it out to the range next week. Here's to hoping it doesn't blow up in my hands!
>>
>>35131763
You shouldn't have any problems with it, as long as the bore isn't obstructed. If you have a case rupture or something similar (very unlikely, except with the shittiest of military surplus), the bolt is designed with vent holes to redirect gas away from your face into the magazine.

Czech Mausers are generally held to be good quality (and cheaper than German Mausers). Simpson Ltd has a few (they spill over to the next page): http://www.simpsonltd.com/index.php?cPath=350_351_353&sort=2a&page=2

>>35131835
Left is fire, right is safe, and middle is to remove the bolt without risking it decocking once removed, which can be a pain in the ass and will prevent the bolt going back in. If it happens, the best solution is to slide the bolt onto the rails backwards and recock it that way. The middle position can also be used as a safety if you need to work the bolt (eg, to empty the magazine).

On the subject of the safety, I got mixed up and forgot which side of the safety is serialized, so I retract my comment about your safety being mismatched. It should show the last 2 digits of the serial number (in your case, 16) on the top of the safety when it is set to the left position.

I believe the rear sight is marked in meters.

>not issued to troops stationed there?
May well have been issued there; there's no way to tell really since by then the Germans had by-and-large ceased using unit markings on weapons.
>Wouldn't those countries have put their own stamps on it, like the Czechs did with their Mausers post-World War II?
Poles would mark their Gew.98s if they went through a refurbishment at Radom, and the Czechs put military district markings on a lot of their rifles. I have a Steyr M95 that served in Košice, Czechoslovakia post-WW1, and recently lost a bid for a 1917 Spandau Gew.98 with both Freikorps and Czech markings, but we just don't know enough about the fate of these legacy rifles in the new countries to say for certain.

The post-WW2 CZ-Brno rifles were new-production that began using existing stocks of parts on hand; there's no evidence I've seen that they took older rifles, scrubbed them, and re-marked them with Brno markings.

>>35131818
>Whats the best non German 8mm Mauser you can get?
Belgian or Czechoslovakian. FN build quality is second to none even compared to the German manufacturers, and CZ-Brno rifles are quite good but commonly-available and not expensive.
>where can I get one?
Empire Arms, Simpson Ltd, Liberty Tree Collectors, Allan's Armory: http://www.allans-armory.com/aaresult.php?PageId=50
