Correct, because the energy of the projectile is distributed through the firearm, and directed into your body. Kinda similar to how the projectiles energy is distributed throughout the plate and absorbed by the body. Actually, the reason why there's so many different claims on the pain factor is usually due to the difference between soft and hard armor.

It's ultimately all down to deformation. Soft armor catches bullets, but it punches back real hard. Even pistol rounds can leave some hella big bruises that'll knock the air out of folks.

But hard armor usually doesn't deform much, so the impact of the shot is spread over the face of the entire plate. This is why many people who take center hits don't realize until someone tells them they got hit. There are plenty of videos of people on YouTube taking 308 at point blank and being totally fine. There are also videos of people trying to take hits in softer armor and collapsing like babbys.

The action moving backwards delays some of the forces. You feel the recoil from the bullet accelerating over time, then as the bolt etc moves backwards, it counters the forces, which you then feel as the bolt goes back into battery.
