to be honest, humanities first interaction with alien life will be like the movie "alien".

Alien contact can bring new diseases. Any contact will mean that you are most likely to die on what ever rock you landed because coming back could jeapordize humanity.

Only way to prove it would safe would be to take all kinds of tools and equipment. you cant bring it back because you risk killing it, humanity, and all of life on earth and your contact is threat to their planet as well. Pretty much all first contact is a gamble that could wipe out either species.

that depends, what type of ayys are we dealing with?

if they're on our tech level or slightly above
>on planet with insignificant atmosphere and low gravity (mars/the moon for example)
>lever action rifle with water cooled barrel + insulated tube mag, ammo needs to be as fast as possible, weight is not an issue
>lots and lots of armor plates (to the point that you can just barely move, weight is not an issue but mass is)
>main tactic is simply to punch holes in the enemy's habitat if it was brought down from orbit, and if the habitat is more robust to damage cooling loops/kill personnel/puncture fuel tanks/destroy eengines

>on planet with significant atmosphere and earth gravity (so earth)
>normal earth tactics, just imagine assaulting one of those antarctic bases but just in maybe 100C ammonia

>in orbit
>no man portable weapons

if they're vastly above our tech level
>on planet with insignificant atmosphere and low gravity
>recoilless rifles out the ass
>did i say recoilless rifles?
>oh yeah and recoilless rifles
>make sure to bring mortars too, use them at extremely long ranges or for direct fire

>on planet with significant atmosphere and earth gravity
>saturate with artillery

>in orbit
>space kamikaze

It probably would work just fine in space. The main issue is supposedly the rifling will get gummed up by all the hot metal particles that normally oxidize and blow out of the gun when there's air. I don't know if this happens, I haven't tried it.

M70 with a lot of ammo, grenade sights, grenade launch tube, rifle grenades, what ever else you need to have an assault rifle that can launch grenades as well.
I have a hunch that the ayys we first meet will be just a tiny bit more advanced than us, kinda like ww1 country with a solid army against a ww2 country with a solid army, us on defence ofcourse.
I dont think we can settle many differences fast enough to stand cohesive

no, the main issue is that any two parts made of the same material will instantly weld together the moment you fire

Then explain how anon would get space aids from an alien life form that in no way evolved to give a species it never encountered a disease.

The Native Americans and the Colonists
>>
>>35129749

You're right in the way that it would be very, very, astronomically improbable to catch an alien's cold. In all likelyhood we would be immune to alien diseases insofar as the disease working on us the same way it works on an alien.

The real issue would be more wild. Alien organic compounds might have no ability to interact with us at all... or perhaps utterly foreign biological matter could cause us to have wild allergic reactions or make us go in to shock. The body doesn't tend to do very well when exposed to shit it has never, ever encountered before. Maybe their organic compounds could be utterly toxic to us while being totally benign to them. If alien bacteria (or their equivalent to bacteria at least) has any way of interacting with our cells and bacteria then we would surely be in for a world of shit. an energy source is an energy source. If alien bacteria has any way of using our bodies as food then physical contact is a really, really bad idea. The same would go for any alien species. They would risk as much as we would with contact.

>>35129932

Same planet, same species separated by only a few thousand years of geographic isolation. Not really a good comparison.
>>
>>35129932
Native Americans and the colonists were both humans. We're talking about something that isn't even from our own planet.

>>35129969
Ok that makes more sense, assuming what we're talking about is even carbon based or can consume carbon based matter. Toxic allergens also would also be applicable.

Not him but depends on how similar the life forms are and how virulent the disease is.

On the one hand you're right that if you meet a planet of goo people with entirely different physiology, anatomy, and even basic building blocks of life who are relatively primitive you'll PROBABLY be ok unless you're very unlucky.

OTOH considering nobody knows what form alien life may take it's also possible some aliens may be similar enough to share diseases, which could potentially be very bad.

Perhaps even more worrisome would be very advanced or multispecies civilizations which could potentially have next gen biological weapons or simply diseases that have developed to become very good at infecting different hosts. Either of those would be pretty bad too.

If we are the only form of intelligent life in the universe then I will be completely shocked.
Would be neat though as it would make us as the dominant species.
That and it would give us an excuse to start manufacturing intelligent creatures.

Lasers aren't so great in space. Sure, there's no atmosphere to worry about, but the general distances involved in space warfare are so huge that any laser is going to lose a lot of its focus by the time it reaches its target.
