Surplus Night Vision

surplus NODs like that are just for fun. That big black thing is an IR illuminator since the goggles themselves are passive. It makes them fun to play with, but anyone else with NODs will see the beam and you'll look like a Christmas tree. They're also like 0.5 gen and pretty useless for anything besides observation or sitting in a tank.

any suggestions on a more worthwhile set of goggles?

Anything below Gen 2 can generally be considered a toy.

Some surplus stuff can be decent, but the vast majority is absolute shit which is why it is so cheap. For me, if I can't SEE in the dark, then it is dumb. Yeah, it's expensive as fuck, but nowadays they have good insurance to protect your investment, and an excellent 10 year warranty

in the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king. Any kind of night vision gives you a huge advantage over those who have none; in the later stages of the Pacific Theater of WWII, M2 Carbines with IR scopes annihilated Japanese troops despite being the sights being incredibly primitive. So yes, even Gen.0 optics can have enormous tactical value.

having said this, PVS-7s, PVS-14 and other more advanced night optics are cheaper than ever before right now, if you can comfortably afford one I strongly recommend picking one up as they have far longer MTTFs and are more forgiving to abuse than surplus scopes.

whats the cheapest I can go without having passive
NVGs? I don't to break the bank on this.

I think that'll work seeing as I think I'm the only prepper in my area. Looking like a Christmas tree is fine if I'm the only person who will see it. Thanks for the help.

100 bucks for Elf-1.
But you'll practically still need an IR-illuminator; it has a single tiny IR LED on it, which is good enough for normal sized indoor rooms and corridors, but useless in dark and wet innawoods.

What's a good pair of like night vision binoculars/monocular for ~$500-650? Thinking of getting some chickens and partly just want them for seeing coyotes if I hear something, but also just because I think they're cool and always wanted some since like 9 years old.

The old Soviet NVG had to be held up with one hand. My friend back in the day got a few, and we would have fun paintballing in his backyard.

Unless its hands-free, its useless for any military purpose.
