My interest in using a laser is to limit the risk of the tank from exploding, and allow greater control over the fire in general. It wouldn't be quite as effective up-close, but it'd be much safer and inconspicuous if done correctly.

I've made a homemade flamethrower. They're unreliable, at least when done quickly (pump/gasoline/match/whatever its all basically the same)

A laser igniting something from a distance sounds much less dangerous than the igniting element being directly next to the explosive.
