The Stuart was used early in the war when 7.5cm guns were very very uncommon. Primarily, it saw action in North Africa. Stuarts were shipped over to the Pacific Front primarily, the ones in the Western theater being relegated to recon tanks.

None of those things are as common as the variety of weapons that kill infantry (which is basically everything). The Germans produced 20x more MG42s alone than they produced Pak 40s- to say nothing of the large number of other ways to make infantry more dead- mortars, artillery, mines etc.

Even being in an M5 would have been far safer than being a soldier on foot beside it considering all it would have taken is one dude with a Mauser hiding in a bush to bring your life to a swift end.
>>
>>35109473
They filled two different roles.
>>
>>35109473
Historically the Panzers never advanced without infantry support until 1944 after the complete overhaul of the order of battle. StuG's to the germans were the same as any field gun, pretty much an axillary to infantry support.
>>
>>35109259

That works both ways. And sucks when a M3/M5 pokes a hole in your side with a 37mm.

PzKFW IV was a neat bit of work, and god help me I loved working on them, but the M4 medium was simply far, far better in all ways.

>>
>>35111832

This.

The U.S. left WW2 with what was the finest light tank ever created
And sadly went on to make more.

But yes,a well crewed M5 light was more than a match for a PzKfwIV, simply because it had a stabilized gun with a superb shot, and was far more manuverable and reliable than the PzIV.

I wont go into the additional facts that "If a M3/.M5 saw a german tank, chances Arty or a swarm of fighter/bombers was not fart off",but still, you're trying to swat a fly with a baseball bat. And the M3/M5 light is an absurdly agile fly.

the us made no more light tanks? and desert combat showed the stuart was certainly NOT a match for the pz 4, much like the chaffee was no match for the t-34 in korea. the stabilizer was not magic, only worked in 1 plane, and didn't give the stuart a death laser beam

The jets being slung under the wing, rather than built into it gives it poor handling. It turns worse and has a lower top speed because of this. It has no airbrakes and weighs a lot for a fighter, meaning it is easy to force it to overshoot in a dogfight, and also its landing approaches are very long and vulnerable. The jet engines also do not react as quickly to throttle changes as a prop, meaning if you get in trouble it's harder to get out. Last, the engines only had a maintenance life of ~100 hours.

>>35112007
It was propelled by engines with lifespans measured in minutes. Sudden throttle changes resulted in catastrophic fires.
The airframe was besmeared with filler to meet specs, and the armament was wholly unsuited for anything but shooting at bombers.

Who could and did shoot back.

It is the one plane I wish could have seen later allied fighters, just to show how bad it was.

A Meteor would have taken a 262 out for a cheap dinner, fucked it up the ass a number of times. posted the images and video to youtube, and been back home before the 262 knew what had occurred.

Image related, just because it annoys boxheads.

I mean, it still would be fucking awesome against bomber formations. Very very little time to shoot back, and it would be impossible for piston powers fighters to kill it while it was attacking bombers if they used proper tactics of high altitude and high speed dives then back to high altitude. IIRC, it was mainly killed on landing approaches, which is more to do with it being in late war with very little airfield AAA than it being just bad in general. I'm not saying it is some nazi superweapon that history channel made it out to be, but it could be very fucking good against bombers of the time if used correctly.
>>
>>35112007
>Seemed to be an insanely great bomber killer

Scoring hits was extremely difficult in one due to the short effective range of the 30mm's, the low muzzle velocity of the weapon, and the high speed of the aircraft.

id formations came with FIGHTERS.

And while one P-51 may not have been able to keep up with a 262, THREE could easily do so.

So now you have a fast, semi manuverable fighter with terribly unreliable engines trying to intercept heavily armed bombers escorted by fighters that can fly circles around said 262.

>>35112251
I can see that, but it only takes a few hits of 30mm to kill bombers of that day so it kinda makes sense for a weapon like that. Just quick boom and zoom fighters trying to get 1-2 30mm on a wing and go off to not get hit.
>>
>>35111832
>>35111948
The Chaffee replaced the Stuart in combat roles by 44 because the Stuart was deemed obsolete for full combat roles, they were instead used as support. Even in North Africa the Stuart was usually kept out of heavy fighting, mostly used for recon. When used in combat it was used as support. The Soviets considered the tank very poor, and actually turned down Lend Lease for the M5 in 1943 as they found it really not much better than the base model, and the base model to be quite ineffective with its tiny gun and complete lack of armor even by early war standards.

It's have been shot from the sky in droves.
Radar guided lead compensating gunnery was coming, as well as massive fighter escort.

Each 262 launched would have been tracked, traced and smoked. That is how behind the curve the Germans were.

If you want some magic post '45 stuff, just imagine a '262 against a F-86 or a DH Venom. It'd be a short fight, ending with a 262 in flames.

No, actually noone is. If you're referring to African children that is due to open boarders unlimited trade destroying the local economy, droughts, other environmental disasters and corrupt governments. Also it's due to corporatism. In a perfect capitalist system (which doesn't exist today anywhere) anyone can start his business, anyone can get a job at some company, there is very little waste and mismanagement due to the free market (no central planning) and you don't have to give half your income to the state. All you have to do is work for it.

The only way to get experience is through family pulling you into a job that you don't actually have experience for. This is my personal experience and what I've seen with most of my friends as well.

"During the Battle of St. Vith in the Battle of the Bulge, an M8 of Troop B, 87th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron was able to destroy a German Tiger heavy tank after getting in behind one on the Schonberg Road, though the commander tried to traverse his turret to engage the M8. The M8 fired three 37 mm rounds through the relatively thin rear armor of the Tiger from only 25 yd (23 m), setting it on fire. There was a muffled explosion, followed by flames which billowed out of the turret and engine port."

Likewise. I guess it's possible they got extremely lucky and just barely penetrated.

All the data I can find indicates the 37mm M3 with M51 shot will do roughly 3" of armor penetration. But it seems dubious about whether that's at 30 degrees or vertical, many sources alternate.

If it did 76mm at 30* at 0 yards, it stands to reason it might just barely go through 82mm at 25 yards
