What kind of firearm does a downed pilot carry? Handgun?
>>
They take the gun off the plane. That's why they were gonna kill the a10, the downed a10 pilots couldn't carry a gun that huge.
>>
Either a handgun like an M11 or at most a PDW.
>>
Downed Helo pilots, as well as Tank drivers (another kind of pilot) both generally have whatever service rifle their military fields. Not too sure about Jet pilots, but the larger aircraft like C130 also have rifles handy

Airfag here. USAF pilots don't carry sidearms of any kind anymore as there's no place on the pilot's body to store it along with his G-suit, harness, ejection seat, and all that happy crap.

The new policy is more intense SERE training to teach the pilots to evade enemy troops quickly and silently and escape back to friendly forces without leaving any trace.

calling bullshit. M9 sits in survival vest. It is however not utilized stateside or for flights over friendly territory. Pilots will routinely bitch about it digging into their ribcage. MX troops have found an M9 Stashed inside the cockpit post flight on more than one occasion while deployed. Frequent modifications include: velcro tape and being stuck to the wall.

Eh, don't generalize.
Look at the dash on my pic.

But then again, Kiowa pilots are nuts and are known to shoot their AR15 out the door if they run out of payload.

Kiowa pilots are the hillbillies of rotary wings.

Are they really all gone now? That's a shame (though Kiowas were obviously abused outside of their design envelope). They were never had the same cultural impact as Apaches or Little Birds, but they were damn capable.

What did they get replaced by?
>>
>>35114800
>What did they get replaced by?
Well, first the US Army tried to replace them with the RAH-66, that program was canceled by the Cold War ending. Then, they tried to replace them with the ARH-70, which was canceled for cost overruns. Then they were booted out of service and any job they had was split between Apaches and Little Birds.

Holy shit that's retarded.

Apaches have like an insanely higher maintenance burden than the Kiowa and way less actual flight hours in which they are available for use.

No clue about the Little Birds, but if the Kiowa was already overburdened as fuck for most missions, I can't imagine Little Birds can carry that load... (as much as I love the Little Birds)

For escape & evade it's not a bad thing to have a rifle which sounds like the enemy's.
However, 10 round clips in semi vs what an AR15 could muster? Questionable trade.

Pilots taking the condensed course at Weingarten were issued with pistols at their original units prior to coming to us, which they were expected to be at least proficient with. There was an approved list (M9, HiPower, something else I don't recall). Some NATO air forces didn't issue their pilots with sidearms, or at least not routinely, so they were all instructed to come with nothing other than some proof of proficiency.

M9 and Browning Hi-Power were the most common, so they were issued whichever one they liked for the course. Bizarrely, a Turkish officer showed up with a Glock he had purchased in Vienna. It got confiscated for the duration and he got upset.

down range we all carry our issued M4 14" FA rifles and M9 pistols, typically it is stated in our SOP that we will carry both at all times when flying, no requirement for ammo, most keep a spare mag or two on our person and a few in a go bag in the heli with us.

One thing few people consider is ejection from a fast-jet. When you're doing 10g in a half second a sidearm weighing 1.1kg is going to turn into 11kg very fast. There have been a few instances where this has broken ribs, this isn't widely known since they effects of ejection on the spine are a far greater concern.

Consequently, some nations which use a heavier pistol, such as a browning will issue a separate, lighter sidearm such as a glock 17 or 19 for fast jet pilots.
>>
>>35120523
very cramped, my longest mission was 9.4 hours without getting out, just coming back every 3 hours or so for a fast turn at the fuel/ammo point, pissing in bags and having people bring us food when we paused for gas then right back on the go. misery. pure misery.
there are restrictions, but I dont know them, they are loosely based on the airframe, but its pretty wide, like at least 5-8 to 6-5 Id say as a guess. I know a few guys who have gotten it done since being in but I dont know if you can get into aviation having it already done, youd have to talk to a recruiter who will probably steer you wrong and try to fuck you because they are all shitty lazy assholes

Firebirds. Starring Nick Cage.

They fake drama by having Cage's character have to retrain his eye dominance, which is accomplished by blindfolding him with a periscope attached to his right eye via panties and having his drive a jeep all over post.

C-130s don't have long guns unless the pax or aircraft security is carrying them(for the most part, the C-130 has so many missions it's impossible to keep track). Aircrew generally carry Berettas.
