Alright guys, I had $325.00 come my way, and with luck another $325.00 will be heading my way soon. Should I:

a. Get a CMP Garand if and when the other $325.00 comes in and scrape up the difference by selling plasma.

b. Buy a Mosin + spam can (I'm fairly certain I can work out a deal with a family friend)

c. Keep saving and keep my eyes peeled for a Russian Capture k98.

d. Buy a semi-bubba'd Arisaka my neighbors have (I mentioned it awhile ago, but I wasn't able to get over there over the weekend).

e. D, but for a K31, an M1938 Carcano Cavalry Carbine, or a Vz. 24.

f. Booze, whores, and gamblin'.

Id get the k31. They're cheap for what they are, these will easily skyrocket in a few years. your other options are terrible by compairison.

bubba'd arisakas don't fetch more than $150 assuming its just butchered wood

CMP Garands are running low, they're at the bottom of the pile, iffy quality at this point unless you shell out the 1200+

Mosin and spam can is a minor thing, Mosins are cheap, and spam is drying up, but they're really not stellar.

Russian capture k98s are meh, its what you get when you can't play the German game

The carcano and vz are in the same boat, meh. The carcano will have ammo issues, and the vz is just another generic mauser.
>>
>>35108369

Thankee. I wouldn't pay more than $75.00 for the Arisaka, and to my knowledge it's only been spray painted. The people who own it are idiots and repeat the usual fuddlore about them. They only have it because they got it for free, but I need to find a way to buy it for cheap without arousing much suspicion.

I'll probably grab a K31 in the end, but I'd like to get a semi-affordable M1 to keep my 03A3 company while the option still exists. The last show I went to, I was seeing Rack Grade Garands pushing or a little above a grand.

So, guys. The inside of my Mauser 93 bolt is rusted pretty well. Cleaned it out with Vinegar and scrubbed it out pretty well. But, especially when I got near the bolt head in the bolt body I was pulling rust out the by the papertowel patch load. And every interior surface of the bolt including spotting out the outside of it all. Should I be concerned about intgerity?

I wouldn't worry about it. That end of the bolt body cavity is the most likely to get corroded because of leakage around primer cup and through firing pin hole, but also the bolt body wall is the thickest there, so it's not like you're losing a lot of material.

Yea. The color itself seemed to vary wildly. I wish someone would publish a book on how rifles were made in ye olde days. I imagine the Japs in particular just used whatever Urushi they could and it was naturally orange-red

I've been trying to treat this like the art works, since that was 99% of the books I've been going off of. I think I'm on the wrong track there though. I've seen someone do furniture that specifically tries to highlight the grain. Not something they probably cared about for military, but its so stupid simple how the furniture guys do it I would imagine they would use the same technique minus the giant vats of boiling urushi the mil used.

If I'm being completely serious here I don't laugh at you for being poor until you're 30 (with exceptions). Part of being young is being poor most of the time, just because you haven't been working very long and don't have the professional experience or network to make more money. Get good grades, get my scholarships and grants, try to get a good job making half-decent money. I just purchased a finish M24 form my local gun store and was curious if you dudes could help me figure out how old the receiverer is. This particular M24 is a little weird since it's got a 1940 dated VKT D barrel with the old style sights that can be flipped up. It's got a hex receiver but It appears the markings have been scrubbed aside from a large R. Anyway, pic related is of the tang. More pics incoming.

It says three, eight, type.
The two zeroes in front of the serial number indicates that your rifle was taken out of Imperial service and given to a school to teach children how to shoot. They did that with worn out, but still serviceable rifles. They also stamped 文 underneath the 'mum' when they did that, but yours has been scrubbed off when they ground the 'mum' down.

It's a myth that stocks dry out. Reality is that wood is constantly expanding and contracting with the relative humidity. It's another myth that wood NEEDS a finish to preserve it. The only thing the finish does is keep out excess moisture. There are 700 year old+ pieces of furniture with their original finish intact, a 70 year old piece of wood doesn't need anything.

>>35128278
Moisture doesn't harm wood unless it's soaked in it for long periods of time. Again, the finish is there to try to keep out EXCESS moisture. It's really the environment a piece is left in that ultimately preserves it.

French polishing wasn't even around 700 years ago, it hasn't even been around 200. Those furniture were finished the same as a lot of rifle stocks, with linseed oil. Linseed oil btw, doesn't even penetrate past the surface layer. It doesn't fill any such "voids."

You should read some actual museum conservation papers instead of spout bullshit. Wood does not dry out over time.

Again what preserves a piece is a stable environment. Cut a board in half. Place on inside your living room and place one on outside and come back in 5 years and see which want looks the same as it does when cut.

Lol. "Wood does not dry out"

Opinion discarded

To answer your rhetorical diarrhea both boards would look different simply because changing humidity would cause both of them to swell or contract to match outside conditions. The outside one would change more because it doesn't have the luxury of air conditioning to stabilize humidity at the desert setting

Protip: seasoned wood exists for a reason (to include kiln dried)

So I thought about posting this in the /qtdot/ thread, but I figured the people here would be more likely to know the answer.

So in pic related I've been wondering what the numbers were for here on the side of my mosin, (91/30 1942 izhevsk) I heard about mosins getting sent to civil guard and get re-numbered on the side with the district, but this number matches the last 4 of the actual serial number, and doesn't start with an S.

Id really like to learn a bit more about the history of this rifle and 7.62x54r.net doesn't have anything about a ZY number on the side.

Also be a nice bonus if anyone knew what thoes other random symbols are just In front.

>>35130882
Again, read the museum conservation articles.
Wood does not dry out. As you just said yourself wood swells and contracts with the relative humidity. It can't dry out if it is absorbing moisture, now can it?
>>35130915
It was put on by an importer. It's the translation of the Cyrillic.
>>
>>35131024
Wood wants to reach equilibrium with whatever the humidity is. I'll put this in simple English for you. Wood wet but air dry so wood get dry. Wood dry but air wet, wood get wet.
>>
>>35131135
Which is exactly what I said. Wood doesn't dry out, because wood is constantly pulling water in and pushing water out with the humidity. It doesn't matter if the wood is centuries years old or a 20 year old splitting fence post.

Again, read some articles on conservation...or don't, be like a typical idiot online and assumes he knows everything.

It would have to be in a klin to dry out.
>>35131310
So just because they did it 100 years ago, means we should do it now?

Again, read the preservation articles. The stock oil does NOTHING other than try to keep excess moisture out. It doesn't preserve it. It doesn't have to be reapplied.

Your gun is still not being used 99.9999% of the time. It's in a climate controlled air conditioned house most of it's life. That is even far better than those 700 year old+ pieces of furniture had. Again, read some conservation articles before you spout your mouth off.

Your ignorance is showing again.
They did it more than a hundred years ago and they still do it now for what little wood they have left for ceramonial duty.

Also, no you don't have to use it. The russians used shellac, japan used Urushi and Finland used pine/birch tar to accomplish the same goal of preservation.

Linseed oil (your"stock oil") does more than moisture control, it fills the pores and cells and gaps with itself and dries, leaving its glue like husk behind making the stock denser and more resistant to splitting or dents. The tars will also while making it slightly waterproof thanks to the resins.

No your house is nowhere near as climate controlled as a museum. I live in the desert where its 0% average humidity and not Britain or france or wherever the stock was carved with a much higher humidity
>>

>They did it more than a hundred years ago and they still do it now for what little wood they have left for ceramonial duty.

And none of that is preservation. It doesn't prevent it from 'drying out,' nor does it add moisture to the wood or any other myth that is spread around.

Not an argument. An oil finish does look extra good though.

>A myth
You are implying the Finnish arsenals on their mosins. I was implying the Finnish people. Sweden, Norway, and Finland all used birch and pine tar as a traditional wood finish. Look up Stockholm Tar to educate yourself. ps the finnish arsenal stock oil does have trace amounts of pine tar form their turpentine process.

False. Just blatantly false. protecting from moisture preserves the wood. Protecting from dents and splits preserves the wood.
