I'd use something stylish but functional.
Like say an Audi R8 that looks like it has had a lot of track days.
good looking, but functional.

>>35115523
>>35114592
There's a helmet in the Wallace collection, covered entirely in engravings and fully gilded, which bears the marks of a few days at the race track, or rather a few tournaments. So even a suit showing you nothing but pure gold may have been intended for practical use.
Such armour is unlikely to see a lot of use though since fashion is ever changing, and someone using armour like that isn't going to be caught dead wearing something that's on its way out.
>>35115442
Made by Kunz Lochner in Nürnberg 1550 for Sigismund II of Poland, later given as a gift to Johan III of Sweden, Sigismund's brother in law.
>>35115468
While the various bits of fancy armour we see are usually decorations applied on top of a good, functional, high-end harness this one is an exception, being made of gilt brass. Worn by Johan Gyllenstierna at Karl X Gustav's funeral procession.
>>35115428
>>35115431
In the light of the talk about plain, fancy and ceremonial armour for kings here, it should be kept in mind that the harness there was never finished. The armourer has done his part, but the harness was then to be handed over to other craftsmen for decoration. But as a change in the rules for the upcoming tournament made it (the locking gauntlets specifically) illegal work was stopped, the whole thing tossed into a closet still black form the forge (later polishing has turned it into bare metal), and another harness (pic) was started and rushed to completion for the event.
>>35115532
Yeah, it's a sad thing to see them re-posted over and over and over again.
>>35115534
And this one's most definitely not a time line, having the gladius sit at the same level as late medieval swords, the cuinqeada seemingly being something from the late 11th century, etc.

You're right, I most likely wasn't paying attention when I was naming the file, thanks for pointing that out.

Fucking noice, saved. Too bad it skips over that musket-to-breechloader conversion... what was it called... Snider-Enfield or something? From the 1850s or 1860s. Then the Martini-Henry from the 1870s, Lee Metford from 1888, No.1 Lee Enfield from 1895, and so on. I guess all those loadouts are for England? Badass... though I really would rather not deal with an L85A2 or whatever it's called. Sure it's bullpup and compact, but what ridiculous weight for being a 5.56 assault rifle. I mean, the Sig 550 is probably a bit heavier but it's also a lot bigger due to not being bullpup making it a bit more understandable! Then when you compare them to an M4A1 which is 6.3lb unloaded as I recall, around 7.4lb loaded with a full STANAG mag, I mean... that's probably lighter than either one unloaded, but how much shorter is the barrel? Maybe 6"? 8"? Granted there's plenty I would do for an extra 6-8" but adding 2lb+ to a primary firearm is not one of them. If I'm going to be toting a firearm that's 10lb or close to it while loaded WITHOUT an optic, I want it to be firing full-sized rifle rounds. Maybe that's just me.
So I caught up to the thread, and after having saved every pic posted, I read that you guys said that the Bashford Dean shit is obsolete. What are good books, charts, sketches and everything for learning on this?

"Arms and Armor of the Medieval Knight" by Edge & Paddock may be a decent place to start. Oakeshott (mostly "European Weapons and Armour", to some degree "The Archaeology of Weapons") is getting a bit long in the tooth and wasn't really at home with armour ever I think, but may still be worth a look. He's still a lot better than Dean. Capwell's "Armour of the English Knight 1400-1450" is absolutely brilliant, but as narrow in scope as the title suggests. Sadly I don't know of any similar works covering other places and times.

I found a weird german video here, they're lifting a guy wearing knight armor with a hoist. I thought armor was mobile and light enough to not require that?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j310VVPPIRI
>>35126349
Armour was light enough that you could get into the saddle on your own wearing it. A knight in decent shape could jump into the saddle without using the stirrups.
I may be missing something since I can't understand the narration, but that armour doesn't look like the best of replicas. As such it may both be far too heavy, and poorly articulated. We don't get to see the guy try it without the crane either, so it's also possible that he would have managed just fine without it.
>>35114240
Each suit is perfectly evolved for the environment it was used in. That full harness, oceanian or the o-yoroi would be useless in jungle, for instance.

Being over 6 feet tall wasn't a prerequisite for knighthood; noble ancestry/cash monee was. If a noble's kid wasn't in line to inherit his family's wealth he may as well earn his family's honor in war.

The Inca outnumbered the Spanish by tens of thousands to one and got fucking slaughtered by less powerful local tribespeople allied with the Conquistadores.
>>35135679
This is a myth, the Spanish certainly wore steel armor throughout the vast majority of the conquest of Peru and in almost every pitched battle. However they did frequently prefer maille over plate armor along with a steel morion or chapel de fer style helmet. Bear in mind that the powerful fighting core of Conquistador forces was their cavalry, for whom weight was less of a problem.
