I was under the impression that a lot of mercs were belgian. France and Germany also had big merc communities.

A lot of mercenaries come from the groups of soldiers on the frontlines of decolonisation in Africa during the 60s/70s/80s.

So, Brits, French, Belgians.

Add to that, lots of Anglo and French veterans of international wars in recent decades, relatively few others.

I don't know about numerically, but South African, Rhodesian, and Namibian mercenaries featured pretty heavily in central and west Africa during the 80s/90s/00s, propping up governments when the rebels came to town.
