you have to have a 16 inch total length of your barrel otherwise it's an SBR or a pistol
that means it's a 14.5 in barrel with a 2 inch flash hider welded to it to make a 16.5 inch total length, but only 14.5 in of it is useful barrel.

No. Barrel length is measured from the breech face to the muzzle. A 16.1" .223R/5.56N barrel will have about 14.2" of rifling.

so you will get lower velocity and arguably less stabilization out of a 14.5 pinned and welded barrel without any increase in utility based on shorter length because you still have to have an overall barrel length of 16 inches by law

-Mil issue M4 BDCs (like the ACOG) are generally calibrated for 14.5" barrel ballistics
-Slightly shorter rifle
-Negligibly slower muzzle velocity
-You have to have a muzzle device pinned to bypass NFA
-Looks better in most cases

16:
-Negligibly higher muzzle velocity
-Slightly longer rifle
-Looks goofy when making an M4gery
-You don't have to pin a muzzle device
-Potentially more reliable when using shitty/not-so-hot ammo with mid-length gas

Inb4 some retard claims they are the same length. A 16" is 16" of barrel without a muzzle device. A 14.5" is 16" with a pinned A2X or FSC556, among some other muzzle devices.
