What exactly is the BEST 5.56 round for killing unarmored threats in an urban environment? Hollow point? Some type of soft point? How does this round do when presented with simple barriers like interior walls, vehicle doors and windshields?

Softpoints of medium weight (64-70 grain) seem to be the best "all around" 5.56 round. Good terminal ballistics, good barrier penetration. I prefer speer gold dot 64 grain.
