Rhodesia won the military conflict. They lost the political side of things due to Anglo guilt and the UN. This is why Rhodesia is loved by /k/. It was a brave and proud country that fought against odds way higher than themselves, and won at every turn - while only losing the no-gun political side of things.

They didn't fight blacks because of sheer hate, they fought a Communist invader that was backed by the USSR and the Chinese, on their own. Look at Zimbabwe now and Rhodesia back in the day. It sure pains the heart to see such African beauty and potential get wasted away and pissed on.

Okay for starters, there are some dumb fucking shills here... anyways, basically England told all of their colonists that they needed to return "home" due to the whole post WWII self determination bullshit, and the colonists in Africa (Australia and Canada were not colonies) basically said no because while being Anglo-Saxon, they were not English, rather they were African. It's very similar to the feeling of colonist in America before the revolutionary war. So after some time, and a couple negotiations, the colony of Rhodesia issued their Unilateral Declaration of Independence (UDI) from England. Their two main reasons were identity and agriculture. Rhodesia was the breadbasket of Africa. In literally 90 something years they became the most prosperous agricultural power in Africa. They felt that if they just up and left the nation would crumble and starve (spoiler alert: they did.), and the UN declared them an unrecognized state. Their only two allies were Portugal and, surprising, Israel. Quickly, rebels organized and began attacking Rhodesia. The USSR and China backed rebels did not do well against the Rhodesia forces. In one operation alone, Operation Dingo Rhodesian forces faced 10,000+ fighters and only had 200 men of their own. They killed 3000 rebels and wounded 5000, while only losing 2 men and having 6 wounded. Rhodesia won the war, but lost the political battle as their only two allies pulled away support. Eventually the UN forced the to acquiesce through sanctions.

TL;DR: whites wanted to protect the actual population of this nation and were called racist, then were attacked by commies but still managed to fuck up the commies pretty hard until the (((UN))) basically made them not be "wacist" anymore by giving the land to Mugabe.

It was actually because they had no money whatsoever, and the United States would no longer deal with governments who held colonies. Rhodesia went UDI because they saw the writing on the wall.

It was a really basic farming colony populated by a small amount of English people and a vast amount of Africans.

Because of political realities it had its fate sealed, but the sheer idiocy on the part of its own leader led to things much worse. Ian Smith wasn't a bad person, at all, but he had a fundamentally poor understanding of politics. He also had zero grasp as to the reality of the situation, or what the outcome was going to be. By the time he knew what was going on, he again made a terrible choice. It could have, easily, gone the Kenya route. Or even Botswana. A small, obscure, white minority that controlled everything as it had before and let the Africans play dummy politics. Instead he blew his options and a few years later the whole thing was finished and an actual Communist was now in charge.

Things weren't helped by the general feeling at the time. Colonialism was bad, because the USA said so, and most of American foreign policy from about 1945 to 1975 was making sure that European countries lost control of anything outside Europe and most of the things inside it.

To this day, for whatever reason, American teenage boys confuse the place with South Africa which was an entirely different beast.
