The 1 destroyer left in the Navy is basically a port queen. The other ships are still pretty modern.

The main problem with the RCN right now is procuring a supply ship, and current politics tell me it costs the second most senior officer's career in order to obtain one.

Having a large navy would require a large military budget, which would require an economy powerful enough to do such.

Next you need a large enough population to have a solid recruitment pool, but most importantly your nation needs the political will to even begin to invest more heavily in military, which has been the most emasculating factor of Canadian politics since the reunification of Germany.

>>35102097
>what's the status on the Victoria subs?
Tries to be green.
>do they work yet? is there any plan to replace them?
They've always sorta worked, but the problem with buying foreign equipment is that you gotta rip everything out and replace it with your own gear. Ditto on old and abused foreign equipment. There is no real plan to replace them as far as I know.

The reason for this is because the hornets are cheap as fuck. You would basically be paying for the cost of transportation to Canada. Now while the Aussie legacy hornets are beat to fuck, they have valuable spares (avionics and engines) and structural members that can be be cannibalized into the Canadian fleet. this would probably buy between 3-8 years of extra flying, especially if the Aussie hornets are examined to see if any are structurally more sound.

By the end of that 3-8 years, finland will be probably very close to a solution for their jets if not already on it, allowing the Canadian government to keep sponging off the global legacy hornet supply until its totally fucking beaten into the ground.

Why? Why do that? It allows the F-35 to work out a lot of kinks, allows the Nordic nations to winterize it and the Israelis to develop 2 seat forward fuselage like they want. It allows Boeing to integrate the Growler EW package into it as an option. Meanwhile Canada endures a decade and a half of flying beat ass hornets.

The truth is, Canada needs a bomber if the are going to continue supporting operation "bomb tuskan raiders"
>>
>>35102085
If the Canadians wanted an arrow mk 2 they could just fund a production run of advanced F-15s sporting a modified rear fusilage that allowed for the larger F-35 engine.
>>
>>35101623
Why do you even need a jet? No one is gonna invade Canada. Lel Russki menace lel Northern passage lol. Global warming is fake or so I heard, so thats not gonna happen. The US can't even handle hurricanes so they not gonna invade you either. Just buy 12 Pilatus and call it a day.

im in favour of retaining an all professional force but just slimming the number of people down and then more heavily integrating operationally with the states. this would allow canada to field a very small but quite advanced force that would satisfy nato and norad commitments, domestic operational requirements, and give it the ability to conduct operations globally. JTF2 is a very small scale manifestation of those ideas and it has proven extremely successful for the government.

>One cruiser that does nothing but sit in Halifax and eat through gas
The RCN doesnt operate a cruiser
>Destroyers are so fucking broken and doomed to serve until 2030
The RCN doesnt operate destroyers, you are referring to the halifax class frigate which were commissioned in the early through mid 90s and are currently being refit and modernized to ensure effective operational capability into 2030
>>Victoria subs have the potential to catch fire at any time on any routine due to shitty ancient diesels
Victoria class submarines were commissioned in the mid through late 90s and are in no way ancient by naval standards
>Kingston Class are nearly useless and just sit in port unless the CCG needs them to arrest a bunch of Lobster fishermen
The primary mission of the kingston class is surveillance, patrol, survey, and counter narcotics. So by useless you actually mean working exactly as intended.
AOPS ships are going to take another 5 years because our engineers don't know how to build a ship
The harry dewolf class is under construction right now
>No replacement in sight for Halifax class destroyers
No, the single class surface combatant project was created to develop a replacement and is slated to have the vessels completed 2020-2030s
"B-b-but we need dem Hornets haha, let's not buy Raptors or something less ancient and better suited! We n-need those air force commissions!
As another anon in this thread pointed out its an excellent economic strategy for canada to simply purchase everyones f18s for components. Canada isnt about to enter a conventional war against a major power anytime soon and thus the fa18 is perfectly serviceable for the predicted combat operations of the next decade. Also its illegal under federal law in the US to export the f22

The RCN is right in the middle of a massive expansion, refit, and modernization in order to have seamless integration with allied forces on the likely future battlefields and to increase its own operation capacity.

Canada should just buy old hornets to save money. The chances of actually needing fighters is remote and not worth it for anyone else besides the US, China, or Russia.

There is a small use case scenario that can be argued for very small nations buying something like the Gripen just so they are not bullied so much but Canada has nothing to worry about.

Also the super bugs are super disproportionate and the original hornets look way better and I think theyre bretty sexy.

HARV is sexiest bug.
>>
>>35104379
Or maybe Canada could spend more then 1% of it's gdp on defense and have a real military independent of big brother America. Australia's population is 10 million less yet manage to spend twice as much on defense as Canada dose in order to maintain our much higher needs and commitments.

>>35101623
Makes sense, thanks to the HUG program Canada's and our hornets should be largely identical plus there shouldn't be any ITAR issues.

Currently the RAAF hornet fleet is planned to be in service for another 5 years so by using our time x jets for spare parts Trudeau should be able to push the problem onto the next government.

The alternative is for us to dig a hole and bury them like the f-111
