Rank the quality of the helmets used by the main players of WW2
>>
>>35101090
Most of them could stop ricochets, small low velocity shrapnel, low powder rounds, small pistol rounds.

USA M1 Helmet a best
>provides the best balance between head protection and field of view
>iconic and sexy profile
>it looks both modern and medieval at the same time
>adequately protects the back of the head/upper neck whilst still being able to turn your head

Better helmet
>>
>>35101227
Yeah, but those helmets would dent when shot by pistols, causing brain damage. Today's modern helmets can take up to caliber .50 shots, sometimes even more. I've even seen it happen in person at point blank. Nothing compares to those helmets that they used to use now.
>>
>>35101090
Stahlhelm was best, because it led to the East German design.
>>

this thread is about ww2 era helmets
>>
>>35101449
>Today's modern helmets can take up to caliber .50 shots
So in other words, you have no idea what you're talking about.
>>
I mean, the stahlhelm offers the best protection from shell splinters and such, and was reasonably effective at stopping pistol rounds. It was, however, complicated to make, which lead to the neat bit of kit that is the M56, but in the scale of WWII, the only thing that gets fairly close in effectiveness whilst being simple to make is the Tommy helmet, which has its own problems of not being effective at stopping shrapnel or rounds frontally, and also falls off your head.
>>
>>35101449
Lol you think modern Kevlar helmets can stop .50 Cal rounds????

Fuck no. It's just Kevlar. You're lucky if it stops a pistol round. Full size rifle ammo punches right through front and back of the helmet

Someone wearing one might survive a shot from a .50, if their skull was as thick as yours.
>>

Unture, at lest if we are not talking at very close ranges. Also "It's just Kevlar"... no. The PASGT helmet got phase out in 2003. The ACH is Kevlar but the glue used to hold it together is much better and so is the liner.

It has stop 7.62x33mm rounds rather effectively past 230 meters and will stop a 7.62x54Rmm at about 600 meters most of the time. I have read of a case were it stopped the latter at a mere 140 meters with the person only having a mild concussion. However that is a matter of the angle of impact.

The ECH that is coming into service is made of polyethylene and does not have any Kevlar at all. There already is a number of other Armies that have made a similar move.

German>Soviet
It's scientifically proven.
How?
My grandfather as a kid found 2 helmets lying on the ground after the war. One-soviet with the red star somewhat visible and a german one with some paint left.He wanted to see which one was better, so he took a rock and then dropped it on the helmets from around 5 meters height(dropped, not thrown). The soviet one got immediately squashed like a can after the first drop. The german one held on for quite a few drops and after a while of dropping the rock over and over again it wasnt squashed, but it simply broke in half.

Stop defending the soviet Ssh-40, it was made to withstand ricochets from bombs and other such bounced off fragments while the german stalhelm was made to have good protection of all sorts-bomb fragments, pistol bullets and so on.

It's a repro, so it doesn't take into account steel quality or manufacturing techniques.

Also there's more to headgear than just protection.
Even without taking logistics into account, If you have a 5cm thick helmet made of adamantium that can resist 20mm shells but costs an arm and a leg, is heavy as fuck, with shitty straps and incomfortable to boot, would you take that over a regular ww2 helmet?

This thread is pretty stupid, I miss the days where retards stayed in the containment generals.

I don't think so, it's just additional padding instead of the visor, so you can use it easily in cramped spaces like vehicles and buildings. The previous models weren't great when you had to use a fireport.
