She is a tiny woman, so gotta do 380. She can barely handle a .38. she loved my dads FN 57, but that is way out of the price range and not concealable with a can on it.

Not a glock guy, but the Glock 42 might be the ticket. It is large enough to be controllable/pleasant to shoot, fits most women's hands well and is reasonably priced. You will probably want to upgrade the trigger to a aftermarket + slide release button to one that actually works, and add pinkie extensions to the mags. Sight upgrade is nice too, stock glock sights are meh. So, probably about 550-600.

Its slightly harder to find, though it does cost less last time I checked. If you're getting real defense loads for either, they're going to be about the same anyways.

The suggestions for a Makarov (or variant there of) is a good suggestion but in my experience its really hard to teach someone how to use a decocker, that sadly almost all the Makarov style guns have.

Kahr's CW line in either 9 or 380 are simple to operate (glock manual of arms basically its hard to get someone to screw it up) and fill up small hands just enough for a good grip that smaller people need for the small guns that they're going to adjust to, also safeties are nice like on the CZ 82/83 but thats just another burden in training from what Ive been through teaching people to shoot.

I would recommend a Ruger LCR. You can get low recoil 38 special from Hornady or federal. Easier to use than a semi auto. I've seen a lot of slight people have trouble racking them.

I was watching I think maybe Shooting USA last night and they actually did a special on handguns for women and they found that a lot of women like 1911's. My vote goes for something like that because it's going to have less recoil than a subcompact and she'll be able to shoot it better where it's full size. Just get it in 9mm and you should be good.
