AR is an OK first gun. Simple enough for casual shooters, confusing enough to be fun for enthusiasts.

Make sure he does research, movies do not teach you how to use a gun.

any ar 15 should be pretty customization.
i would get one that has a quad rail for the easiest customization possible.

OP, start your sin off with a 22lr rifle to teach him fundamentals in the cheap. If he comes to enjoy marksmanship, then you can think about getting him an AR. Pistols are difficult. Try to find local ranges that allow rentals to find a gun that fits well in his hand, and he can shoot accurately. An HK45 is a great gun, but he may prefer the fit and feel of something else that he may not have considered.

This is probably bait, but I don't know your reasons.

we went to a range recently and shot an ar-15. he has good grouping and he knew a fair about the gun although he's only shot an ar-9. i gave him a gun magazine with a 2018 buyers guide. the gun range said to give a budget and they'll help select a good ar. i was looking for suggestions. my buddy told me a noveske gen 3 infidel would be a good ar.

to add on, he has shot an ar and a hk45 at a range. i took him shooting after school yesterday after school and we burned through a box of 50 rounds of .38 SW and 200 rounds of .223

I love my GO P2000, I wouldn't steer you away from the Hk45. As far as ARs go, you can get a perfectly serviceable S&W M&P sport 2, Ruger 556 or bushmaster for about $500. The high end rifles are nice and all, but don't start to see an appreciable difference until you start shooting 300+ yards.


Another route is to build a rifle with your son. It can seem daunting, but I've assembled 3 ARs to varying degrees, and it's quite fun.
