Hello /k/, I'm asking for your expertise today.

I recently found a pretty good looking katana, the seller assured me it was from WWII (the kind of model with a sturdy leather sheath and a safety pin)
I won't believe him when he says it's an original and not a chinese copy however the thing is looking pretty good.
Could you guys authentify it for me? Does anyone knows how much I could sell it for?

And the tsuba, note that the blade is dull but feels like it has already been sharpened. And as far as I know, it's not shitty "supermarket katana" steel
>>
>>35085960

I live in the country where they are produced and I can assure you that this ISNT a FAMAS.
>>
>>35085936
Its a fake, habaki will not be engraved on a WW2 sword, the fittings are generally non-standard, too decorated and the sheath is completely wrong.
>>
>>35085998
Welp, no big surprises to be honest.
But for a copy it's still pretty good looking I would say. I wonder how much I could sell it.
>>
>>35086030
$70 to some weeb, a WW2 type 95 is about 10-12x that price
>>
>>35086041
But that isn't supposed to be a type 95, type 95 have a full metal handle, this one has classic lining.
(I also have another katana with a green metal sheath and a brass handle, but it too clean to not be a copy imo, should I post photos of it?)
>>
>>35086052
The classic 'lining' is also why its not original. The Tsuka-ito wrapping and the rayskin looks like its only a few years old at best.
Chinks try very hard, but for the most part it looks like someone has been told in great detail how a japanese sword was made, assembled and done a fairly good job at making a replica. Patina on the blade is also non-existent, they get very grey over time unless someones hit it with a buffer on a regular basis.
>>
>>35086069

Ok, good to know and thanks for the explaination, i'll take photos of my "type 95" and post it now.

I calls you a wap faggot, who needs to kys.
>>
>>35086073
Yeah, you'd have to ask why an "original" officers sword would have a fully wrapped handle, but the tosogu fittings are cast-brass with some of the moulding marks still on them. Back before I donated it to a war museum, my grandfather's capture during WW2 was a fairly distinctive sword in that it had the fittings made out of shibuichi, family sword with lacquered sheath and they really do stand out compared to replicas or the more common guntos.

Chinese and Filipinos have been making these as knock offs for years, so there's plenty of them out there. In terms of quality or 'could I hack shit up with it', most are usually quite poor in terms of blade construction. I dare say it would be uncomfortable to be hit by a knock off to the point of serious injury, but there's none of the differential tempering or some of them are made out of stainless and more than a few probably made out of old car leaf springs.

the blade is dented; fuck
>>
so what do you think about the second one?
>>
>>35086085
Far as I know, that's a really close repo but without being able to see it a few things stand out-
>Font on the serial number is a little too big
>Fullering looks a bit off where it nears the handle, too rough and should be a much smoother transition
Can't tell but the serial should also match the one on the scabbard- which is really, really close to an original but the end where the cap goes up the side of the scabbard should be curved, not straight as it is, a Nagoya arsenal will have the serial to be read blade edge up, Tokyo is with blade edge down in orientation.

With the really early models they had a copper handle and brass fittings, far as I know the remaining of them where then aluminium with brass guard for a few years, then they went to aluminium + iron guard and I think the last ones where wood and iron.

There was 6 companies making them and none of the markings I can see there match what I know, or any of the Tokyo or Nagoya armoury markings either.
It is a really fucking close copy- as best I can tell from photos
>>
>>35086153

Good to know, thank you, eh, if you are right and say I can sell those for 70-ish euros that'll make my profit, got a whole box of those for 25 euros and those two where the ones standing out of the lot.
>>
and they are still good looking items.
>>
>>35086175
The 2nd one is a much better copy and I'm about 95% convinced that it is. You could try an appraiser for it just in case, there's only so much I can really tell by photos and I'm by no means an expert, just someone that knows a bit about them
>>
>>35086190
also yes I verified, the serial number on the scabbard is matching with the one on the blade
>>
>>35086195
That 'brass' handle really kind of puts me off as I'm not aware of one being made out of it, fittings yes, they where on a couple of them up to about 1942.
Also when you see the factory and armoury markings they tend to be much smaller on the originals- usually about 1/8" or 4mm, those look just a bit too big. Plus they're not any that I know of and one of them says 'east' in Kanji, which isn't an armour and hence I'm pretty convinced its a fake.
>>
>>35085936
OP, take the handle off. Often times people forget to polish and clean the metal underneath the handle and as a result it is often times much dirtier and corroded. Anytime you come across a vintage Japanese sworn be sure to clean up and oil not just the blade, but also the metal underneath the handle. May require sanding and polishing depending on the age
>>
>>35086105
>The blade is dented, fuck!
>it has a giant serial number that is obviously a modern production
>most of the hilt is made of brass

You will get maybe 7 bucks from a pawnshop.
If you can trick someone on ebay probably 50 bucks?
>>
>>35086548

Even if I sell and it's a big "if", it won't be to a pawnshop, moreso because pawn shops actually doesn't exist in my country
>>
>>35086685
I consider ebay and amazon forms of pawnshops.
It's probably not worth your trouble selling. Theyre 5 dollar knock offs that got left in a shed and look aged.
>>
>>35086096
Oh look, another cheap fake, what a surprise indeed....
>>
>>35086085

>That fuck as fuck bo-hi

Hahajajahahah
>>
>>35086099

"I... I didn't have a camera before I donated it... That's why I ... Can't post photos of it.

... I'm in my ... 50s.... I'm not an autistic 17 year old weeb"

^^^^ literally exactly what you were going to say
>>
>>35086733
I'll give you $20 if you wanna sell to a /k/ommando. I think it'll look decent mounted in my son's room.
