That's not just a standard B-36.

That's the Convair NB-36H Crusader. It was a prototype to show the feasibility of a nuclear powered bomber. They put a nuclear reactor in Convair B-36 Peacemaker and put a ton of heavy radiation shielding on it to protect the crew; but the jets and props weren't actually powered by the reactor.

That dinky plane in the back is a B-29 Superfortress.

Pic related is a standard B-36 Peacemaker.

>At blackbird speeds and temperatures, oxygen becomes explosive and can spontaneously ignite in the tanks and fuel lines. In order to prevent this, all 6 fuel tanks are purged with pure nitrogen before being filled. The blackbird also carries 260 liters of liquid nitrogen in 3 dewars. This nitrogen expands into its gasous form as it is pumped into the fuel tanks to top them off as fuel is consumed. Without the nitrogen, the empty fuel tanks would cavitate from the increased pressure when returning to lower altitudes to refuel.

>#968 was flown 15,000 miles in 10 hours 30 minutes non-stop on a gruelling marathon mission to test the endurance of the J58 engines and the blackbird airframe, but mostly to see how many times they could refuel before the liquid nitrogen gave out. She required five aerial refuellings during this test.

>The SR-71 remains to this day the only aircraft rated to run in full continuous afterburner.

This plane was designed using fucking slide rules. It still completely boggles my mind every time I read about it.

I think the plan was to use the heat from the radiator in the jet engines, instead of burning fuel, to heat it in the exhaust part of the turbine. Nor entirely sure though.
>>
>>35079931
>>35091593
>>35091629

The idea was that you could drive the engines using electricity from the nuclear generator thus giving the plane unlimited range.

Then they invented ICBMs and the whole project became redundant.
>>
>>35091605
>The engine's high operating speeds and temperatures required a new jet fuel, JP-7. Its reluctance to be ignited required triethylborane (TEB) to be injected into the engine to ignite it and the afterburner. Above −5 °C, TEB spontaneously ignites in contact with air. Each engine carried a nitrogen-pressurized sealed tank with 600 cm3 (20.7 ounces) of TEB, sufficient for at least 16 starts, restarts, or afterburner lights; this number was one of the limiting factors of SR-71 endurance, as after each air refueling the afterburners had to be reignited.
You and me both, brother.
>>
>>35091648

Beats me anon, I assumed they were going to use an electric powered jet turbine. It never got to the stage of development were they built engines for it though, so I don't know what plan they would have gone with.
