I'm looking for some of that late 50s/early 60s cold war aesthetic. Got anything good?
Just post some nukes

Nigga, I was just thinking about "late 1950s/early 60s militech aesthetics" and I see this thread.
I guess a lot of people share my tastes here.

That doesn't look like a G3, is it?

they should have really just waited a tad bit longer, then btfo everyone with jets and cruise missiles
>>35085717
The clutter comes from there being six of everything for each engine. Really there are only maybe ten different things to have to look at in the picture, but some of them are x6 so it looks worse than it actually is.
>>35087207
>six of everything
You forgot the other 4 jet engines

I also just loved all the manufacturer names. Convair, Rockwell, Fairchild, Republic, North American. Imma nut just from those names.

I wonder what being stationed in Berlin must have been like during that time, knowing that you're fairly deep in soviet/east german territory, and will basically be steamrolled by a massive soviet tankforce and then vaporized if things went hot.
Why is the F-101 Voodoo the most aesthetic jet of the time?

will there ever be a more aesthetic plane?
i love this plane

Where the fuck did the SR-71 store all of its fuel?
>>35091492
Lots of fuselage, no engines in the fuselage, I think I can hazard a guess.
>>35091492
She's a big bird anon
>>35091548
But she burns A LOT of fuel.
>>35079931

That's not just a standard B-36.
That's the Convair NB-36H Crusader. It was a prototype to show the feasibility of a nuclear powered bomber. They put a nuclear reactor in Convair B-36 Peacemaker and put a ton of heavy radiation shielding on it to protect the crew; but the jets and props weren't actually powered by the reactor.
That dinky plane in the back is a B-29 Superfortress.
Pic related is a standard B-36 Peacemaker.

>At blackbird speeds and temperatures, oxygen becomes explosive and can spontaneously ignite in the tanks and fuel lines. In order to prevent this, all 6 fuel tanks are purged with pure nitrogen before being filled. The blackbird also carries 260 liters of liquid nitrogen in 3 dewars. This nitrogen expands into its gasous form as it is pumped into the fuel tanks to top them off as fuel is consumed. Without the nitrogen, the empty fuel tanks would cavitate from the increased pressure when returning to lower altitudes to refuel.
>#968 was flown 15,000 miles in 10 hours 30 minutes non-stop on a gruelling marathon mission to test the endurance of the J58 engines and the blackbird airframe, but mostly to see how many times they could refuel before the liquid nitrogen gave out. She required five aerial refuellings during this test.
>The SR-71 remains to this day the only aircraft rated to run in full continuous afterburner.
This plane was designed using fucking slide rules. It still completely boggles my mind every time I read about it.
>>35079969
>>35091593
>nuclear powered bomber
>>35091593
>jets and props weren't actually powered by the reactor.
I think the plan was to use the heat from the radiator in the jet engines, instead of burning fuel, to heat it in the exhaust part of the turbine. Nor entirely sure though.
>>35079931
>>35091593
>>35091629
The idea was that you could drive the engines using electricity from the nuclear generator thus giving the plane unlimited range.
Then they invented ICBMs and the whole project became redundant.
>>35091605
>The engine's high operating speeds and temperatures required a new jet fuel, JP-7. Its reluctance to be ignited required triethylborane (TEB) to be injected into the engine to ignite it and the afterburner. Above −5 °C, TEB spontaneously ignites in contact with air. Each engine carried a nitrogen-pressurized sealed tank with 600 cm3 (20.7 ounces) of TEB, sufficient for at least 16 starts, restarts, or afterburner lights; this number was one of the limiting factors of SR-71 endurance, as after each air refueling the afterburners had to be reignited.
You and me both, brother.
>>35091648
Beats me anon, I assumed they were going to use an electric powered jet turbine. It never got to the stage of development were they built engines for it though, so I don't know what plan they would have gone with.
>>35079713
My Grandfather commanded a tank battalion on the West German/East German border in the early 60s and he told me they got issued about half a dozen Davey Crocketts to help delay the Ruskies if they came across the border.
He said they made him feel more secure.

They did build two test bed reactors that ran engines for an even bigger bomber though

NEPA and ANP
Those two reactors were built by Oak Ridge for the ANP project.

Pretty much, they tested them out at INL then eventually moved them over by EBR-1 once it became a museum.
Unfortunately I didn't think to get any good pics of the jet engines attached to the reactor when I was there.

This would be something you'd put into airforce one. I know currently it is capable of aerial refueling but why not both? I suppose it would make it easy to track but that's assuming there are any satellites left to do so.
