That depends mostly on how much slicing you do vs how much push cutting. If you do almost all slicing and almost no push cutting a Norton India fine at ~320 grit is a great one stone solution. Just make sure to use mineral oil on it.

Only needed to spend $15 on a good quality knife. Not having one handed deployment kinda sucks, but I'll take it over spending $100-200+ on a fucking pocketknife like some people do.
Pic related is my No.7, I tried to get a natural patina on it, but it wound up rusting in my pocket, so I polished it up and did a little soaking in lime juice to give it a base. I also sanded the handle down and gave it a few coats of mineral oil which I reapply every month or 2. I don't like polyurethane, and think the natural oiled finish feels much better in the hand. I didn't feel the need to drastically shape the handle like others do, but if I get another No.7 or 6, I might try flattening the sides a bit to reduce the profile. I also have an inox walnut handle No.8, but found it a little large for my EDC.

I think that's personal preference more than anything. For me, it's:
>3" blade
>3oz or less
>Reliable locking mechanism
>Can be opened and closed one-handed
>A "traditional" blade shape with good belly and tip, no tantos or other gimmicky shapes.
>A blade steel with good toughness, edge retention, and corrosion resistance, but not so hard that it's a nightmare to sharpen. (M390, 20CV, S90V, S35VN, etc. are all good.)
>A relatively thin blade with a slicing-oriented grind, preferably quite narrow behind the edge.
>A clip that carries the knife tip-up, retains the knife well, and doesn't snag or scratch objects.
>As thin overal as is practical, and not too "tall" in the closed position. (Many Spydercos fail on the second point.)
>Easy to disassemble, clean, and maintain.

Pictured are several of my favorite EDC knives. The Lionsteel and the Sebenza tick the most boxes, and the latter is what I usually carry. (Note that my Seb is one of the newer models with harder steel, I suspect I would've been quite disappointed with an older one.)

>>35082324
Tons of companies make flippers, but most of the good ones are pricey compared to Kershaw. Zero Tolerance (which is basically Kershaw's high-end line) is probably the most prolific mainstream maker of them. Smaller brands that make good ones include Lionsteel from Italy (I have a TRE G10 and it's a great little knife) and Kizer, Rike, and Reate in China. (Check reviews of any model from these brands before buying, their lines are a mixed bag.) At the cheaper end of things, CRKT makes some decent flippers, and if you're looking for a larger knife, the LA Police Gear flipper is a crazy good deal.

I find the problem is there are only extremes. No one is willing to admit that both the Opinel and Sebenza are functional knives with flaws and that people can spend or not spend their money on whatever they want.
>>
I have a big tendency to break/lose/lend my knifes and never see them again, so currently I just buy the cheapest decent thing available. My best navy knife was a steak knife with a handle I made out of a waterhose for a better grip.
And I can't manage to find decent wet stones nowadays for some unknown reason.

I won't frown at a nice knife, but if I can have 90% of the quality for 10% of the price...

Ordered from that site. Their customer support has terrible English but we managed, I paid by paypal and they shipped the same day iirc.

They have a lot of models with the same blade and same blade type with the thick upper part, it feels very solid and I'm happy with it so far. I stumbled across it while trying to ID's Geralt's design actually, so good eye.

I don't expect it to be some extremely high quality thing, it was reasonably priced enough that I can live with using it. It had some small scratches but I couldn't be bothered fighting with Natalya in customer support. Fit is good and from pictures of the blades it looks to have a very solid and long tang. Holds the edge okay so far.

Anyone have any experience with Maxamet (4.75% Cr) or other low chromium steels on a pocket knife? What should I be doing to protect it? I know fixed blades can get away with being oiled and left in their sheaths but with a pocket knife the oil will pick up tonnes of crud/lint and moisture from my body. Its a Native 5 and the blade is stonewashed if that makes any difference.

>$200 knife

Is it really worth the money? I spent about $100 on a Benchmade and even that was a lot to me, granted I probably don't NEED a pocket knife in all honesty. I don't cut a lot of things, I just have one for security and just to have it in case I ever need it. Probably isn't worth dropping a lot of money on a knife if you're not going to be using it that often.
>>
>>35094668
I use my knife every day and anything under $100 I generally trash in a couple months. If you need a high end blade steel, spend the extra cash, if you don't, then save your money and only splurge on case queens and dress knives.

Sits well in the pocket, no gimmicks - just a classic back lock. My only complaint would be that the paint on the pocket clip scratches easily, and doesn't look as good as anodized clips.
Also - no washers, but that's not much of a problem. IMO one of the greatest folders out there, and best value for the money.

It got old quick. I don't give a fuck about helping newfags. I don't give a fuck about praising the richfags. And I don't give a fuck about circle jerking with reliable-knife owners. Everyone who has been here for a while knows what's good and the market is so fucking stale there's no point even discussing the new knives. Hell, at this point I don't even bother reading the /ktg/ threads anymore; I just look for my good buddy Sebongo and challenge myself to make a new meme. At least it passes the time and gives me a laugh while the rest of the board is slow. I could always go back to shitting up the entire thread with COLD STEEL ESPADA XL shilling, but nobody wants that. So, I'll just stick to my one or two memes every couple of threads and fuck off. I'm not the guy who posted, but I have one of those also. It's not a karambit, it's a reverse hawkbill style blade, and the serrations are there to increase the cutting surface.

The reason the blade is shaped like that is because of how it catches onto things. Look into the concept more by googling the Spyderco Civilian and Matriarch models.

I find the No 6 to be just a LITTLE too small. No 8 is better. But for lightweight string/letter-opening/stuff like that, a 6 is great. Opinels take a great edge and hold it.

>>
>>35096209
No matter how good Boker's heat treatment on 440C, it is still a fairly poor choice of steel for a kitchen knife.

440C is better suited to applications where you care more about edge retention in slicing soft abrasive materials (e.g. cardboard, rope, carpet) than edge retention in repeated contacts with a cutting board.

For a kitchen knife a pure carbon steel, or a low carbide volume stainless steel (e.g. Cronidur) are much better choices because they will hold up better to repeated cutting board contacts at the low angle thin edges that kitchen knives typically have compared to utility knives.
>>
>>35097434
How much of the work you do with a knife is stuff like slicing rope, carpet, cardboard, etc. versus how much of the work you do with a knife is push cutting work like whittling wood, cutting hard plastics, food prep?

How do you sharpen your knives and what grit do you usually finish your edges at?

Answer these two questions and I'll give you a suggestion that is best suited to you.

Yep. Taking pictures without a tripod or cameraman makes you get into awkward positions quickly. I did not want to accidentally cut into my trigger guard by accident.
>>

As far as sharpening goes I have friend who has one of those fixed angle sharpeners like an Edge Pro and I assume he goes fairly high.

For pure slicing ability with a coarse edge finish, s110v is as good as you are going to get until the Maxamet PM2 gets released. S110v is also stainless. The downside is that s110v isn't great at holding a fine, highly polished edge and is a bitch to sharpen.

For balance between slicing ability and ability to hold a finely polished apex in push cutting, M4 and Cru-Wear are great options, but aren't stainless.

For a stainless option that gives up both some abrasive wear resistance (good for slicing) and apex stability (good for pushcutting) to M4 and Cruwear, but is a pretty good balance, consider s35vn.

I would consider the s30v version strictly inferior to s110v and Maxamet for slicing first use, and inferior to s35vn, M4, and Cruwear for a balance between slicing and push cutting use.

>>35097618
Doesn't cronidur have even less carbon than 440c, though?
>>
>>35099118
Yes, but cronidur is a nitrogen steel. The nitrogen steel acts like carbon would, chemically, but while being rust proof.

Combined with the carbon percentage you get around 0.75%, which is just about the maximum you can have in a stainless steel before you start forming chromium carbides that destroy the apex stability of the steel (which is precisely what makes 440c awful for kitchen knives).

Only stainless steel intended for applications where apex stability is important and abrasive wear resistance isn't important (e.g. kitchen knives, chisels, whittling knives).

Apex stability describes a steel's resistance to microscopic chipping and rolling at the apex. In a kitchen knife that will be hitting a wood or poly cutting board it is apex stability that will determine edge retention, not wear resistance.

If you are talking about a knife for slicing carboard, rope, carpet, etc then wear resistance is useful, but in a kitchen knife it is counter productive because the ways you add wear resistance to steel tend to reduce apex stability.

It's hard to make a blanket statement on Cold Steel because they have a ton of different products.

Mid-tier knives are pretty good, expensive knives are often overpriced for what you're getting, cheap knives are either good only because they're cheap or decent

>swords
Some of the new swords where they actually consulted sword fencers are good, but as a whole, they're pretty sturdy but lacking as actual swords.

>all the other bullshit they make
Can be good or mall ninja

The only real thing people agree on is that Cold Steel's marketing is the equivalent to the guy at the bar wearing a tap out shirt who's never trained but challenges everyone to a fight.

They also have a history of shady business practices and frivolous lawsuits.

>Any reason to not get the combo straight/serration version
IMO, most combo edges are backwards.

The heel of the blade is good for fine tasks like whittling where you need the control, but most manufacturers put the serrations there. The front or middle of the blade is where a lot of slicing is done and is where serrations would be useful, but it's all plain edge there.

My 940-1 is a dumbass simple axis lock with the same boring axis lock hardware that all their knives have with very little variation, same pocket clip all BM knives have with very little variation, etc. complete with the blade flexing between the carbon fiber scales.

This knife is rock solid, very smooth pivot, premium steel, lots of machining on the titanium scales, lots of proprietary parts such as the pocket clip.. for less money than my 940-1.

>Sturdy
>Nice heft/weight to it, feels balanced almost directly in the center
>420HC so it holds an edge well
>adjustable tension on the flipper
>adjustable clip for pocket/EDC use
Cons
>The flipper thumb stud thing, it's not very gentle on the fingers
>no way to release the knife without putting your hand in front of the blade, quick out, slow in. Not a major dealbreaker just inconvenient.

Overall I'm definitely enjoying it, makes quick work of whatever nonsense I need to cut up / break down at work, and also a bit of security for the roving drug dealers in the parking lot at night. Only 2 tonight, must be because of the cold.

nah, you got it right. just some $20 chinese branded POS throwing knife I picked up in a toy store in Hawaii when i was a younger man. wrapped it in 550 and made a hand strap. it's very sharp and perfectly balanced. i use it to vanquish criminals in my dreams. when not in use it sits in a truck glove box as a random sharp object on standby.

Ka-Bar has a shorter, Kobun-sized tanto for around $55.

It wouldn't be a major jump in quality though. More of a lateral move in quality than anything.

I'd recommend an Ecos Knives tanto. Basically just one guy, his wife, and one or two apprentices. I've had good experiences with them and they're pretty affordable considering it's all handmade.

The downside is that they mainly release things in batches, so unless you do a custom order, you're limited to whatever inventory they have at the time.

There are two tantos currently on the website for $77 and $86.

i work for a small company. and i sit at a desk for most of the day.
i sometimes have to do contractorguy-type stuff.

i have a couple multitools in my desk. and i have one in my backpack that i carry to and from work every day

whenever i have to do real man work at my job, i take a pair of pliers, a Klein screw driver with interchangeable bits and a knife.
i use my knife to solve about 95% of my problems. unless i have to squeeze something

knife in question is usually an Emerson Super CQC8 or a Strider SMF.

Hey guys, I'm looking for a replacement for my benchmade Mini-Barrage, which I loved, but was stolen by tricksters. I live in Canada, so they're 220 bucks a pop, and I'm considering getting a cheaper option. I just use it for EDC. I loved the Benchmade, but maybe I should go with a spyderco?

Yeah, the geometry on that blade is even thinner behind the edge than the Spydiechef. With a 10 degree per side edge bevel it slices like one of my custom ultra thin fixed blades.

I've been experimenting with applying lapping films to balsa wood blocks to use for stropping to get around some of the practical challenges stropping with coarse particulate abrasives directly on balsa. I have to say the lapping films on balsa work great. A 5 micron lapping film leaves an apex finish that has more slicing aggression than a DMT EEF finish while still having extremely high push cutting sharpness.

The picture was 3 micron diamond lapping film, which leaves a ~8,000 JIS type finish but without any of the apex rounding issues waterstones can have.

As far as folding karambits go, I like the Fox ones, particularly the Derespina collab. I also like the Spyderco Karahawk. It's not quite as curved as I'd prefer, but it's a good knife.

As for fixed karambits, look into the Derespina Model 10 factory collab. Check Derespina Knives facebook page.

>but I hear there are some issues with the liner locks failing under hard use
Liner locks aren't the strongest lock out there, but they can be fairly sturdy when done right.

When I started getting into knives around ten years ago, I kept hearing reports about how liner locks are more likely to fail than other lock types, which led me to be a bit untrusting to them. However, I've had cheap and expensive liner lock knives and never actually had one fail on me.

Just finished stropping my kabar. I'm very new to sharpening.
Looks like I've done a very uneven job. The base of the blade shaves hairs just dragging it across my arm. A bit further up shaves okay but I have to put some pressure on it. Then up at the curved bit I'm not sure if it's even all shaving sharp. I haven't done a very good job with curves yet.
