I just moved from Alaska. I was born and raised there. What no one thinks about Alaska is that winter is a colossal faggot. It is 9 months out of the year, and the darkness really fucks with your head. By January most people are pretty depressed and you have to fight deep ass snow and negative temps to leave your house.

The months of day are more pronounced than the months of night fortunately. In Anchorage you will get 5-6 hours of midmorning sort of daylight in the dead of winter, but will get effectively constant daylight (minimizing at a early to mid dusk) during the summer. Not entirely sure why this is but my guess is it has to do with atmospheric scattering.

All in all it's not that bad, though the effect gets worse as you head North. Also Aurorae look EXACTLY like they're depicted in movies. That shit can get intense on good nights, even in Anchorage. Unfortunately they aren't bright enough to overcome the city lights, so it's not something you'll be seeing out your window every night unless you live on the water and facing west (in Anchorage, at least) but goddamn are they worth seeing in person. The reality of pic related doesn't sink in until you watch it happen. I usually watch from Earthquake park, but if any other anons know better vistas for it, please advise.

I work at a mine. Hours are long but I work week on/week off and the money is good as are the benefits.

As far as what therr is job wise it depends on what you want to do. Catapillar has a big shop in town and they're always looking for mechanics, as are both mines in the area. The state has a long list of openings almost year round for everything from accountants to admin to tech support/database. Anchorage and Fairbanks have more job postings than Juneau, but 2/3 of the population of Alaska is in and around Anchorage and a good chunk of the rest are in Fairbanks.

APD is pretty keystone IMO. They had a fucking Illegal working as a sworn officer for 18 years before they figured it out. I've had UC officers knock on my door, ask for someone who had NEVER lived at that address and then go away after I told them the same and closed the door in their faces.

I remeber back inthe early 90's when the City wanted to cover the pay increase for APD by raising the property tax on hillside residents ONLY.
