Anyone know anything about them or have any experience with these? I have been looking at them on GB the last week or so and I haven't seen any of them sell. Are they bad?
Most are listed from about $900 up to $1200. I was curious if this rifle would be decent at making 1-2in groups in paper at 100 yards, what a decent price is for one, and is it an alright SHTF gun?

I bought one a couple months ago. quality is great but just too different from the real deal so I bought a 551. funny enough the 551 was cheaper than the clone

I have a 556xi

Mine has never had any issues, but it is overgassed by default. The adjustible gas has three positions, overgassed, severely overgassed, and suppressed. I eventually plan on using this as a suppressor host once my tax stamp is processed.

I have heard the x39 variants were less reliable.

Most of the forward handguards are fucking ugly. I was planning on replacing it with some I have seen that make it look more like a 550/551. The "cheese grater" forward handguards look horrible.

>>35074709
Yea I found that site in my searching. They only have SBR uppers atm that cost quite a lot.

Care if I ask what you paid for your 551?
>>
Unless you want one for novelty and you already have a solid rifle, it's not worth the gamble. And I say this as a guy that has the 556R and ACR on his bucket list. Sig dropped the ball pretty hard on the American 556 despite the fact that it was basically a parts kit. Is you do decide you have to have one make sure it has a folding stock. The telescopic stock is shit, the railed forend needs shimming because it's cheap, the trigger is mediocre and its a tad heavy.

Its should have been a really cool, solid rifle. It wasnt. Sig has gone through 4-5 rifle designs in slightly over a decade

I think it was $1100? Magazines are expensive but I snagged some on gunbroker for reasonable prices after watching like a hawk for a few weeks. The classic Swiss style sights were made by MFI and were $130.

>>
>>35075143
Those are actual Swiss 551 rifles. Mine is a US made clone by SIG USA using a few Swiss parts (mostly furniture and bolt carrier). The original Swiss guns were only really imported decades ago so there is a massive premium for them.

The best part is the 551A1 is essentially what people wanted from the beginning, a good approximation of a Swiss 551 rifle...they only made it as a limited run and went right back to the 556 AR-15 looking abortion and the 556XI train wreck. Pictured is the turd they initially came out with.

>>
>>35075520
What exactly is a "train wreck" about the XI? it's mechanically identical but takes AR magazines.
>>
>>35075642
Canadians can have them but the US cannot. Your average Stgw 90 you would use for sport shooting over there is $10,0000 USD here because so few were imported.
>>
>>35075653
A 550 or 556? The swiss made guns are hot commodities here in the US, the preban 550/551s go for $5k+. Most of the murican made 551 are regarded as hot garbage.

Sadly I think the 556 gets lumped in too which is why SIG went to piston AR style.
>>
>>35075716
As a duplicate of a proven service rifle a 550 or 551 would do well. By slapping a bunch of cheap plastic tacticool shit all over it and making it parts incompatible with the original guns SIG USA is essentially trying to compete with the AR15 market with a "new" rifle that isn't proven and had multiple issues with fitting and QC. They basically made something neither a person interested in military small arms or a person shopping for a tactical/sporting rifle would particularly want.
>>
>>35075745
Oh, so you're fashion whoring. The XI has a full length top rail, which people did actually want. Not that it matters now, since they don't make them anymore.
>>
>>35075760
>since they don't make them anymore
I wonder why? But yeah, I'm just fashion whoring.

>>
>>35075782
>I wonder why?
You could just as easily wonder why they don't make 551/553 models at Exeter. Guess they must all be "train wrecks". Sure has nothing to do with Sig USA being terminally incapable of making good decisions.
>>
>>35075760
No, it's Sig USA misreading the market, they can't actually compete against the AR-15 with it, especially considering they make ARs themselves, so they should have done something else entirely and gone the collector's route.
>>
>>35075824
>they can't actually compete against the AR-15 with it
They 556 was a better suppressor host out of the box than any standard AR would be, without significant modifications. However, now they are essentially collectors items because they stopped making them, and spare parts have dried up.
>>
>>35075795
>Sure has nothing to do with Sig USA being terminally incapable of making good decisions.

That's exactly the point I was making...
>>
>>35074640
hmmm needs an m4 stock
>>
>>35075837
>However, now they are essentially collectors items
Exactly, and they could have made it an actually desirable one had they gone with a better quality 550/551 clone.
>>
>>35075869
The only thing that makes the 551s on the market currently desirable is their scarcity. No one wants to pay for their proprietary magazines.
>>
>>35075520
I don't feel bad for people who bought those ones
they're being fucking jews now trying to dump their mistake on someone else
go on GunBroker you still see those ones trying to be sold at like 2 grand
>>
>>35076037
I can also assume anyone selling one of those things for $2k on gunbroker also has titles like "RARE! L@@K! SIG 556 LIKE 550 AR15 AK SWISS!"
>>
>>35075837
Wow, one single advantage over the glock of carbines. Berettas are better suppressor hosts than G19s, but that's not why people buy them
>>
OP here. Can Sig just stop being Sig and release the proper 551 in the US? I didn't realize the 556's were that bad.
>>
>>35075760
it was unfinished bullshit. QC was nin exixtant, gas ttubes had such bad casting marks the piston would get hung up
the x39 models would beat themselves to death if you used steel surplus ak mags and wouldnt function with other random surplus[the last im not sure of]
ExeterShit never followed up with parts they promised, just like the ACR, and screwed over several vendors oninitial release
IIRC they didntship any ifles with a rear sight, and besides, it looks like a wet shit, and nobody buys wet shit. so go fuck yourself "oh its fashion" dumb ass nigga
>>
>>35074640
I snagged one a couple of years ago used in my funstore for about $900 as an impulse buy. Mine was an earlier one that I think has the Swiss lower receiver as the lower has different forging marks compared to the ones I see now (I may be wrong so don't quote me on it).

It Came with a I guess cheapo BSA red dot, Magpul CTR stock, sig mag, and I was able to talk the gun store guy to throw in a windowed ranger base plated Pmag.

The rifle itself isn't bad, the trigger is strange... but I actually like it, I like the ergos. Mine has the fore end in the OP's pic, with the rail covers It's Thick, and heavy... but settles the gun down alot and has lower recoil then a .22. The stock mag feels flimsy, but will also work in an AR180 interestingly enough. gun worked and didn't have any issues with reliability. The take down is cool, and I like the rubber skirt... just interesting all around.

Overall I'm happy with it.
>>
>>35076760
>Can Sig just stop being Sig and release the proper 551 in the US?
No they can't. There's a ban on swiss SIG55X
>>
>>35077115
There is?
>>
>>35077386
Why do you think those used ones go for the same price and over as a new one and that SIG Exeter doesn't produce ones themselves?

>>35077386
No quit listening to that child
>>
>>35078088
Not the guy but at least it explains the state of the market
>>
>>35078088
Don't know about making new ones by Exeter but there IS a ban on original swiss sig-55x. The ones you find at ridiculous prices are pre-ban ones
>>
>>35078414

I own a 556. i'm guessing most people here are not owners. I also own a sig 516, and SW AR15 and i will grab the 556 in any SHTF situation over the AR's. The 556 just shoots better IMO. It's heavier but i don't see that a detriment in my situation. I'm out in the sticks, I ain't hiking when SHTF, i'm hunkering down.
Hate all you want but i know I like my 556 and if you have legitimately used one (not looked at one at a gun store or formed an opinion because some 4chan idiot says so) you'd probably like it.

OP here. Thanks friendo for the input.
How hard was it to find the hand guards for that? Your rifle is exactly what I am looking for; folding stock, that front hand guard, the lower receiver without the two ribs on it. I think the only think I am looking for that yours doesn't have is the diopter sights you see on them sometimes.
>>
>>35079106
I don't know the ins and outs of importing firearms, and exetershits relationship with SAN, but I'd tend to think they haven't been imported due to BATF bureaucracy. Once the ATF started to approve "pistols", importing them became a lot simpler, i.e. no 922(r) or "sporting rifle" requirements.

Also, these rifles are quite expensive and have a small market, which probably isn't that interesting to the large profit orientated import companies. If it weren't for the "pistol" configurations, an overseas firearm manufacture needs quite a lot of stateside support to be viable, to do everything for sporting rifle conversions, 922(r), and distribution
