People in this thread have a misconception that the SKS was replaced by the AK. It was not as the early AKs had a lot of production problems. The AK47 never replaced the SKS, in fact the AK47 was in production BEFORE the SKS was.

The SKS was in frontline Soviet service until the 1960s after the AKM was introduced.

The SKS was in the low initial production phase in 1945.
The earliest variant saw combat in WW2, also the SKS stayed in service until sometime after the adoption of the AK-74, as a second line rifle in the hands of rear line forces
