>>
>>35071733
The only thing anyone had any interest in was it's goofy mortar setup. But it had like 30 barrels and nobody wanted to deal with the logistics of it's ROF and intervals between being ready to fire. Everyone seemed impressed with the amount of hot shit it could put down range in one go, but sustaining that fire without long reloading gaps made people weary of it in practical use. You can saturate an area in one go really good with them teeny grenades, but the range was kinda shit and long reloads in between firing those big volleys and adjusting your aim and firing again were an issue they never solved.

where a 60 or 81mm mortar could lay down nice consistent fire over an area and could be adjusted between each shot for a fraction of the cost and no need to re-train your soldiers or learn new doctrine.

That said a few of these loaded with fragmentation or canister shot style grenades might be a good Super-CWIS as a hail mary failsafe.

>>
>>35071864
I don't get why they didn't realize like day one in development that it's going to be a bitch to reload, I really don't. I'm pretty sure it would've caught on had they put forward a method to make it at least keep up with the total rate of fire as a light mortar with the ability to rapid-fire burst always on hand.

Programmable, air-burst grenades launched from anything big enough to mount the thing (or just something man-portable) would have been a no-brainer for Afghanistan.

>>35074507
>What the fuck can it do that I can't do with a GPMG and a belt? Or a civil war cannon loaded with grapeshot.
You have that question backwards, newfriend.

How fast can a GPMG fire? Those things jam all the fucking time because they're finger-fucked by the mentally retarded and beat to shit. Jams, slow rate of fire, and it's just going to be limited to a certain volume of ordinance on target at any given time simply because it has one barrel. This is also true for a "civil war cannon loaded with grapeshot." This doesn't.

As a concept it really doesn't have very many downsides out on the field if developed properly, but unfortunately Australians were at the helm and they're sun-addled retards. Superimposed shells aren't going to go anywhere because even in a half-assed way they're at least good enough for a disposable system.

What I don't get is why they didn't take the concept and extend it to the M72's overall design. That would have been perfect and got around the glaring issue of how the rounds functioned (and thus why they took so long to reload) by just making reloading irrelevant. Give every squad the ability to clear a couple of rooms in a flash from 500+ meters out, that would be neat. Or if you wanted to get really intense use a guidance computer to program rounds to rapid-fire and self-guide themselves into two or three different targets to either blanket an area or support entry teams with tardmongous air-burst frags.

>How fast can a GPMG fire?
Fast enough.

>Those things jam all the fucking time because they're finger-fucked by the mentally retarded and beat to shit.
If it's some old M60 hunk of shit, maybe, but an M240B performs wonderfully.

>Jams, slow rate of fire, and it's just going to be limited to a certain volume of ordinance on target at any given time simply because it has one barrel.
So step up to an M134, it'll allow for a rapid 4000 to 6000 rpm with conventional ammunition and at a fraction of the size and weight.

>As a concept it really doesn't have very many downsides out on the field if developed properly,
What you have is a battery of electrically primed muskets with superposed charges, it's an impressive piece of tinkering, but there's no future for a weapon like this. There's nowhere you can take this in it's current path that's worthwhile. Even you moved to electrically primed cartridges, it'll still be inferior to current Gatling systems.

Seriously, what does this monstrosity do that a machinegun doesn't? You want a high rate of fire there are platforms that do this flawlessly already.

>>35074842
>area denial
Infinitely more practical with a platform that uses conventional and affordable ammunition and a feed system that doesn't bring everything to a halt whenever it's time to reload (and can theoretically be extended indefinitely).

imagine the tubes faceing outwards dispersed every meter or so

it also should be able to swivel a bit to make maximum use of the ammo

Yeah ok so missiles are defeated now? There will be always a need to shoot projectiles that werent affected by "passive" countermeasures. Something like what im describing is basically a force field around the aircraft and could potentially even defend against opposing BRRTS.

And a lot of people actually think with stealth increasing that visual dogfights could make a comeback so having multidirectional BRRTS means you could shoot down your enemy without having to maneuver as much.

actually neither of those are good application for this crap.
the only thing it can do is basically saturate an area in a ballistic arc with surprise hailstorm of fire.

the reason is the low velocity high recoil short duration of fire that this design suffers from.

so anti-personel applications as bullet hail and as mortar from remote controlled fire-stations. that's it.

problem is there is not much demand for this ability. it solves a problem nobody needed to solve.

yeah i get it.

high-rpm would be nice for civs but the reload time is fucking critical for a weapon system used as ciws and this has abysmal reload time.

first you have to disassemble the weapon and take out the barrels, then you have to pack itt up and send it back to the manufacturer who will check it for damage and clean it and reload it and shit it back to you.

What if they revived the Metal Storm concept for the airburst launchers they keep wanting to add to rifles?

- You need a battery anyways for the computer
- Since you have a computer anyways, it can compensate for the changes in point of impact caused by the differing barrel lengths for different rounds in the sequence
- You could hand load the grenades (sort of like if a shotgun's tube magazine was also it's barrel), and since they're fired electrically you save the space and weight from the gas system

and my first thought was that it might make a neat basis for like a super modern welrod

no moving parts beyond a digital trigger pull, repeat fire without needing to recock the gun

but no, the METAL STORM company wanted a 4 barreled gun with two .45 and two 9mm barrels able to fire simultaneous.

So you've used something that's deliberately lower-case on purpose incorrectly, that alone isn't so bad, but the rest of this trainwreck of a post just shows you should have spent you effort elsewhere.

Like with this:
>race-betraying, apologist, brainwashed sack of shit
>adjective
>noun
>adjective
>noun
Do I really need to explain this? Oh of course I do. Nouns are not adjectives. Sometimes you can make an adjective out of a noun by modifying it, but you can't just use a noun as-is and use it to describe something else.

Well, that's one possibility, the other is you've used a comma as a semicolon.

... Or maybe you were calling him a race-betraying apologist, and then intended to have, "brainwashed sack of shit," as an incomplete sentence. That's okay. See? You don't need to try and tack it on another sentence and turn both of them into one awful abortion.

Bonus round:
>gg moving your retarded goalposts
I can't speak for him, but the goalposts haven't moved. I don't even know why you've said this at all aside from it being a force of habit or a pavlovian response to anyone responding to you. At the beginning of all of this it was how difficult it is to communicate with you that was the problem, his second post was still very much on topic.

As for my own personal thoughts on the matter could we please not contribute to the complete and total fucking destruction of the English language? I don't think I'm asking too much with that.

I don't see the metal storm concept being practical for anything except
A) compact personal defense weapon
B) with guided 40mm+ munitions as a mortar/grenade machinegun

Having bullet velocity vary wildly between shots due to non-constant barrel length is not conducive to good accuracy.

That's a very good point, you could have easily boosted the firepower of a company two-fold with just that plane's retarded armament.

Honestly why the fuck didn't they develop a system that does the same thing, but doesn't take retarded drum mags and doesn't use up valuable small arms? Even a squadron of hand-fitted shop abominations would have been more efficient than that.

The modernized MG3 which is almost identical to the MG42 is way too light to be used as a GPMG. It overheats after 120 rounds and needs a barrel change.

The FN MAG is a vastly superior weapon, to both the MG3 and the Metal Storm.

The only good thing about the MG3 is that you can feel like a Nazi shooting them.

They actually reduce the last rounds powder charge so all the round fire like they were shot out of a 1 inch barrel.

This would make a hell of an effective close air support weapon. Get a little drone quadcopter, load the thing up with a couple of tubes of metal storm grenades and bullets and you have cheap CAS.

Or just make reloadable grenades. Bunch of small tubes and some sensors, toss and choose your method of detonation via computer. Do you want it timed, impact, proximity, or explode on significant movement (like if they try to kick or pick up the grenade)? After the fight, recover the spent grenades and refill their tubes.
>>
>>35095509
But it has a rate of fire of 1,000,000 rounds a minute! Sure it's only loaded with 250 rounds and takes 10min to reload but for a quarter second it fires fast.

> literally storing the energy from rocket exhaust into a solid projectile that you can tap back into at a later date

> probably 1/2 to 1 Kiloton blast equivalent, though it would do more damage to the point target that it hit than a nuke normally would

Dude you ever seen a launch rocket explode, its like a 1/2 Kiloton blast at most. Its going to do less damage when it comes back down to roost. And check out the cost, its expensive as hell compared to an actual nuke. You could Thermobaric the fuck out of someone with FOABs for the same price. The only benefit is being able to strike a point target, and trust me there is going to be quite a delay before they'd be able to get it in position and able to drop it precisely to hit where they want it (could take a couple days to work out the orbit corrections).

Remember what goes up and stays up must be forced to come back down, and you dont want to waste launch weight on even More fuel just to push the thing back down to the planet again.

It definitely has some uses but none of them are mainstream. This is like a Deadly Trap, the equivalent of a claymore, or a simple no-frills defensive weapon for an UGV.

Also I would say the best use of this isnt so much being able to fire rapidly as fire ALL the barrels at once (but only 1 shot from each of them). Create a wall of armor piercing projectiles, and that could seriously come in handy for certain applications.

It also looks like an excellent assassination tool, you just set this thing up somewhere and then you have Thermite packed around it to dissolve it after its done its job. Have it on some robotically controlled mount so that someone with a joystick can literally pop some dude (all those bullets firing at once is like a shotgun, kinda hard to miss as long as you've got the aim/drop figured out, and you can forget about body armor doing a damn thing about stopping this because of the number of hits in different places). Given how expensive this thing could be I expect if anybody bought it at all there would be a high price involved.

> inb4 a minigun is more effective
Maybe but even if you thermite that it could be traceable. However Metal Storm is practically clandestine and off the books at this point, would be hard to trace that crap. Plus it might melt down more effectively because of the more compact size and lack of moving parts (size in terms of length, not volume).

You know the metal storm might be really good for antitank or close air support if you built a plane around it, like they did with the A-10.

It would be equally good for anti- close air support and helicopters.
