What's a decent optic to put on my rifle?

Sako 85 Finnlight in .308, budget $800ish. I was looking at a some of Zeiss' offerings, the "entry" level Nightforce optics, and some of what Leupold and Vortex offer. There's just so much shit and I don't know where to look or what to start with.

If I am building a AR-pistol with the plan on using the KAK blade kit Would I need to change the buffer spring and or the buffer itself "if" at some point I change it from say a 7" bbl to a 11.5" inch one. I know that the internals need to be switched out for 9mm just don't know about the one I mentioned before.
>>
>>35070325
Shouldn't
>>
>>35070317
>preserve
Don't use it. Repeated loadings and unloadings can cause failure at loads far below the yield point.
>>
>>35070317
>whats the best way to preserve the spring in a mag?
By not using the mag when it's not needed. Repeated compression and decompression wear out the spring while just being idle either compressed or decompressed does nothing. The spring will still wear out in several decades if no use however.
>>
>>35070317
Just use the mag and change the spring if you start having malfunctions.
If the mag breaks, buy a new one
>>
>>35070325
Your buffer would only need changed if you also changed gas system lengths, and maybe not even then.

Don't compress and release it repeatedly.

Clear glass, durable, and relatively light weight. Gotta lug this rifle in the Alaskan wilderness so weight is a concern. I don't have any other scopes other than a Nikon Prostaff Rimfire on my CZ 455 so I have absolutely no idea what features I want.

Then there are tons of options in your price range and for significantly less as well. Leupold scopes tend to be very light, particularly the VX2 and VX3 series, but those lack "tactical" features like complex reticles, exposed turrets and illumination. They are excellent quality for money though. You might consider one with the LR Duplex or Boone & Crockett reticles, which are simple, inexpensive but still have some hold-over utility.

Vortex has the Diamondback and Viper HS lines that are roughly equivalent, with Dead Hold BDC reticles.

IMO, considering you're not sure what you want from a scope yet, it's best to buy at the low end so that you can learn from it and form opinions to inform your next more expensive purchase. So for that reason I'm recommending non-garbage-tier, entry level scopes with not a lot of features from companies with GOAT warranties. If you truly want to spend more, Leupold VX5, Swarovski Z3 and (sort of) Zeiss HD5 lines do have better optical quality that might just barely squeak in under $800, but imo not enough quality to justify the increased cost. That's just my opinion. I'm a valuefag.

>>35070513
I think their stuff is well made, functional and reliable, but their warranty isn't great.

>>35070717
You're not going to war, the cheapo imports are fine, but you may see sharp edges, burrs or rough adjustment clicks. Personally, I'd be wary of the crusty stamped Chinese clamps damaging my receiver rail.

>>35070600
What the other dudes said, need two stamps. But there are products like integrally suppressed rifle barrels which have shorter rifled barrels with permanently affixed baffles or tubes, bringing the overall length to 16" when assembled. Those require only one tax stamp, and act as a short barrel rifle with a suppressor. You just can't remove it.

Pic related bottom center, the outer tube is 16" long and remains affixed.

I respect quality, but I love a good value. Pic related.

VX3 has a wiiiiide range of optics, I'm sure you can find something well under $800 in there to suit your needs. I'd recommend something with a maximum magnification of no more than 12x, and if you plan to hunt in low light, like twilight or dawn, a scope with a 50mm objective instead of 40mm will allow more light transmission. IMO illumination and external turrets are not needed on a hunting scope, especially if you have one of those ballistic reticles I mentioned. After you shoot your particular hunting load through a chronograph, you can write up a dope card to tell you exactly what range those ballistic markings in the scope represent and use them for holdover without making adjustments.

I carried one, since it was the only handgun I had when I got my CCW license. It's a decent firearm, especially considering the pricepoint. The aesthetics are nice, too. I'd recommend one if you're wanting a .380. I'm not familiar with the .22 version.

Federally, those 14" shorties, with those grips (and no shoulder stocks), are considered just "Firearms", as long as you don't conceal them on your person or that you don't put a stock on them, and as long as they retain their current OAL.
They have to come that way from the factory, you can't use a regular 'shotgun' receiver and build it to that length, that'll make an NFA item.

That said, some individual states might say otherwise, for instance, I'm almost positive that the California DOJ will say that they count as Short Barreled Shotguns as far as they are concerned, given they said the Taurus Judge was.
Check your state laws, basically.

How well could you max on the range on a shockwave shotgun by putting a choke on it?
>>
>>35073889

I just went to three gun shops in Charlotte N.C. and none of them are selling them due to "BATFE is still making a ruling on them so we are unsure if we are allowed to sell them".
I asked "Do you have them in stock" one store told me yes, another said "I can't answer that question"
WTF is going on?

Where on the BATFE website is there information regarding this, or is there a state BATFE website to handle this? I need a no shit paperwork answer.
>>
>>35073937
Pretty decently actually, the size of your shot and the choke you use has significantly more bearing on your shot pattern than the length of your barrel.

With the right choke and some good 00 or 000 buck, you should be able to get it reasonably tight. Of course, these Non-NFA stubbies can't have stocks, so that benefit isn't nearly as clear or notable as it would be on a shotgun with a stock.

>>35073947
>"BATFE is still making a ruling on them so we are unsure if we are allowed to sell them".
That's extremely confusing to me, people are buying and selling them as non-NFA items all over the US and have been doing it for years now.
>>
>>35072051

What options are there for a fixed barrel (bonus points for single stack) pistol besides hipoint, ppk/makarov?

>>

Bersa, Beretta .22, .25, .32, P64, FEG makes lots of little Walther-type offshoots, Sig, and all the little shitbox Jimenez/Phoenix/Jenson/Raven, etc garbo gats.

Why do you want a fixed barrel?
>>
Tell me about chrome lined barrels, /k/. Everything I've read tells me they're a net benefit upgrade, that is to say, it's better and has no disadvantages over conventional steel barrels.

So why don't all firearms make the switch to chrome lined barrels? It can't be the price, they're not THAT expensive compared to conventional steel only barrels, if anything the amount of sales you'd get more than makes up for it.

Also, since it has better wear and rust resistance, what happens if I shoot, say, a bunch of corrosive ammo, don't clean it after and leave it for a day?

Hey guys, I'm no gun noob or anything, but I've never actually been to a gun range to shoot. I've always just gone in the desert because it's my backyard. But lately the few good spots have gotten too well known and crowded, so I'm going to finally go to my local outdoor range.

I looked at their online site to take a peek at their general rules, but I was hoping to ask here to learn some of the finer points of what is considered okay to bring to the range. I don't want to show up and cause any sort of issues. Normally when I go out to practice, I'll bring a milk crate or two in the back of my truck that has ammo, supplies, medical stuff, etc, and I'll wear my plate carrier to train drills as well.

So, firstly, what is considered the "proper" way to bring all your ammo and gear? If I have a lot of my shit in a milk crate (and my weapon in my case, of course), is that gonna be frowned upon or even disallowed? All my rifle ammo is loose in boxes because it's easier to reach in and reload mags.

Secondly, I assume a plate carrier is a no go, but I honestly don't know. I know I wouldn't care if someone near me had one and was training with it, but I know this isn't considered normie so I don't want to show up with it if that's the case.

Lastly, any things I may not have thought of?

Thanks boys.
>>
>>35074302
They probably won't care how you haul in your ammo. Most guys bring it in a bag or case, though, so you may or may not get some odd looks.

It'll likely be a no on the plate carrier, unfortunately. Normies just can't deal with real elite operators (unless your range has an area for drills and stuff)
>>
>>35074354
Thanks man. I may just empty out a pack and throw it and mags in there so I can lug it in and still be able to carry my rifle.

A bit poorfag looking, but not that weird.

Plate carriers are generally looked at like some kind of faggotry weirdness. The exception is if the place is an outdoor range with tactical bays specifically to move around in.

I'd say go first w/o the plate carrier and see how the vibe is.

Dude, there is no way of telliing what you may need to do.

Ranges vary to the extreme. One I go to is small, doesn't have an RO, and you can back your truck up right to the line.

Others are so anal, you can only shoot the ammo you buy from them.

>milk crate for ammo and misc
That's fine, unless they're one of the "you can only shoot our ammo" shitty ranges.

There are some ranges that don't allow reloads. There are some that will frown upon your loose rounds in a box, and may inspect them. There are some that will check them over with a magnet to disallow any steel ammo. And again, there are some that don't care as long as you're not a douche and you don't kill anyone.

>wear my plate carrier
Fudds will have a hissy. Mall ninjas will think your the shiznit. Inbetweeners will think you're just a little touched. And if there are LEOs at the range, they may be a little interested in you.

Again, it depends upon the range.

>proper way
Some require them to be transported in a case up to the line and require chamber flags and muzzles to always be downrange. Some, again, don't really care as long as you don't shoot anyone.

Make sure you stay on the line, and don't go downrange untill "all clear". And either be patient or put up a lot of targets, have a spotting scope, or both. No one wants to be at a range where someone wants to go downrange to check his target every 5 shots.

You made no mention of it, and I don't know how you usually shoot and if you think you're indestructible, but don't forget eye and ear protection. And make sure the ear protection is good. If it is not suffiecient, you'll probably end up next to someone shooting their 338 with muzzle break.

Because I don't like the racking on my tilting semi although it might have something to do with the magazine disconnect I'm kind of expecting to see some wear break into that area when I get some of the replacement parts to use it. Seems like a nice feature on revolvers.
>>35074257
Nah they're regular size, grip just feels better one handed and kind of feels more like a revolver grip. Don't completely trust double stacks not to jam or double feed a lot in semi auto type guns. I want something kinda thin/light overall if possible. Revolver cylinder is kind of a bastard to fit in a lot of my clothes.

Would kind of prefer a 9mm but most things that seem about the right size are always 380's when I look around at counters.

Why would you not wear a plate carrier or soft armor? Richochetes happen, a lot of targets are held in place by steel frames that bullets would bounce off of. Just wear some normal clothes or a jacket over it. I know people that got hit by ricochets at ranges I'd at least try to wear something over the torso vitals. Generally they're good shooters. There are always going to be exceptions, and I don't think they make a heavy/varmint barrel in the configuration you desire, just the sporter barrel. As far as quality, well, you're not going to get an Anschutz for $242.

Then what about a 1911 in 9mm? A good one can be very reliable, and compacts can be reliable if done by someone who gives a shit.
>>
>>35074537
Won't fit or feed.

The SL8 has a blocked off magwell that won't take a double-stack magazines, and on top of that, one of the locking lugs is cut off diagonally so that it'll still work as a locking lug, but won't pick up cartridges from one of the positions of the magazine, no matter what, meaning any double-stack magazine will act as a single cartridge magazine, no matter how many rounds you put in.

On top of that, beta magazines are dogshit, so even if you went through the effort of converting the SL8 for double-stack mags, the drum would just fuck up repeatedly.

Not sure a full sized one is the kind of thing I'd want to conceal regularly. Double stack is just rounds stacking atop of each other with open feed lips, think of an AR15 magazine. Double Stack - Single Feed, previously refered to as Staggered Stacks, are magazines that have a single feeding point, but widens down to a double stack for capacity. This was the case with the introduction of the Browning Hi-Power and is still seen in modern handgun magazines today (Glocks, S&W MP/Sigma/59-series).
>>
>>35075509
double stack, single feed (or center feed) is like OP's pic. The feed lips present one centrally located round to be fed next cycle.

double stack (staggered feed) is like ar15 mags. the rounds alternate from left to right when being presented for feeding the next cycle. The feed lips are actually wider than a single round, so when loading the mags, you can just put the round on top of the mag and push down.

On the center-feed mags, the feed lips are narrower than a single round. To load them, you have to push all of the ammo in the mag down and slide the next round in from the front of the mag.

Double stack double feed feeds from the left or right, alternatively. Double stack single feed feeds from the center only. 99% of pistols are single feed, double feed pistols are extremely rare.

While both are .30 caliber rounds, the .308 (7.62x51) has a longer case and more propellant than 7.62x39. It's much more powerful.

If they're from a shitcrafter like Kimber or Sig or something, yeah, maybe, but compact 1911s was solved decades ago, most prominently Detonics were first to put it to market.

Something like a Dan Wesson or Wilson Combat brand build should have no issues in compact form.

I don't know about shoulds. From everything I've read about most 1911's the feed ramp, bullet type, and mag follower were the biggest issue in feed problems for regular sized 1911's. I'd really expect the mags and bullet type to have a bit more of a issue in a compact even if they all had a decent barrel/ramp and it was a non factor.
Weight of a compact 1911 seems kind of high for most modern compacts, was thinking I might look at a moonie gun catalog again they got a lot of different styles.

Call some stores around you and ask how much they charge for a transfer.
Call the cheapest one back and ask how they do a transfer.
Most are going to have you fill out an in-house form that basically says "i bought this gun from here and am having it shipped to your store this is how you contact me", then they call you once it's in and have you pay the fee and fill out the ATF form. It's really simple after you've done it once.

How the fuck do I view Englishmen and women as human beings? I have severe Anglophobia.
I'm not a plastic paddy, I'm a mutt of French, English, North Irish and Scottish. Ancestry has little to do with it my views on Englishmen.

But I just see them as slimy conniving goblins. I honestly don't trust them as far as I can throw them, when I see an English "person" I invision his mind working on the best way to profit off the suffering of others in the given situation.
This mainly comes from my knowledge in military history.
Ireland, the Boers, WWI, WWII, the English were more slimy, cruel, cowardly and selfish than any other Nation in the history of the world in these conflicts alone.
The acts Nazi Germany committed in 4 years were just acts England had committed over the course of the past 100. Genocide, concentration camps, invasion, oppression, betrayal etc. had been what British culture was entirely comprised of the past century.
The English people and Anglos as a whole are as bad as Nazis from that era in my eyes since they pathetically defend shit like Blood Sunday, the Boer Concentration camps, the Potato Famine, Dunkirk, Western Betrayal, and all other atrocities they committed in the name of money and power.
I have yet to meet a single English person who wont autistically defend at least one of these.

Studying the history of warfare and historical wars has made me view the English people as less than human, as vile beings with no morals or emotions, looking to exploit human suffering to their own benefit, without a hint of remorse as they lack souls.

What can I do to lessen the hatred I have acquired from military history?
>>
>>35076252
There's nothing wrong with hating the British. I hate them almost as much as I hate the Germans.
>>
>>35076376
Yeah but it's affecting my in negative ways.
As said, I see the English as different than human beings, I have no trust for them whatsoever.
Like, I was watching LWA, and I really did like the character of Diana,
but she's English, and it made me feel genuinely icky to like her. Like I was doing something morally wrong.
I also waited 'til the last day Dunkirk was in theaters to see it because it was from the British perspective.

Yes. It's pretty common to take a shaft engine with a free power turbine and remove the turbine/shaft, leaving only the gas generator, and sticking it in a nacelle. Well not common, but some of the very few homebuilt jets in existence use that method.
The key is that a military plane wastes a lot of weight on shit that's extraneous to non-military fliers, so when you strip it all off and scale it down to half size you get a fairly small light airframe.

Sup /k/, I recently purchased an H&K Mark 23 and am looking for a suppressor to mount on it. Unfortunately I've read online and have since confirmed with H&K that I could void my lifetime warranty with them by using a suppressor that isn't manufacturer approved. And that list is very limited listing only Knight's Armament and Brugger & Thomet. Since I'd prefer to pinch my pennies I was wondering if I had any other options. Mainly if other companies have a warranty in place that would cover any damages a 'non-H&K approved' could cause.

Never keep mags loaded.
If you have to keep 30 round mags loaded, keep only 25 to 28 rounds in the magazine.
When you unload the mags and clean them, stretch the springs out to about one and a half magazine's length.
To add springiness, you can hold a lighter to your mag springs, along the coils. Be careful, though- hold the spring with a pliers, or you'll burn the hell out of your fingers!

Consider that these people might be defending said actions because they want to maintain some pride in their ancestry. Additionally, understand that these people may not like getting pulled into a bizarre post-mortem war crime trial for events they probably haven't bothered to study in detail.

Consider the US's history surrounding the civil war, and how Yankees really can't come to terms with the fact that the union army did a lot of fucked up shit. They also probably don't know about the Missouri-Kansas Border War and all the Jayhawking: when an abolitionist civilian from Kansas would steal property (things, not slaves) from slave owners and their neighbors in Missouri because they thought theft was justifiable when framed as punishment for questionable moral standing (or even proximity to someone with questionable moral standing). A lot of Jayhawkers were never prosecuted, setting a terrifying legal precedent. If you try to have a discussion with a Yankee about this, and they've never heard of it, they'll probably deny it. In their mind, you've accused their ancestors (and by extension them) of some crime they never knew about, and their immediate response will be to deflect and counter-accuse. They'll probably claim that you support slavery in an attempt to discredit you, and the whole discussion will turn to shit.

You still need to be able to work with these people. You still need to be civil, and you need to have the social intelligence required to understand what is and isn't fit for polite company.

So, I was wondering about 'small' calibers'. The saturday night special/sub 9mm manstopping capability ones in general etc.. Namely .25, /.380 acp and their ilk.

And, no, I don't mean about their general effectiveness at sd/hd/etc... I mean general dimensional viability. I mean; what about necked down style rounds in similar dimensions? I mean they did 5.7, surely they could apply similar principals to 380/25 dimensions right? Or is there some kind of general physics/chemistry or scaling issue standing in the way of that? I mean I carry .45 ACP in a fullsize 9.95/10 days out of the week, but sometimes when It's the weekend, and It's the summer, and I'm not wearing proper pants, I'll just slip my p238 into my basketball/khaki shorts or tracksuit pants packet and go on out. Is there any reason that your 'casual' setup has to be ineffective beyond point blanc-5yard range against anything beyond perfectly soft targets?

Why aren't .327 magnum revolvers more often recommended to weak shooters (women/elderly/disabled)? Load them up with .32 H&R or .32 ACP and they have next to no recoil, while a .38 can often be too much for them to handle.

I think because neither .32H&R Magnum or .327 Federal Magnum is as commonly available or as cheap, nor as widely known.
On top of that, .38 Special is pretty easy to handle in any kind of typical 4" or 6" barreled revolver with a full grip.

>wadcutters
Those exist in .32 caliber, .32 S&W Long specifically, and you could load those projectiles into a .32H&R Magnum or .327 Federal Magnum case if you wanted to, but it's a rimmed .32 caliber case so you could easily load off the shelf .32 S&W Long wadcutters cartridges straight into the chamber of revolvers chambered for H&R or Federal

20 to 18 isn't that dramatic in either .223 or .308

20 to 16 is rather noticeable and in the case of .308, many argue that you might as well go for 7.62x39mm to save on weight, recoil and muzzle blast for similar performance (though that may not be that attractive for an AR10)

Less time for powder to burn, meaning less velocity for your projectile, meaning less force coming back (at least directly), making up for the lower mass of the gun itself which itself could make for more recoil.

With less barrel for the powder to propel the bullet, that's a lot of powder that just shoots out the muzzle as a big fireball, not propelling your bullet further. This doesn't increase recoil, but it's very bright, and it'll be a lot louder, even if your bullet doesn't go as fast.
The shorter your barrel, the more appealing a flash hider will be for practical purposes.

For example, a gun like pic related would not have much recoil, as 5.56mm bullets are generally light, and little of the gas is projecting the bullet, having force coming back, however, the fireball at the muzzle and the noise it would be make would be particularly excessive.
>>
>>35083640
>however, the fireball at the muzzle and the noise it would be make would be particularly excessive.
not exactly
if you go retard short it isnt that loud and flash is minimal since most of the powder fails to ignite at all

what your saying would be true for say a 7 having excessive flash compared to a 16 or 20 but at really short it doesnt apply

>How long will one of these run without lube and cleaning before it becomes unreliable?
Quite a long time actually, the mechanics are unbelievably rudimentary, I mean it's a super simple tilting bolt in that carrier, and the piston is a short-stroke one, very simple and very functional. Even when dirty they run a long time. Most also have a chromed bore, meaning it'll take more filthy conditions and then also be way easier to clean.
Only exception is if you get the gun so dirty that the firing pin channel gets filled with crud, then it could potentially do some slamfiring, but just take the pin out, wipe it off with a rag, then brush out the firing pin channel with a brush. On top of that, there are conversion kits available that let you avoid that entire possibility and render it safe from slamfires.

They're not fancy, but they truly are fucking troopers, like an AK.
Any issue you might get will generally be easy to fix, and the gun is idiotproof. No clips? No problems, just feed loose cartridges manually into the magazine as needed.
On top of the mechanical reliability, you'll always have the folding bayonet available.
I've always been of the opinion that the M16A1 is the pinnacle of the 20th century combat rifles, but damn if the SKS isn't dependable and utilitarian, it'll keep doing what a rifle needs to do even in dire conditions.

TL;DR yes, just some grease and maybe the occasional wipe-off with a rag whenever you remember it and it seems like a good time to do it, it won't fail you. If you want to keep it shiny and pretty, field strop and spray it in some decent CLP some time then wipe it off with a rag.
>>
>>35085555
Could be astigmatism, that's what I got.

But listen, it's not the entire world if you keep one eye closed when aiming, if it works it works, it's not like you're a Green Beret or out on some James Bond tier mission, one eye closed will do absolutely fine if you can pull off the job as such.

Depends on how the ATF feels about it. Handstops and AFGs are both specifically mentioned as things that are not PMITA prison sentences, but I'm pretty sure that was with the implication of being added on to a pistol length rifle. Do something stupid like throw it on your glock and I honestly don't know if you'd even be able to find an ATF agent willing to arrest you because he'll be laughing so hard.

Don't do that, he actually will arrest you when he's done, though.

Given that those would be SBRs, no, that's irrelevant as fuck, you can put whatever grip or stock you want on one of those, if they're registered.

Handstops and AFGs have been explicitly stated to not change the status of a pistol, but that Hera Arms thumbhole grip is no doubt a VFG, believe me.

I don't want to go SCAR because I want a 17 eventually, and I really want to stay away from AR's because, kind of boring. I like FS2000 but no BHO, and the SIG556 would be great but right hand charging. What are some good alternatives?

>To add springiness, you can hold a lighter to your mag springs, along the coils.
ive tried this with springs for other things and it doesnt work. it ruins the spring. it only gets marginally stiffer but loses all actual elasticity and will probably just snap soon after.

Field strip, take out barrel, then scrub and clean thoroughly.

If you want rust instead of dirt, sure!

Adding to this: scrub with a bronze or brass brush. If you want to use a solvent, use a bore cleaning solvent or CLP. It looks to me like that barrel just has some shitty hand engraving, though, and you're not going to scrub that off.

I can't find any conclusive information on what the ATF thinks of robotic sentry turrets.

Technically, they aren't human operated, but they are firearms. Getting more technical, nobody pulls a "trigger", and fire control is semi-automatic anyway (from a software perspective), so they aren't really full-auto either.

What would be the legality of putting up big warning signs, loud sirens, lights, etc... that go off when a trespasser is detected, giving them time to evacuate? If they fail to evacuate, turrets obviously open fire.

The property in question is large enough and far enough away from city limits that any stray bullets will safely hit the ground.

I will have to live with the shitty engraving, but if it shines pretty all is good

Best way to learn is to read/watch online guides and playthroughs by people who are good at the game.
