so i'm looking at this thing right now, i really like it overall, but the price is kind of steep. i heard from some guy at the range the chink crap has better value because it costs fractions of it and if it happens to break you just buy an other one.

thoughts?

anything you can recommend?

Good brands will last longer and have a better beam. That said, the cheaper chink and Taiwanese lights are getting better and brighter.
>>
>>35069999
they come under $10 with free fucking shipping from aliexpress, most lights i looked at come with above $10 shipping cost on amazon fuck this.
>>
>>35070047
If you've already made up your mind to buy cheap shit then why even post here asking for opinions?
>>
>>35070077
i did not make up my mind i'm afraid of cheap chink crap. i grew up with them being literal garbage that didn't last a day. i know times are changing and the cost of shipping and some brand premiums gall me, but still i would like tho know if there is anything safe to buy from the slant eyed devils or if there is a better value product that don't break the bank.

how about the J5 Hyper V? anyone has it? about the price range i would like to commit to (if i can get it with free shipping)

How's Streamlight as a poorfags surefire?
>>
>>35069962
the guy's not wrong; I am yet to spend a hundred dollars on flashlights, but I just either keep getting more from the dollar store, or stealing them from work (who in turn seem to get the exact same model I tend to from the dollar store)

that said a flashlight is a very simple piece of equipment; usually what breaks on them are the bulbs, which are replaceable, or the on/off switches, which are trivial repairs

like, you could probably build a pretty robust LED flashlight in an evening, its not hard at all
>>
>>35070361
It's excellent, one of the most durable brands next to Surefire

$5 chink shit LED that uses 1 AA battery with a bazzilion lumes
vs.
$? Surefire incandescent w/ 2 expensive CR123A batteries @ 90 lumes

nothing beats incandescent for low level light with atmospheric conditions (smoke, fog, snow), but a box of 12 chicom flashes that cost less means no fucks given if one takes a walk off a job site.

just get a maglite then

even an off-brand maglite is still good, just look at the front of it to see if it has a halogen bulb in it. halogens are brite as fucc, though expensive to replace

>i have a dollar flashlight it has like 9 leds and my phone can put out more like than it can
probably because the dollar flashlight, while having more LEDs, probably has shitty LEDs and is running them at like 1.5v off one AA battery whereas your phone likely has a 6 or 8 volt high efficiency battery in it

>and if possible something you can push someones face in with if the need arises.

China has the ability to make high quality goods. They just don't most of the time because garbage sells.

I have a cheap $20 Romisen that I got off of Dealextreme almost 10 years ago and it's still going strong.

With proper oversight, China can turn out pretty good stuff.

I recommend the following brands:

>Olight
>Nitecore
>Fenix
>Foursevens

>>35072915
I read some police article from back when Maglites were the defacto light. I read it a long time ago, so I could be remembering it wrong, but they said that around 70 lumens or so is enough to disorient someone.

These days where every company keeps adding more and more lumens to their light, it's more of a dick measuring contest than anything.

i don't like usb chargeable, you can't bring spare batteries. my bike light is usb chargeable and that's okay i just charge it after every time i use it and it's always an hour and a half tops. but if i wanted to go on a longer trip with more night time riding i would toss that bitch in a drawer and forget about it.

i guess if you pack a power bank it gives you more versatility you can charge your phone or your light or whatever you need to and don't have to carry shittons of spare batteries. so i'm not saying it's an entirely stupid idea i just like it better if i can swap batteries in my lights.
>>
>>35075945

>>35076070
There's still a removable battery, it's just that there's a micro usb on the light where you can charge it

i like the ability to pack spare batteries but for everyday use the usb chargeable is pretty damn nice.

I just got a Fenix TK20R about 5 weeks ago. Love it! Built tough. The beam focus is crisp and efficient. The CREE led has a robust heatsink. USB rechargeable 18650 Li-ion battery provides for a nice long life (in a pinch it can use a pair of CR123 batteries). Battery level meter. Low battery auto-brightness reduction. Belt carry pouch & micro-usb cord included. 1 metre impact resistant. 2 metre water resistance.

Low/med/high/turbo & strobe in lumens:
10/150/350/1000

The strobe on this model consists of a very rapid flash for 3 secs duration then a slightly longer flash (still blinks several times a second) for 3 secs, repeats.

Usually I only use it on medium as it's plenty bright, occasionally on high when I decide to cut thru an urban forest on my way home at night. Only used the Turbo mode once to illuminate a pair of taggers at the far end of a football field. I'll confess, the High mode would have been plenty but I wanted to impress the hell out of them. :-) They ran like hell & 5 or 6 teens drinking nearby (also in the dark) yelled "whoa! holy shit!" & started cheering & hooting. It surprised even me. It will cast a beam 310 metres.
>>
>>35076125
FENIX TK20R is the best flashlight available today. Dont even need to take the battery out to recharge.
>>
>>35076193
Agreed. I've wanted a compact performance LED flashlight for a very long time & I finally found it in this one. I gifted my large Maglites away when I got it. My only concern is the little rubber flap that covers the micro-usb charge port next to the tail switch. It seems to come open easily.
>>
>>35076218
yep apparently it's not a good idea to take them out to sea... salt water chews up the usb port and cases a short circuit that fries the light.

What he said.

I have had the PD35 for the better part of a year now, and I love it. If I have to grab 1 light, that is the one I grab. My ONLY gripe about it, is I wish the low setting was REALLY low ( like 1 lumen ). It has a good throw, battery life is good and it comes with extra button covers and o-rings.

Now, it depends on what you want to DO with your flashlight. That's why I keep pic related on my desk ( ignore the one on the right, it's a piece of shit a company sent me a couple years ago to shut me up about some POS " awesome " light I bought on amazon ). The Acebeam K70 is my go to light if I am checking shit out around the yard. It throws light an UNBELIEVABLE distance. It's CRAZY. If there is something I really want to see just in the yard ( flood light ), I grab the Niwalker MM25MB. The amount of pure flood light it puts out is just unreal (7,000 lumens or something full retard ).

If you want just 1 light you're going to carry, get the PD35. Or check into the Zebralight SC600w. It has a built in ability to tell you the battery level, and it also does the 1 lumen thing. It's also VERY small. The only reason I haven't gotten one, is I am afraid I would lose it, and it's around $100.

New entry to flashlights in general. In need of a good one for security work. I was looking into Streamlight and Surefire, but I'm largely put off by how their power button being tied to their modes. You can't turn it most of the models I'm looking into without cycling their modes.

So far, I think Nightcore is the only brand I know that has a separate button for cycling modes while featuring a USB port.
>>
>>35076807

Thrunite Things has a brand. Us charged, or you can throw in a 28650. Separate power and more switch, has memory setting, max output 1k lumen with strobe. Very reliable flashlights, even ones that are not weapon rated work more than fine on them. Great warranty, less than a 100.

My go to flashlight brand, I've owned plenty of fenix, nitecore, a few surefires, olight.
>>
>>35073333
i think lumen is total amount of light, so a wide angle light with high lumen can be less painful to look into than a tight angle lower lumen light.

basically you can get the brightness like this: lumens / x^2*pi where x is the diameter of the cone where the other guy stands for uniform cone. just 3 times the diameter requires 10 times the lumens.

For a truly tactical EDC light, I don't think much comes close to my Klarus XT11GT. Let me show you it's features (huhuhuha):
>$90
>Single 18650 battery
>Instant 2000 lumens constant or strobe
>2 back buttons to easily toggle modes without accidentally shutting it off
>Side button with battery indicator (can be locked out)
>Low light and SOS modes
>Usb rechargable
>Basic water and drop resistance
>100% reliability from my experience
2000 lumens is twice what most edc light will give you and it is a big difference. You can program the light to do different shit depending on your needs, but I just keep it in tactical mode. One press of the main tailcap button will take you straight to 2000 lumens (half press for momentary). Or, you can hit the rear mode button to take you straight into strobe. Simple, simple, simple. If you're not looking for that it also has an outdoor mode that will take you directly to low with a press of that same button. This light can do it all. UI is my favorite of any light out there. I can't urge you strongly enough to pick one up.

>+ solidly watertight
>- fuck expensive
>J5 Hyper V (400LM) $20
>+ cheap
>- maybe too small
>- low lumens
>Fenix TK16 (1000LM) $80
>+ good balance in features
>+ solidly watertight
>- bit expensive for the features overall
>Klarus XT11GT (2000LM) $90
>+ strongest light, versatile functions as a light
>+ usb chargeable
>- unprotected batteries
>- usb port can be a problem with waterproofing and near sea
>>
>>35070361
This. I'd take streamlight over fenix and nitecore anyday. I'd tried all these brands.
>>
>>35077942
Two things about the Klarus:
1) It can also run on protected 18650's and cr123's but that's going to drop the lumens down to 1300. The high output unprotected battery is safe inside the light because the light itself actually has a temperature monitor so the light doesn't destroy itself or the battery.
2) most usb rechargable lights I've seen are just as waterproof (ipx8) without the dust cover over the USB port, but I haven't tested it myself on this light. Regardless, it comes with a replacement cover should you need it. I've been fishing through the rain several times with this light and had no troubles. Anyways, ipx8 means you've got at least 30 minutes in 2 meters of water before you even risk breaking anything. I'd only worry about the waterproof issue if you want to take it swimming or something. Just my two cents...
>>
>>35076860
Thanks, I'll consider Thrunite versus Nitecore. Both looking good with just aesthetics and price point being the determining factors. Might pick one up for my dad, recently lost a decent flashlight that actually got me into looking for one.
>>
>>35069962

Maglight makes a damn good light for cheap. Their LEDs are very bright. Good battery life. Tough as fuck. People are obsessed with overpriced guchi lights. Mags are still great lights that the "tactical community" have forgotten about.
>>
>>35079632
And before anyone says something stupid about maglights being too big.... they make good lights in every size from keychain carry and up
>>
Big: Nitecore P12

Klarus here. Thrunight is outstanding. I used to edc a tc-12 before. I'd recommend that if you don't really care about an extra 1000 lumens and one touch strobe. It's not as tactically suited, but I'd definitely recommend it if you were looking for something a bit cheaper. The tn-12 is the same thing, just without a USB charge port, which could save you a few more bucks if you don't need USB recharging. If you ever think the flashlight is having issues (flickering), it's usually just an old battery.
>tc-12: $66 (1100 lumens)
>tn-12: $46 (1100 lumens), no battery or charger included

Also, ATACTICAL is the bargain brand Thrunite. I think they come from the same factory. They make an A1S model that mimic s the tn-12. People seem to like em for the price. I've never had one myself though; I can't speak for their reliability...
>A1S: $30 (1150 lumens), comes with a rechargable battery
>>
>>35079494
yeah it's a very strong contender for sure i have this gut felt aversion to the usb ports i really wish it was under some screw off o-ring sealed cover.

also what about the overcharge issues? i read that the XT11GT tends to charge li batteries above 4.2V which is far from ideal.
>>
>>35075764
Why support China? Are you oblivious to the atrocities occurring with the slave labor and pollution there.
>>
>>35079853
everything is produced in china anyhow it's more about curbing the premium on the brand products if people are more inclined to buy somewhat lesser quality for much cheaper price.
>>
>>35069962
/k/ shits on Surefire, but I like them.

When I was in Iraq as an 0311 I bought one. The bulb burned out on me after a month. As soon as I got a chance I wrote them a email I told them I got a defective bulb, and I can't exactly go to Home Depot to buy a new one. They sent me a replacement bulb free of charge, to my FOB.

So they may not be the best product, but the customer service was there. 7 years later, the bulb still shines. Keep in mind those high lumen bulbs aren't the best for flashlights, if you over use them they'll go bad.

I don't have any testing equipment, so I wouldn't be able to deny that. Most guys know what they are doing when they test lights, so I'd believe it. I'm not sure how that will affect the long term performance, but my light runs as good as the day I bought it a couple months ago. The replacement battery they recommend is $17 I think. Hopefully that's still a little ways off for me though haha

That's the light. Good price, durable (There's vids of ppl shooting theirs with a 22, still working) Good warranty as well (Any thing happens in a 2 yr period, things will full on replace the light for free)

If you want some thing slender, get the Archer 2a v3. It's like the same size as a streamlight stylus, has a much more powerful output, more options, cheaper and runs off of two AAs. Not usb powered, still an amazing EDC light.

Thrunite also makes really good headlamps too, that are one solid piece of metal (No plastic bits that'll break or wear out) again they're reliable and won't break the bank. Felix and nitecore are good too, so don't be afraid to look at them as well.

+1 for Klarus.

I have an XT11 (pre rechargable model) and carry an XT2C as an edc light. It's a 1 inch body light thst fits nocely in the pocket unlike a lot of other lights like Surefires with their fat heads.

I'll straight up say it's not as robust as a Surefire or Elzetta, but the features are good enough to make it worth my time.

I'll stick to my Surefires as gun lights and for other uses, but for now the Klarus has all the features I want in an edc light.

General rule, you won't regret paying more for a better product. That said, I don't have a need for a fancy flashlight. The cheapo multi-pack 1-AA lights work great for me. Also fits with my stock of cheap AA batteries. The downside would be their performance during continuous use. With AA, you want something with strobe or low beam on a trail, because too much heat will be generated otherwise.

IMO quality matters much much more for weapon mounted lights. Because of the forces involved, cheap gun lights are known to stop functioning. So $100++ for a gun light is worth it to me, even though you're forced into using more annoying high output batteries.

Now, i'll proceed to recommend a chinese made flashlight that is pretty compact and powerful.

https://olightworld.com/led-flashlights/safety-and-self-defense/olight-m1x-striker

Bonus points for the honesty of Olight, they mention in all their products the lumen output over period of usage and how long the battery lasts on every specified mode.

>low 5 lumen setting

I own a streamlight polytach, and it too has this feature. however, the implementation of it is TERRIBLE. In order to enable it, you have to triple tap the button, which is next to impossible.

Basically, in order to use this function, I have to turn my flashlight on and off about 20 times innawoods, and look like a retard. Bad for battery, and frustrating.

Is this Fenix light any better? How does one switch over to low light mode?

i'm pretty much set on the fenix tk16 now i'm trying to decide where to buy it and in what configuration. do i buy it with batteries for cheap or with rechargeable and a charger? if i only keep it around just in case it doesn't make sense to go rechargeable. if i want to use it a lot for example on the bike on trails, it would be stupid not to go rechargeable. but maybe i want a headlamp for the trail and for fishing then again it changes things.

>Not choosing the Klarus XT11GT for $10 more. SAD!
I know my shilling is getting annoying, but I'm telling you the Klarus is objectively better... Best in this thread for edc light. Reasons why buying the Fenix TK16 over the Klarus XT11GT is fucking dumb:
1) the Fenix comes with 1 set of non-rechargable cr123s... Might last you two weeks if you use the light sparingly. Then you buy a superior, rechargable 18650 battery AND a charger for it. Even if you buy cheap shit (which will probably break), that's at least $10...
2) now that you've paid just as much, if not more than you would have for the Klarus, you get 1000 less lumens. Again, SAD!
3) the Fenix is nowhere near as versatile (no SOS, no optional instant low, no dedicated turbo and strobe only "advanced tactical" mode
4) to access the Fenix strobe mode from off, you must hold the button down for 1 second... When you need to strobe something, you definitely don't want that delay. Klarus is instant strobe, again with 1000 more lumens.
5) USB changing whenever you need it; charge it in the car if SHTF
6) I will personally come to your house and smack you across the face for making the wrong decision >;^D

Please man! I'm telling you, the Klarus gives you the most bang for your buck. I wouldn't recommend this light to this extent if I didn't sincerely think you would appreciate its capabilities.

There's really nothing about good reflector design.

>but I'm telling you the Klarus is objectively better...
it is probably, i will concede that. pwm tho is a con and to me the usb plug is something i consider a weak spot i get the same capability with the small also usb connected external charger that comes with fenix. and i like the looks of the tk16 a bit better.

you are not wrong at all, except
>to access the Fenix strobe mode from off, you must hold the button down for 1 second...
the back switch gives you instant strobe anyhow.

Any mounts that work with Surefire Scout lights.

...b-but muh 2000 lumens... muh 300+ meters of throw... *Sniffles* ...m-muh... b-but :'^(

Hope you like your light, anon... Hope it's worth getting smacked.

>openly admitting you are shilling
What the fuck?
>>
>>35089887
he was joking. I know you're a newfag, but around here we call "recommending a product that you like" shilling.

What if you're a shill too?

how many levels of irony are you on?

it's only 1300 lums with protected battery tho. yeah it's not a bad light at all, i get it.

there is also the issue of finding a trustworthy webstore that ships to my country. and i had more luck with fenix in that regard also. amazon never seems to no matter what i want to buy ebay is full of chink scammers also not shipping cheaply here ever.

so all in all fenix looks better to me right now. i even tried buying a klarus from flashlightz.com at least checked out how it will go but they don't ship here either.

I'm on board with the reasonably priced train. I run nitecores and haven't had an issue. You get a hell of a bang for your buck, and if it breaks indeed you have bucks left to buy a new one
>>
>>35069962
what's the best flashlight that ships with a pressure switch? Or that you can get a GOOD pressure switch for?

I've bought crappy ones and I want to get one that will survive anything. Not break after a few weeks. Even if I have to pay Gucciâ„¢ prices.

looks like klarus does ship here on amazon
>Shipping & Fee Details
>Price $85.21
>AmazonGlobal Shipping + $8.50
>Estimated Import Fees Deposit + $32.08
>Total $125.79

only $126 doesn't even come with the rechargeable battery and it's not even the GT what an offer...

Carried a protac 2 for about 3 years before I got my Fenix. Solid light, never failed on me.

I would love for the PD35 to have a usb charger. That being said, I am glad that it doesn't. It's just one more thing that can break.

The Klarus is newer. I will probably get one anyhow, because I get pretty much everything and give my kids whatever I am not using.

Just got a Fenix PD35 Tac.

I guess I wish it had a bigger strike surface since I'm a commiefornian with #nofuz.

Should I get something that can be used as a better blunt force instrument, or is that a meme to begin with?

On the Fenix TK20R, the tail switch is simply an On/Off switch. The side button toggles thru the four levels. Holding it down for 1 second regardless of light level will activate the strobe. Tapping it once stops the strobe and returns you back to the light level it was at.
