Why did they use M1 carbines when the XM177 was available?
>>
>>35064448
>XM177 was available?
it wasn't, and the South Vietnam troops the green berets were leading also used the m1 carbines so sharing ammo was a bonus
>>
Green Berets operated with ARVN troops who had M1 Carbines.
>>
Because we had a fuckton of M1 carbines.
>>
>>35064492
I thought green berets operated with hill tribes and used whatever they could get their hands on

The more I read up on the Vietnam war the more surreal it seems. Guys drinking and doing drugs while deployed, lax uniform standards, half the guys don't want to be there, mix race units when race relations were still terrible, and an overall aesthetic that No other war has matched. I would love to spend 1 month as a GI during the war just to experience it.
>>
>>35064713
Mixed race units had been a thing since Korea. The military was somewhat ahead of the times regarding desegregation.
>>
>>35064448
Because it and the M16 were unreliable as fuck.

But they weren't. Slavaboos are the worst.
>>
>>35064763
Yes they were, they would carry M1A3's, M14's and AK-47's, and RPD's.
>Uncle was Green Beret
>AK's and RPD's would confuse the shit out of the NVA.
>>
>>35064763
Wrong type of powder in the initial issued 5.56 ammo, no forward assist, lack of chrome-lining, and the false claims of the M16 rifle not needing cleanup at all, to the point of most troops not even being issued with cleaning kits, resulted catastrophic failures in the Vietnam, killing potentially thousands of American soldiers.
>>
>>35064781
By the year of escalation the A1 was already in wide spread use

The Marines never had those reliability problems with their M-16s, because they never bought the "self-cleaning" bullshit and kept their rifles "Marine clean" anyway.

The XM177 wasn't immediately available when the war started. US "military advisors operating with the ARVN had to use them if they wanted a carbine.
>>
>>35064814
Which escalation? A1 came to service in 67, at which point the war had been going on for almost a decade, half of it with more active US involvement.

It also took a lot longer to issue new guns and tools to all troops.

>The Marines never had those reliability problems with their M-16s

From what I've read it was the opposite, at least in the field when the Marines would hurt for supplies;

>The only elements still capable of mounting the assault were F and G Companies, and Weise planned to use both. Weise planned to accompany Golf Company. There were fifty-four Marines left in Golf, and as Weise saddled up with them he noted that, with the exception of grenadiers and machine gunners, almost all were carrying AK-47s. Weise saw only one M16; it was carried by Captain Vargas. The only other functioning M16 was carried by Weise himself. Nevertheless, Weise later wrote that this undermanned, badly equipped company went into the assault as “a viable, spirited fighting outfit despite its two-day ordeal.

...

>“The village we occupied was a mess with nothing significant done in the way of defending it by the Marines,” wrote Sp4 Don Miller of the 106mm recoilless rifle section in HHC/3-21. “The Marines were using NVA trenches (too small for us), and even punji stakes within the perimeter hadn’t been removed. One of our guys flopped down in the grass and a stake went through his rucksack. The esprit de corps of the Marines is not in question, but their tactics and leadership always seemed suspect—and I know they were poorly supplied. They begged us for the most basic kind of stuff, like rifle cleaning equipment, oil, brushes, bore rods, etc. They seemed so raggedy.

Those are captured Malayan communist weapons, they are known to have NVA men training and teaching them tunnel base construction in South Thailand. Most of the WW2 weapons air dropped to communists in order to fight Japanese occupation were already worn out by the late 80's but the M1 looks rather new compared to their Sten guns and assorted rifles.

Actually it was a marine who brought the issues to light. While they didn't buy the self cleaning meme, they did issue the wrong cleaning gear, specifically bore brushes and rods. They were issuing M14 cleaning kits to guys with M16s.
