Hey there /k/
Ausfag here, Ive kind of plateaued at the range and want to get better at long range. Been to a couple of full bore clubs but if you dont want to just shoot peep sights they cant be assed teaching ya (fare enough as thats what they are into). I just want to use my standard hunting gear (weatherby vangard S2 in .308) as Im not keen on mastering some heavy peice of shit rifle that I will only ever punch holes in paper with. There are a fuckton of books on it with varying degrees of tacticool redundant crap, does /k/ have any recommendations on basic and practical long range shooting books, vids ect.

awsome! cheers mate
>>35062216
You could try applying the basic marksmanship principals:
1. The position and hold must be firm enough to support the weapon.
2. The weapon must point naturally at the target without undue physical effort.
3. Sight alignment and sight picture must be correct.
4. The shot must be released and followed through without any undue physical disturbance to the position.

Anyone who spent more than a couple hours total at a range will have this down already
>>35062399
at this stage im decent out to 200m but shite after that

yep this! was after more fine tuning for wind ect

>random practical tips
Well, the first is going to be:
-you have a sporter-weight barrel on your hunting rifle. You WILL need to take long breaks between groups, and probably stick to 5-shot groups, to minimize your vertical stringing. Vertical stringing comes (at least mostly) from having a hot, thin barrel.
-do not use a ranging reticle to range. I don't care how good you are, you will not be precise enough to hunt with it ethically. Buy a laser rangefinder, there are a plethora of good ones out there that will do 1km in all but the worst of the worst fog without costing over $300USD (sorry ausbro, gonna be more expensive your way). Going "oh it's 2.0 meters tall" when in reality it's 1.9 meters tall will mean you valued it at, say, 600m when in reality it was 530m, so you shoot well over it.
-a good rear bag is literally worth its weight in gold. A sand sock will get you by, but a commercial bunny-ear bag is sooo much better while taking up less space (and potentially weighing less).

In saying that I know where your comming from as many people neglect the basics trying to too hard on advanced irrelevant crap
>>35062472
>>35062472
Thanks mate ive been thinking about biting the bullet on a half decent range finder, probably buy a used one though
>>35062472
also thanks for the tip on long breaks, I have tried to have a couple of minutes between shots ever since an old farmer at the range told me to keep an eye on barrel temp by feeling it before next shot as i was unaware how much difference there was with standard sporter weight barrels
>>35062580
Doesn't have to be minutes between shots, throw 3 shots down range, with a short pause between shots, then wait a few minutes after said string. The barrel shouldn't get so hot that it'll screw up a 3 shot string, at least not in the testing I've seen with a hunting profile barrel.

Ok cheers mate! Looks like you a SE QLD fag too by the looks of that pic
>>35062580
If you can touch the back of your hand to the barrel for 30 seconds without it hurting it's cool enough.
Not all sporter-weight barrels are the same diameter, some will heat up and cool down faster than others. I have a .243 that will literally blister skin after 5 shots (1 mag) but takes all of about 3 minutes to return to ambient, and I've got a .30-06 that's noticeably thicker that can go 20 before it's too hot to touch comfortably but takes an hour to cool back down but is still a true sporter profile. Then there's my Sendero, with its "sendero" profile (fluted light varmint) that I can shoot all day single-loading but takes an hour to cool back down to ambient (it cools faster due to being stainless).

Looks like the South Dakota Badlands.

I think it's a pic from tiborasaurusrex's videos.
>>35062381
Just checking out TiborasaurusRex vids and they are actually decent. Cheers Fellas
some dumbfuck made this, maybe it's useful for you.
cliffs are:
>make a ballistics chart off jbm ballistics using your ammo specs and have it readily accessable
>use a rear bag and a bipod
>first focal plane scope would be nice but just know your scope subtensions and what they mean.
>make sure your action, scope base, and scope ring screws are all tight and loctite'd
>know distance to your targets
>shoot on paper to learn how your rifle groups with cold bore and a heated barrel.
>>35063918
>thicker barrel profile will decrease the amount of shots until your barrel heats up
>>35063979
Derp. Well, I'm fucking retarded. Yes, I meant the other way.

Ausbro, learn to reload. Whatever grouping you get will shrink to at least a quarter of its size.
The biggest improvement will be when you figure out how far to seat your bullets so they touch the lands when they're chambered.
