I'm looking to get a .22 LR rifle for plinking; what model should I get?

There are many variations on the model. Do you have one in particular?

Sold my mark 2 fv sr after I got an American. Glad to see they did something about those shit mags but plinking just aint the same without irons.
>>
>>35053854
takedown is cool but you pay a minor accuracy penalty unless you use irons or a barrel mounted optic. almost all other models are functionally identical to each other.
honestly you can buy any 10/22 and make it into any other, except it's real hard to turn a TD into a fixed barrel model or vice versa.
>tl;dr
if you want it for plinking, get any 10/22 and modify it as you discover how you like to shoot it

>>
>>35053844
It depends on what you want to do with it.
If you want something you can customize and make into just about anything, go with a 10/22.
If you want something that's great out of the box and just want something to plink with and keep it stock, get a Marlin model 60. Or if you want a mag fed go with a 795

I for one didn't think the savage mags were all that bad. My only complaint is that they don't sit completely flush.

Semi:
M&P15-22 or Sig 522 are pretty decent.
10/22 kinda sucks but has a huge aftermarket to fix its problems.

Top tier would be something like a JP-22?

>>35054576
>Anschutz 1727

Something tells me OP isn't trying to spend $3000, but I like your style.
Sig Sauer STR 200 22LR is also pretty stylin'.

But frankly, I guess something like an Anschutz 1416 or 64 MPR would make more sense?

I'm one of those few people who's never been a big fan of the 10/22 (as opposed to my Mini-14, which I absolutely love). The 10/22 has weird, fiddly controls like the magazine release and bolt release that I just never warmed up to. Also, I'm kind of lukewarm on the concept of .22 semiautos as a whole. They have reliability problems because .22 only kinda-sorta has enough oomph to cycle a semiauto action reliably.

Long story short, my vote goes to the Henry .22 levergat. It's classy, well-made, and super reliable. It's a little more expensive than some other options, but it's the kind of gun you keep around forever.
>>
Bolt:
CZ or Savage MkII. Possibly a Ruger American Rimfire if you already have a 10/22 since they use the same mags.

10/22 semiauto:
Buying a complete factory 10/22 is dumb. Buy a stripped receiver and build from there. Couple years ago I bought a full gun, threw out everything but the bolt and receiver, and started building with typical parts (GM barrel, etc). Even after dumping big money into it, accuracy still wasn't even close to my CZ 452 so I sold it. I'll build another someday, but it'll be mostly Kidd or Volquartsen parts. 10/22s are pretty fun, but they're inefficient buys. As long as you know that from the start, go nuts and have fun.

Other Semi:
Marlin Model 60s and 795s are good for the money, and the aftermarket is quietly getting better (DIP and MCARBO provide fixes for the most common complaints). Not all Model 60s come with sling studs, which is easy to fix but annoying.

A lot of people like M&P 15-22s but I have never been impressed with them. I've personally seen pins walk out of their receivers and the receiver pin holes themselves deform pretty badly under use. And their accuracy ranges from OK to not good. Appleseed banned them recently due to OOB problems.

Best way to get a rimfire AR is probably putting a 10/22 in a chassis (there are several).
>>
>>35056727
I am buying this soon.
Just got a model 19 with a six inch barrel
Cowboy here I come
(Untill I suppress that 22 levergat)
>>
>>35054707
My mossberg was in great condition when i bought it. Buying a broken gun and not contacting the company is very cuckish.

That being said, I came here to recommend the 702 plinkster. It has a 10/22 style action and can be had for under $130 almost everywhere. If you get the synthetic stock, it is light as shit.
I put about 2000 rounds through mine plinking since I bought it last December and the only issue I had was after about 800 or so rounds, from buildup and no lube, the action didnt want to cycle properly. I hosed the hell put of it with WD40 and havent had an issue since. Also very accurate. We were shooting empty .45 cases from 25-30 yards away with iron sights.

Highly recommended gun.
>>
>>35053983
>unless you use irons or a barrel mounted optic

As opposed to all those other methods of taking aim.
>>
>>35056727
Henry guns are really nice.
I've also been very impressed with the upper-range (but still cheap) Savages seem really impressively well-built to me. You won't burn through ammo so fast with a bolt-action, and it's good practice for when you get a bolt-centerfire.

I respect the 10/22's reputation, but I think the factory triggers on those guns are horrible, and the action makes this cheap rattle shuffle sound that I find very irritating. They are not fun to take apart and put back together.
>>
>>
>>35054393
This guy 10/22s.
>>
>>35053844
Ruger American Rimfire. It takes 10/22 mags so if you ever want a 10/22 you'll already have the magazines.

It's actually more expensive than a 10/22 right now but bolt actions are fun, and it will never have cycling problems like a 22 semi auto will.
>>
>>35053844

CCMG .22 Conversion Kit if you have an AR. They're going on sale lately for $130-$150.
>>
>>35058170
I advise against it, .22LR in an AR barrel is not good, you'll clog the gasport.

Just get a complete dedicated .22LR upper instead.
>>
>>35056727
Henry's are damn sexy. Been looking into one for my first .22. Trying to convince myself not to spend the extra money on the Golden Boy, but damn is it pretty.
>>
>>35058273
One round of .223 afterward cleans the entire gas tube and port.

The bigger problem is the twist rate in most ARs is way too fast for 22lr, and your accuracy suffers. That being said, I have one of the CMMG conversion kits and at least out to 50 yards it's minute of can accurate.

Answer is pretty simple.

Marlin Model 60, tube fed (there is an equivalent magazine fed) if you want an accurate, all rounder and good looking rifle and you don't want to customize it, apart from the trigger guard made of plastic breaktastic - there's an aftermarket made of alloy tho

10/22 if you want to customize your rifle in about anything you want, also they have good factory magazines too.
Uglier than the Marlins, IMHO.

if you want more accuracy out of the box, bolt action Savage or CZ

my rifles
>>
>>35060021
Marlins are decent but unless you only plan to shoot a few rounds the tube feed system is a hindrance.

ar-7, great fun, can get pretty tight grouping at 100 yards with its awesome iron sights. breaks down for innawoods shtf. never had a problem with it after close to 2000 rounds.

Only negative is you can't modify it or add a scope or if won't fit in the stock.
>>
>>35054393
>throw everything away

No, that's when your buy an 80% receiver to place the old parts in to start the process all over again
>>
>>35053844
I would say get a conversion kit and use that, but those have accuracy issues. I would go for a 10/22 desu. If you want an AR-style 22, go for the 15-22. Got one recently, really nice gun. Fun, accurate etc.

I've owned both a savage MKII and a Ruger American rimfire and here are my experiences

Savage MKII
-bolt is smooth as fuck, like holy shit I've never felt a smoother bolt
-accurate as all hell. Didn't need to be "fowled up" to shoot straight
-Ate cheap ammo well
-HEAVY as fuck (I think mine was an older model), about 9 pounds, which is just a bit too much for a plinkster
-can't single load
-the barrel was a bit forward from the chamber, making it kind of annoying to clean because you can't see where your patch is going and if it's aligned with the barrel
-The magazines and the magazine well were a huge weak point. The whole construction just feels cheap and sometimes you got to try multiple times to get the magazine seated right. 10 round mags stick out in an awkward way right where I put my hand, and make it hard to shoot prone.

Ruger American
-lightweight, handy, and downright fun.
-bolt is a little sticky, it frees up after break in but overall not as smooth
-overall not quite as accurate (maybe the barrel length has to do with it) needs to be "fowled up" to shoot well.
-I've had a few bad primer strikes on some ammo, might be the ammo, it is .22 but the savage was 100% reliable.
-iron sights are a pain in the ass to adjust.
-Ruger 10 round rotary mags are solid and reliable. Easy mag seating and releasing. Fit flush with the rifle and feed well. Can also be single loaded just for shits and giggles
-easy as fuck to clean

I don't regret selling my Save MK II for my Ruger American but here's what I would say. If you plink more often then you hunt, get the Ruger, if you hunt more often and need something that drives tacks at the expense of having something that is fun to shoot and easy to maintain, get the Savage. Haven't tried the B22 FVSR, but they seem more like what savage is going for: serious hunting rifle.
>>
>>35060654
I have an AR-7 and absolutely love it. Even bought an aftermarket all-steel barrel for it. Just make sure to feed it top-shelf ammo - it chokes on the cheap stuff.

10/22 for maximum customization. I'm gathering parts right now for a build, you can easily spend over $1000 on fancy 10/22 parts if you go that route.

On that note for someone that may possibly know: are Kidd barrels worth the money or is there a less expensive option that's as good?
>>
>>35066342
I was at the range last week and the guy next to me had one. Let me put a few rounds through it. Fun to shoot. Very light compared to an AR. He said it was finicky with ammo, but I didn't have any problems. I have a 10/22, but I'm considering getting one.

cz452 or 453. It's a bolt action. With open sights and a weaver rail for possible scope. It doesn't matter if you get single set trigger or traditional trigger. I got the 452 years ago, Varmint edition. Turns out you really don't "need" a bull barrel but the weight does help keep things steady. I regret not getting open sights as it would have been the cheapest and most painless way to develop skills with open long gun sights. Now I just don't have the time and inclination to purchase another rifle. It's a different sense of achievement when you bag game with just open sights. I can get groups about 1-2 inches wide at 50 yards which is pretty good for non-competition ammo. My rifle likes regular old Federal Champion round nose and CCI mini mags (but less so). Haven't ever tried premium 22 rounds as I've spent more time on pistols over the years. Haven't done any modifications, trigger has a little creep but even so it is the most accurate firearm I have. I could always install a "yo dave" trigger kit but I think I'm going to try shoot it enough to wear in the parts as is some day first.

Can't speak for the ARX, or other replica .22s, but after impulse buying an ATI STG-44 .22 I can't recommend, or say much of anything good about them. Unnecessarily heavy, finnicky expensive mags, useless handguard that still gets hot as fuck if you're doing any actual sustained shooting without bags or a rest, only adequately accurate, and too expensive for what it is. The big branded wooden crate it comes in is the best thing about having one, actually shooting and cleaning it.. not so much.
