I actually have one of those scopes, it's a heavy old bitch and it makes a more than a little spooky whine when it's powered up but it's neat. An AN/PVS-1 Starlight scope, mine came straight from SAC where it lived it's life staring at coyotes humpin' in the darkness.

I'd say my favorite weird attachment had to the M16 RAW, a rocket propelled demolition charge that looked like a damn bowling ball. Never adopted but they dicked around with it. The 1960's-70's had some damn weird stuff cobbled together, shit like the Childer's SOW and Gordon CSWS, the Remington 7188 and China Lake 40mm. All the way to the SPIW program which was like a proto-OICW.

Yeah, having an explosive charge the size of a bowling ball attached on the front of your gun, no way that's gonna end bad

The AN/PVS-1 is painfully rare because it was complicated and expensive to build. They simplified the design when they produced the AN/PVS-2 and as I've learned they will not fit even an A2 carry handle. The bracket for the AN/PVS-1/2 is intended only for the A1 carry handle.
However you could get a hold of an AN/PVS-4 for roughly 800-1100 dollars and mount it up to any A1/2/3 carry handle. Those things are Generation 2 night vision and pretty damn clear at that, still like a watermelon but way more functional than the AN/PVS-1/2.

They made an adapter to connect scope to an Elcan base. I know, because I have an AN/PVS-2 with it, as well as a spare mount and Elcan base. (The Elcan base provides for elevation & windage adjustment.)

Pic related. LOL

They've got an adapter for the M14 too. It would be pretty great for hog hunting at night.
>>
>>35054650
I had one of those things, they're neat but they can overstress the Elcan base a bit if they're worn out. I was thinking about the standard carry handle mounts for A1. It's way easier to just get an AN/PVS-4 if you want an NV scope on an A2.
If you get really technical the AN/PVS-1 doesn't even need the normal adapter plates, it's windage and elevation adjustment is integral to the scope itself and that was dropped from the PVS-2 along with a dial adjusted front focus. My PVS-1 is a rugged old shit, did some minor housekeeping and maintenance on it and it's still cooking along with it's original 1965 dated intensifier tube.

Explain, please. The Elcan base is rock solid.
I have had it on my M1A and shot it many times with excellent group. It's funon teh AK. Even put it on an Ruger 10/22 for shits & giggles.

BTW, my AN/PVS-2 is one of those Israeli remanufactured models and has great light and no fisheye/distortion. Also, different reticle.

My Elcan base was from an extremely early C79 so it had seen some use, when fitted with a PVS-2 it had a bit of wobblyness to it and seemed to wander a little bit from what it was adjusted. I do know modern Elcans have improved bases so it might have simply been something related to the vintage of mine. I do know the early C79 had some issues so my experience could very well be related to the vintage of the base. The kick in the ass is the adapter plate is rare enough that you only rarely encounter one in the wild and most Elcans aren't much better in that department either.
