are the SAS/SBS deserving of their borderline mythical status?
>>
They haven't fought a top tier opponent in 70 years. The Iraqis kicked their ass in the 90s

wat.
they've been in all the same fights we have.
SBS were heavily involved in afghanistan, and still are. SAS were the spearhead of Task Force Black in Iraq.

Why not?
It makes for good tv.

nice 1.
why don't we ask the 12 navy SEALs who were killed by a single RPG how good US SF are?
>>

>>35052126
Well that's nicely set the level of discourse for this particular thread

Fat children using dead allies as score points for internet arguments

yeah let's ignore their fuckups and change the subject.

Actually B sqns exploits hardly over shadowed what A and D squadron did on Operation Granby.

>>35052082
Im not going to say that they influenced every other NATO special forces unit but they influenced every other NATO special forces unit. The CAG is a copy of the SAS, they even break down into sabre squadrons.

One patrol of eight being poorly planned and executed while the rest of the Regiment did perfectly well taking out or assisting aircraft taking out Scuds does not mean the Iraqis kicked their ass.

Ignoring all the shenanigans in this thread.
Kind of I guess? I mean pretty much every special forces modeled themselves after the SAS so that kind of takes away from the "mythical" factor. But for the sheer awe of "holy shit that guy is SAS/SBS" I'd say they're more like legends then mythical
>>
Yes.
Even if for only the fact they pioneered basically everything which constitutes contemporary special operations.

Because a single patrol went bad?

i wonder if sas/sbs have ever gotten toe to toe with delta ranger or seals in a black ops that the public will never hear about it
>>
>>35052278
Blue on blue would be rare among such elite units due to their small numbers and much better communication between allies.

Can he give the police orders?
>>
>>35052513
No, but he isn't taking them either. There's a system in which his boss gets priority and everyone in that CoC takes precedence over police operations.

They are incredibly good. Do they have equivalents elsewhere? Yes.
>>
>>35052278

no i meant as in there was probably something both forces had a mission where they were both on opposing sides and fraught each other and that only the most upper upper ranks knew about

The (((Gell-Mann))) Effect.
>>
>>35052402
How does this scenario work?

The cops are probably not allowed to give him orders and in contrast the guy is probably not allowed to give the bolice orders unless he is an officer or something.

He is probably worth 10 dudes and then some but what if shit goes south and he has no battle buddies with him?
>>
>>35052082
Probably not but not because they're bad at their job. Special Forces have always been since overhyped by design.

At least stuff like LRRP had some value but the high speed / low drag stuff not so much. The first commando raids in Norway, the Channel Islands or even Bordeaux had little strategic value, they're were designed to boost morale at home when everything else was going to shit. No Special Forces units ever won a war.

Nowadays they're bad asses but also a great recruiting tool for people that couldn't hack selection and end up in other branches/units.

Why
>>
>>35052831
It wasn't exactly depicted that way in the film. I don't want to ruin anything, as dumb as that sounds, but the killings were generally shown as being justifiable. In any event, in both real life and the film, one terrorist was captured alive.
>>
>>35052660
>shopped out his tats

Opsec maybe? Tats can be a way of identification. Just one look at /pol/ can show you how easy it is to track down masked people from photos by being autistic enough.

Aside from the fact that there's a ton of pictures of it out already.

no
they're underfunded and understaffed
-source: Andy McNab in his autobiographic book. (talks about SAS being sent in to extract British embassy staff during invasion of Kuwait. American SEALS had helicopters, SAS had boats.)

I just wonder how they would interact with the police and SWAT guys. Do they communicate strategies?
>>
>>35053159
The police are made aware and the head of their team will be involved, because from a legal standpoint it is a police matter. They do not get any say in the tactical level of things once the Army has been involved.

Their job is to make sure nothing gets out of hand until whichever SAS or SBS squadron tasked with ending things arrives.
