Good defensive ammo for my G17?
>>
let's be honest for one second, any bullet is going to drop someone if you hit them, the only thing you should be worrying about is overpen
>>
>>35049690
Understandable. I'm a new gun owner and still a bit confused by ammo grain and what I should use for my gun. Obviously I'm going to use whatever is cheapest for the range, but when it comes to home defense I'm not too sure.
>>
>>35049677
>Micro
>reduced recoil

Not necessary for a full size gun, just use the 147 grain.

Yeah thats a good one OP.

Pretty much go for heaviest bullet for the caliber, so 147gr typically for 9mm. With the goal being maximum expansion with a minimum 12" penetration.

Thanks bud.

Over-penetration is only a thing with rifles. Pistol calibers generally suck at killing, except magnum revolver calibers like 357 mag and up.
>>
>>35049757
The 124 looks like it performs marginally better than the 147 though.
>>
>>35049766
Then how about you test a 9mm on m your brain and see how much it sucked at killing you.
>>
>>35049766
Better work on my aim then.
>>
>>35049786
Does a lighter bullet just mean it travels farther so more accurate or?
>>
>>35049677
Lots of fuddlore ITT

With pistol rounds, you're essentially looking for 12-18" inches of penetration and also expansion.

Penetration is preferable to expansion.

Example,

Round A penetrates 18", but only expands to .60"

Round B penetrates 14", but expands to .70"

Round A wins out every time.

I found this. I would of thought the heavier the bullet the higher the penetration but it looks like the 124 grain penetrates farther than the 147.
>>
>>35049814
No difference in accuracy or range really. But different weight bullets will have different point of impacts, so practice with the weight you intend to use. Lighter bullets are faster, but heavier ones are, well heavier. Imo the 124 and 147gr rounds preform pretty similar and it's all in personal preference. I'd recommend both over 115.
>>
>>35049851
I said that backwards.
>>
>>35049851
It's because with every round there is an optimum weight for efficient penetration.

In 9mm it's 124g
>>
>>35049857
Keep in mind most guns are designed around 9mmP NATO loads, which use a 124gr bullet.

Sure, if the fucking idiots would have made the hollow point cavity smaller then we could see some decent penetration to match that velocity.

No doubt I shilled their ammo more than a few times here but it rubs me wrong that there is not a FMJ version that has a hollow cavity inside but penetrates deeper and offers more reliable feeding. No doubt at that velocity it would fragment but surely, much less than their fucking meme tier "star burst fragmentation".

This round which is pretty cool is insulting when you see the 30 grain disc penetrate BARELY to an adequate depth.

Those fuckers need to relaunch the ammo with a redesigned bullet, end of rant.
>>
>>35049677
Yes but it's over priced.

The 147gr standard pressure HST is a better and cheaper choice.

>>35049690
>any bullet is going to drop someone if you hit them
Clearly a ballistics expert.

>>35049766
>Over-penetration is only a thing with rifles.
No

>>35049814
Typically lighter bullets(in the same caliber) will have higher velocity. So it should have less drop and that's about it.

>>35049829
>With pistol rounds, you're essentially looking for 12-18" inches of penetration and also expansion.

Penetration is preferable to expansion.

Generally speaking, yes.

>Round A penetrates 18", but only expands to .60"
>Round B penetrates 14", but expands to .70"
>Round A wins out every time.
Not really, idyllic penetration is 14-16" on a human. At 18" you're risking overpenetration in some circumstances, there's also not a whole lot of blood vessels in most people's back fat so a round that penetrates a little less but expands more will produce more meaningful trauma per wound.

>>35049851
Penetration in this case is likely to be more so a function of expansion and energy than weight.

Wider bullets will penetrate less than narrower bullets with similar energy. Generally speaking in 9mm you're going to be looking for a bullet that expands ~.62" and penetrates ~14-16". it's also worth noting that IRL ballistic performance tends to more closely mimic what you see in 4ld tests than bare gel tests so those are the best to look at.

Both the 124gr and 147gr HST are top of the line loads, some ballistics experts recommend going for the heavier bullets in these kinds of situations as they supposedly offer slightly more reliable real world performance. YMMV.

Hollow points are a meme. Flat nose rounds are king for self defense, hard cast even better i.e federal flat nose or buffalo bore outdoorsman

>>
>>35049940
yeah if Gabby had been an assailant then I'd say the 9mm still did its job since it took her out of the fight and rendered her a permanent potato.

this

PDX1 147gr is my choice

>>35050432
>heavy hollow points that fail to expand still cause wounding just as much as a flat point
>heavy hollow points that don't fail prevent overpenetrating the target
>NYPD shootings where the round penetrates all the way through the bad guy's body but get stopped by the bad guy's Carhartt jacket after exiting
>hollowpoints are a meme

Dat expansion though.
