But the idea that "I can just replace my things" isn't universally true, unless they're insured your stuck with jack shit if they never find the guy, the way I rationalize it is that if a person is attempting to rob you or is breaking into your house they have shown that they are incapable of functioning in a normal society and violence is likely to be the only form of authority that they respond to, plus I'd be willing to bet that if 50% of people that attempted to rob or mug someone just got shot you would see the number of attempted robberies go down, it's all a risk vs reward game make the risk too great and they stop playing.
