Should I become a fighter pilot? If so Navy or Air Force?
>>
You don't just decide on day to "become" a fighter pilot, faggot. And obviously Navy, since you're a faggot.
>>
Navy is typically harder due to carrier landings, really terrible selection process, and you wont get any of the new toys.

Air Force or Marines if you want new "fighter" jets.
>>
>>35046071
I'm thinking of applying to a service academy or AFROTC or NROTC, dumbass. And I know the selection process.
>>
>>35046071
this desu
>>
>>35046032
I've been told that the Navy actually has more pilots than any other branch by my recruiter but I don't have any stats to back it up. If it trues Im guessing this means its easier in the Navy

HOWEVER, Congress recently approved the creation of the United States Space Corps for 2018 under the Department of the Air Force (Same way marines are under dept of the navy) so if you wanna be on the enterprise get up in the air force
>>
>>35046071
This

Also have fun being a hull technician when you wash out
>>
>>35046032
DCS World, They'll let you fly Russian Planes, More Air Time, and you aren't put on a contract that gives you a chance at being a fighter pilot.
>>
Who gets to fuck shit up more fighter pilots or attack helicopter pilots?
>>
>>35046863
Depends on the aircraft. F-15Cs aren't destroying anything, but F-16s do lots of strike missions. It's not a sure thing.
>>
>>35046032
Is it really that simple? In the IDF only one in like, 20 get to start the course (there are four selection staves before starting, which test psychology coordination, fitness etc.), which only one in six finish. And of them only a third or fourth are fighter pilots, the rest cargo or heli.
>>
>>35046071
Uh, yeah you can. If someone is qualified, they could get up and go apply to OTS and get a pilot slot. Especially right now when the Air Force is dying for pilots.
They are literally giving their fighter pilots 400,000 dollar retention bonuses and they are still leaving.

I'm planning on finishing school once I separate and taking a shot at OTS. I'd do ROTC, but I do not want to commit without knowing what I will be doing. If AF OTS doesn't work out, I'm gonna try to fly for the Army.
>>
>>35046032
I you had to ask, the answer is no. Seriously.
>>

Wait so that means that more pilot positions are being opened?
Will my childhood dream of flying the most advanced peice of equipment in the armed forces finally become true?
>>
OP is definitely possible. I'm in primary in the Navy right now.

>did decent enough in high school
>got NROTC scholarship
>underachieved my way through college
>selected nuke sub at service selection even though I put aviation first
>got really lucky and was able to switch to aviation

You don't need to be a stud or hotshot. Just work hard and have a little bit of luck.
>>
>>35048501
Thanks bro. I think I'd be happy to get anything with an afterburner on it. Do you know what you're gonna fly?
>>
>>35047523
The airlines pay more, and you are home.
>>
Being on 4Chan disqualifies you from being a pilot, a ground pounder...maybe
>>
>>35048531
Not yet. Right now I'm leaning towards wanting P-8s or E-6, but I'll be happy flying anything.
>>
>>35048546
Actually 4chan is filled with fighter pilots.
>>
>>35047229
Dude, no you can't. I'm an instructor pilot in USAF UPT. You cannot just "get" a fighter. They arent giving them out like candy, you still need to track a T-38, which is still essentially a 4-5/30 chance.

I thought they were handing out T-38s to near 50% of classes now. When I was leaving Vance last year they were having some guys PCS to ENJJPT because they didn't have the training capacity for all the T-38s one class got, did they slow that back down?

Possibility of being stuck somewhere like Oklahoma, also the majority of their pilots come from the Academy and a VAST majority of their fighter pilots are from the academy with top scores.

AF is really a brainiac in-house branch.

Get to travel a lot and if you like ships get to be on a ship. 30% chance of being a fighter pilot.

Their pilots are all Academy trained and Academy educated.

The ground crews are just a means to that end. I'm not talking about them.

Enjoy it man. Because your also gonna have a 2 month wait if you go to Corpus for Primary.

>>35048758
Is Oklahoma really that bad?
>>
>>35047523
Not him, but a small part of the reason is because the pilots don't get to fly hardly at all. They knew they weren't going to fly every day, but some of them can go a month without putting in more than 8 hours of flight, which becomes old. Especially when lots of your ten year contract you feel as though you didn't do much.
>>
>>35048895
>implying they will actually get any reasonable numbers of the F35B
>>
>>35048927

Replacing all of their harriers as well as getting F-35Cs to replace their old F-18s.
>>
>>35048898
I was being a little dramatic, perhaps. Lived there for 12 years and saw about as much of it as I'd like to, though I don't think it's a bad place to settle down and live a quiet life. Cheap gas, good gun laws, lots of cheap land to shoot on. The E-6s fly out of Tinker AFB, which is about 20 minutes from Oklahoma City, so if you want night life that's really the only place nearby to find it. Also hang out at Toby Keith's restaurant often enough and you'll eventually run into the guy, pretty cool. Really it's not bad, just nothing particularly exciting: no beaches, no mountains unless you want to drive southwest a couple hours to the Wichitas. If you do go down there, check out Meer's Restaurant for some good burgers and bombass scratch-made cobbler and ice cream. Finally, Tinker is an Air Force Base first and foremost, so naturally it's a pretty nice one.
I put down Corpus for Primary but I'm thinking of switching it Whiting. Florida is nicer than I thought it would be.

Military aviation is actually work. Being an airline pilot is basically being payed to take two weeks vacation every month.
>>
>>35050016
No

>>35046032
Go Air National Guard, google what units are in your state or nearby, and start contacting them.
>>
>>35048800
Nope, it isn't and has never been anywhere near 50%. The most I've ever seen in a class was 8, out of between 27 and 32 people in the class. Even when they were sending guys to ENJJPT, it was because the 38 squadrons were backed up because of weather and maintenance.
>>
>>35050483
This is the only way to guarantee yourself a fighter, is to get a slot to an actual fighter guard unit. Good luck, there may be 10 slots for all the fighter guard units in the entire country per year, if that, and they are ridiculously competitive from what I hear. Best way to go about it is to get your foot in the door at a unit, build up some relationships there and hope they open up a slot. If you do get a slot, you are going to fly what that unit flies, provided you pass UPT.
>>
>>35048565
thats a funny way to spell "cock jockeys"
>>
Do you get more flight time flying jets or flying helicopters?
>>
>>35050784
For real? Do airline pilots not fly often?
>>
>>35053426
No, they fly often it's just easy flying and that's all your job entails. Military aviation is bogged down with "queep", as we call it. Office jobs, paperwork, bullshit that isn't actually flying related.
>>
>>35053509
I heard army warrant pilots deal less with that kinda stuff is that true or just BS?
>>
>>35053553
Wouldn't know for sure since I'm AF, but I would assume that they do have to deal with that stuff a lot less. Warrant Officers are kind unique in that their job is ONLY to fly.
>>
>>35051888

>>
What if I just want to be a helicopter pilot? Why is everything always about jets? Is the rotary life any easier to get too? Troop transport or attack chopper, either is fine with me.
>>
>>35054426
Don't know about Army side, but AF you probably get more time flying helos. Depends on what jet, but fighters probably fly 1-2 times a week at best.

>>
>>35046032
Better get you that college education, which somehow makes you more qualified to fly a plane for the US Air Force/Navy for some reason.
>>
Do bomber pilots still get to fly and drop bombs ?
>>
>>35056152
This shit makes me laugh everytime I hear retarded sweaties loudly bellowing it. What fucking qualification do you think we should have, first grade? You have to draw the line somewhere, and college is the lowest level that weeds out generally incompetent retards. it provides a baseline requirement that ensures we don't have to put in the extra effort to sort through people who should be flipping burgers rather than in charge of 9 figure aircraft in combat. Does it automatically 100% guarantee someone is going to be a good pilot? No, but a college graduate, on the whole, is better equipped to handle the things it takes to be a good pilot.

But besides all that, we don't have a fucking problem with supply. There are way more people applying and striving to become pilots than there are slots. You know the fucking requirements, so if you really want to get a pilot slot, get a fucking degree and quit bitching and moaning about it.
>>
>>35056504
Yes. B-1's mainly, but B-52 get some action as well. B-2 pilots fly T-38's on a daily basis to stay current.

>>
>>35062171
Idk, nothing in particular. I think part of it is I might wanna fly commercial, and p-8s would be perfect for that. But also because it's easier than jets I guess.
>>
>>35062419
true that. If I'm not mistaken we've got a few out in Sicily and Japan as well.
>>
>>35062810
737 type rating means almost jack shit. Airlines will take fighters before maritime bubbas.
>>
>>35062985
Really? I figured maritime would be more desired, since it's multi engine jets, just like commercial airliners (at least for p-8)
>>
>>35063119

Because they want good pilots. People that selected with the bottom half of their primary class and never did anything tactical or flew around the boat isn't appealing. Super easy to teach a fighter guy how to fly big wing, really hard to teach a dumb person not to be dumb.
>>
>>35063311
Sure, chances are jet guys were on average at the top of their class, but that doesn't mean there's no maritime guys that did really well. And if you got your wings, your definitely not dumb.
>>
What if you wear glasses? Would it be easy to enlist and then go officer? Make the guv pay for your lasik and college while your in lmao
>>
>>35063409
I paid out of pocket for Lasik while in NROTC. Had to pass the flight physical so I stood a chance at getting aviation.
>>
>>35063467
Damn that sucks. My vision held out until I got to flight school, they just gave me BC glasses when I got there.
>>
>>35063383
I guess. The maritime advanced syllabus is like 20 flights or something, right? And it's just instruments and senpai stuff. How much time can you spend learning not to crash a king air?
>>
OP take it from someone who has a lot of POG friends. Be a Warrant and go Rotary, you actually do your job a lot more, and it's legit better in general. Wont get paid as much but still more than you can complain about.
>>
>>35063511
Correction. 30 flights. Select maritime if you want, do your takehome test, and go join a community full of NFOs.
>>
>>35048800
Last time I saw more than 5 T-38s drop (which usually have only 2-3 fighters, the rest are FAIP or RC-135), it was back when T-38s were mostly dropping AMC birds. Even when the T-38 classes are bigger, the fighter pipeline isn't, so the guys that get those extra T-38s just wind up flying C-130s and C-17s like if they'd gone T-1 except they don't get to stop for lunch out of state as often.
>>
>>35063119
Type ratings and multi engine, crew jet, non-centerline-thrust time are very valuable to the airlines. It can be difficult to teach a veteran solo flyer how to be a copilot.
>>
>>35050784
No. I don't know about military pilots, but entry level pilots in the airlines get fucked. Hard. They make $30,000 a year salary-- $40,000 at best. The newbies get shoved into the worst red eye/early morning/consecutive shifts.

So, the newest least experienced people in the industry often have the hardest time. It takes 8-10 years before you're making a healthy 6 figures flying cushy gigs.
>>
>>35063467
And did you get aviation? What was your degree in?
I have this fear that I will try college and let myself fail, then just blow my brains out
>>
>>35063830

I've heard this as well from my Canadian counterparts. Pay is garbage, hours are shit, a lot of AC's are bad with crew relations, top end pay isn't what it used to be, etc.

Doesn't sound like my idea of a good time.

Still better than before I guess, when a few years back only top guy got a fighter and rest of T-38 guys were either FAIPs or heavies. My class was 24 or so and the instructors acted like that was a ton. Shitbag saudis always inflate the classes though
>>
>>35063807

Please tell me college isn't as hard as I'm psyching myself into thinking it is
>>
