Any enlisted airmen here? How was your job pick, did you get what you wanted? I need 9 AFSC's and I can barely get 5. I'm getting pressure from my recruiter to go to MEPS and swear in already but the uncertainty is hard to swallow.

Any particular interests? An important consideration is what bases your job can be stationed in. A buddy of mine from BMT had only like 3 or 4 bases he could go to, and they were in kinda shitty areas, meanwhile my AFSC (3D1x2) has a huge seleection in the US and overseas. Don't shout. You won't be any good at it. The worst officers, without exception, shout at their guys. You aren't there for that. You should really keep communication with them to a minimum, but you should know as much about them as possible. If they're in front of you for an interview show a genuine interest. Cover them, protect them from the stuff coming downward and do absolutely everything for them.

Ask others for advice. SNCOs will give you it. They'll laugh about it among themselves, but they've heard it all before and they'll know what to do.

The only thing you should come down hard on is anything going outside the system. If an NCO has a reputation for unofficial punishments or bullshit then put a stop to it, immediately. The last thing you want is a fuckup down low, or God forbid something involving the newspapers. Your career will be ended, bigly.

In 2-58 battalion in the 198th on Sand Hill, 5 drill sergeants got suspended because a couple of the female trainees (who are still there as holdovers) accused some drill sergeants of 'touching them inappropriately'. Other females in my company who had interacted with them told us that they were completely making it up. But it became a big ongoing scandal and we even were given a phonecall to call home and tell our parents that we were in a different company than the one where that was happening to make sure they weren't panicking that their kids were getting molested or some shit.
So it seems like it's just typical girl crying rape to cover her own fuckups. Also, that same cycle had a couple girls prostituting themselves to the guys in their company.

As for things I wished I knew before I started OSUT: hard to say, it's almost a good thing I went in uninformed. I'm glad I didn't know it would be boring as fuck. You'll be standing in formation at parade rest for longer than you would think you'd be capable of without going insane.

>>35050101
Most active duty guys enter as 11x and get randomly split into 11b and 11c at reception. The companies are homogeneous (either all 11b or 11c) so you won't be training with 11Bs if you're 11C.
I'm Guard so I got to pick and I went in as 11B.

Hey lads, so after my chat with the recruiter I know that in my heart of hearts that I'm not right for officer training, but I'm not put off working in the army. So my new plan is to find something that I can really specialize in.

What would be idea for me is something where I work in a small team, doing something pretty tricky, with a fair amount of action.

So far the closets thing I've found is Ammunition Technician because the bomb disposal stuff sounds just like the sort of thing that appeals to me. I've been going down the role finder but does anyone else has any recommendations for me?

Greetings from PA anons.
my girlfriend's older brother who 'wants to join the Navy', who's really not working on PT, and already had problems on his first try because of a preexisting mental condition. Spends most of the day eating, playing vidya games, etc. Known the guy for years, and from how much trouble he had socializing with people in high school, and generally gives up easily.

I care for the dude, but from hearing him talk about joining the FFL if the Navy doesn't work out, and listing all these reasons why he wants to join, but never really addressing the fact that he doesn't even meet the minimum fitness requirements makes me mad as hell. Like, how are you going to get into the French Foreign Legion if you complain about not having your favorite kind of juice and have pt scores below probationary? I think it's unfair to him that no one in the family is being honest about the situation, and I don't want to be overstepping either.

Any advice?

About as likely as when a male manager interacts with a female worker or when a male CEO interacts with a low level female admin, but in the military there's a chance that they could get punished for acting on it unlike the civilian world.

This jsut flat out isnt true. I actually like the 18x and seal entry programs however they definitely serve another purpose. And thats to get a lot of failures so they army and navy can shuttle those failures into undermanned moss and rates. I agree with that though, if youre stupid enough to take an 18x contract and youre not fully prepared than you deserve to fall into needs of the army.
Same for navy, which iw as in, like half the undes guys on my boat were bud duds.

I thought they were getting rid of seabees? Also i was quite surprised to find out that you have to be a citizen to join the seabees. Why is that the case?
>>
>>35052029
So you're a navy vet and are just assuming 18x and BUDS are the same program?

There is at least 5 months of training before SFAS (not including holdover time between classes) where most x-rays will quit. Those who don't quit went through OSUT/Airborne/SOPC together immediately before SFAS. Going into selection with a group of people you already know very well and have trained with for months is a huge advantage.

So like I originally said *x-rays who actually make it to SFAS* supposedly have a better selection rate.

Thats not what i said you mouth breather. I mean the are similar contracts as in you can come in off teh street and get one. Second off the are even more similar as Pre-buds takes place befoer buds so they build comradery there. But again that has nothing to do with my point.
>So like I originally said *x-rays who actually make it to SFAS* supposedly have a better selection rate.
Youre still originally wrong. Post data. The vast majority of people becoming green berets are current enlisted. Even if you make it to SFAS as an 18x you still have a very low chance of getting selected. Its definitely possible but still low as fuck.

I have no idea what you mean by this. Really, I don't. Even if you get a small unit posting you're still going to be tacked on to something a lot bigger. There are, to my knowledge, a grand total of three properly independent small units that don't have immediate oversight. None are possible to join as a civilian. All are extremely selective, and all are extremely boring.

>>35056906
Officers are managers. They don't do that on top of "regular duties", that is their regular duty.

>not to be filling in health and safety forms
This really isn't for you. If you're interested in being an AT and hate the idea of filling in forms, and want "action", then there's something wrong. Bomb doctors require immense patience and an absolute 100 percent interest in doing things the correct way.

Not to nitpick but:

>Commissioned Officers are administrators and sometimes technical experts if they are a pilot, HUMINT, SOF, a Doctor, or some such thing
>SNCOs are managers and subject matter experts
>NCOs are technical experts with some management duties
>Warrants are technical experts
>Junior enlisted are worker bees becoming technical experts

Upper management and low-level admin have some overlap though. Otherwise spot on.

You have got to understand this about the Marines: They're all PR and no substance.

The main reason you don't want to join the Marines as Enlisted is that they do not want you there any longer then necessary, They want them young and stupid and a little crazy, and four years in the corps tends to strip these traits. That's why Marine living conditions suck and promotions are slow. They want the disillusioned marines out ASAP.

When it comes to Officers, your prospects are much better but again, they want you out in 5 years. In order to do this, they give out slow promotions to the officers as well. Since most officers are entitled College Graduates, and given the two promotion attempts rule, this is sufficient to ensure only those who enjoy sucking the green weenie stay. The big issue here is all the Marines really trained you to do here is administrate or if your lucky, pilot. If you administrate, you have no real edge over a civilian who was administrating straight out of college. If you're a pilot however, prospects are much better.
>>
>>35058639
So I should definitely try for the Navy first?
>>
>>35058639

>Private industry won't teach you to administrate

It's actually not easy to find an org willing to train you and immediately put you in charge of 20-100 people right out of college while also paying a solid wage.

Management is *all* about experience, and the military lets you short circuit the part where you're an assistant manager in retail or food service.

Unfortunately, mid-level management/admin/consulting jobs don't actually pay that well, which is why many junior officers eat a compensation cut coming out of the military.
>>
>>35058727
>It's actually not easy to find an org willing to train you and immediately put you in charge of 20-100 people right out of college while also paying a solid wage.

Agreed, however, let's look at the process that the Marines go though in making an officer.

First is just getting selected for OCS. I'm not sure how it's done to be honest, but your percentages to get into OCS per year can vary wildly depending on Marine Corps funding.

Next is OCS it's self. From what I can gather, about 20% drop out due to Mental Fatigue, and anywhere between 10% to 30% drop out due to physical injury. Taking the minimums, you have at least a 30% chance of getting dropped. Compound that with a 10% drop rate due to OCS for performance issues, that's a 40% chance of not finishing OCS. So you've essentially wasted at least a year of your life trying to become a Marine Officer only to leave either due to your own mental in-fortitude or no fault of your own, AND you're possibly walking out with injures that the government (as far as I know) won't compensate you for.

So the time investment to reward chances if it just comes to being put in charge of people right out of college doesn't fit. There are far more optimal paths and other branches that will do the same thing but not leave you with time wasted or injuries that will haunt you the rest of your life.

any serving guys in this thread, i need some advice

basically my former batallion had a hiring freeze, and almost ceased to exist, because the goverment thinks its better to fund old people and sandniggers. Most got let go or forced to move somewhere else. I got moved to another battalion as a fucking desk job

i really feel like quitting, as i have no interest in what i am currently doing, and im looking at deployment next year and they wont offer me a different job until after.

its way easier to search for other jobs when youre in the system than being civilian, but im going to waste at least a year in my position.

these guys has high expectations for me. I dont want to burn any bridges, because its a small army and your reputation can easily get around if you get known to fuck someone over. But still, i was forced in this position, it was never my choice.

how much do i lose/gain by staying/leaving and is it worth it?

Training Management is slightly better paid + you get the chance to do more interesting work but it's mainly shore based and has very little involvement in actually navy life.

USMC is weird for commission because the standard cut off age is lower than the Army (28 vs 33 right now, give or take) but you can actually commission in the Marines up to 34 with a waiver. No not at all. I shot before I joined but with no knowledge whatsoever. I came into it open minded and didn't have bad old habits, so that can help out.

Generally the most important thing is being taught correctly. 99% of the military doesn't know good marksmanship, and pseudoscience is rampant throughout. You'll have dudes who think 'maximum ordinate' doesn't exist and that a round 'spins upward' and shit.

Took me about 2 years before I ended up finally going to school. A year and a half to get into sniper section.

The reality of the Army is that its 95% to get schools. You can be a brand new private who gets automatically sent to recce/sniper/scout section in an infantry battalion, and go to sniper school asap and pass. So there is no preset expected timeframe before going, try to asap.

>>35058041
As I said above, its luck and volunteering at the right time. Fill out and finish your packet asap.

If you specifically want to be airborne, get an option 4 on your contract. Try picking up RASP or 18X in basic, if you grab it before you join it extends your contract 1.5 to 2.5 years more than a normal contract. Meaning less reenlistment, PCS, and ETS options. You want options, you might hate your job, you might hate your unit, you may hate the Army.

As far as best school, no idea, I've only attended the Benning school. I hear the NG sniper school is ideal because a huge emphasis is put on teaching and preparing rather than tests and go/no-go's. Going in blind sucks, where as the NG cozy you up to it.

1A3 Comms Operator

Had I known though I'd rather gone 1A9 or 1U cause sensor operator is way more fun. You get to shoot the guns on the AC130 or be chopper gunner, or at the very least direct air strikes/mark targets.

Yeah, remember it's a volunteer service, so he/she can't actually make you take a job you don't want to. Just tell them you're very firm on some choices and that you're willing to walk away too. Of course don't be a dick about it but don't fold. It's a big decision and you shouldn't be forced into it.
>>
>>35064644
During basic you do. I have literally not shot a gun since basic. When I got to my unit they made me a driver so I just spend all day sitting in a gay ass Bradley while the dismounts get to clear buildings and shit. According to my leadership though we have some range days coming up.

Anecdote: I just got back from NTC (Look it up if you don't know what it is) and I didn't fire a single round.

No I don't regret being Infantry. I joined to satisfy my /k/ boner and so far it has been fulfilled. If anything it has been over fulfilled.

Yeah. 13F are kind of like medics in that they are their own little group but are also often attached to Infantry. If you are a FISTer you'll probably either be your own team rolling around looking for targets to laze or attached to a platoon to provide extra air and artillery assets to them. 13F seems like a pretty chill MOS if you want some independence and a small team to work with.

Infantry, Ranger and SF are three VERY different things. Definitely not SF though becguys.ause SF is a meme to get people to do MOS's people don't want to do. If you didn't know, despite what they say if you fail your 18x contract (Which you likely will) you get reclassed to needs of the Army and trust me. Seriously, take my word for it from experience. It is never going to be a reclass to infantry. Ranger is a safe bet. They wont reclass you if you fail. If I wasn't infantry I probably would have gone 13F or some super sham MOS like fueler. Like I mean they literally just hand you the pump and you do it yourself. Fuck those

yes, you will do push ups and sit ups almost all week. If you have good genetics ( are/have been in solid physical fit form before) then BCT can get you back into pretty good shape. Enough for Airborne and other similar schools? Definitely. Enough for SOF and other top tier schools? Most likely not, may need at least a few months of preparation if not several. Depends are your Genes and work ethic.
>>
>>35068915
A few months? Maybe I have good genes (I'm probably average), but if you improve your push/sit up count by one a day you'll be making PFTs in no time, that's how I did it.

God damn retarded.

The most lenient weed standards are in the air force and they'd probably tell you to fuck off after admitting that.

The military doesn't need people in the slightest right now. People are clamoring to get in because it is easy money, you get the gi bill, and you have a minuscule chance of getting deployed.

You'll swear in and contract the first time you go to MEPS if you do well on your tests and nothing holds you back. You do all the necessary tests, medical, and security stuff before sitting with the counselor, that's when they go over vacancies. There is tremendous pressure too pick your job then and there, if you decline and are otherwise greenlit for service, they denote you as QNE (Qualified Not Enlisted) and quit wasting time on you. If they dislike you, or just for the hell of it, they can prevent you from enlisting for wasting their time, at least for that branch, or possibly at that MEPS.

Get a top 5-10 list now and stick to it.

Are women even in the military? Or do they have their own little pretend military while men do all the work?
>>
>>35072442
They do all jobs in countries like Britain and Australia where the military is just larping.

Women can serve in infantry in the USA since we also don't have any wars going on. They qualify for SOF but there are literally 0 (0) women in SOF infantry.

Granted SOF is kinda rat racey and depends on slots, so just projecting the percent of females in infantry (already very small) onto how many infantry men get accepted in sof (smaller) alone would justify no women being in there.

Smug women are the bane of my existence so I hope to one day fulfill my dream of being in the most misogynist field in the country and show off my patriarchy power levels.

The smartest and dumbest soldiers I've ever met were female.

I haven't personally had any issues with them, but like 80 % of the military I work in an office where what's between your legs doesn't really matter.

Most of the reasons people have for worrying about an integrated military are stupid. All that matters is mission effectiveness.
>>
>>35072557
>Most of the reasons people have for worrying about an integrated military are stupid. All that matters is mission effectiveness.

Most of the problems I see people having (myself included) is that their inclusion compromises that mission effectiveness.
>>
>>35068403
My company of 155 had 8 people not pass basic their first time, not including the handful of idiots who got chaptered out. Of those 4, 6 were recycled to another company and two were discharged. Army BCT is exceedingly easy as long as you are in decent shape, and even if you're not (I wasn't) I wouldn't call it hard.

Sitting at reception for two weeks waiting to even start basic was awful though.

It doesn't though, in the vast majority of the military that *actually exists*.

Half the arguments against females in the military are based around "muh buddy carries in combat", which is not a realistic scenario in most jobs, and frankly most of my male coworkers would struggle with that task as well.

When you strip away all of the anti-female arguments that are baseless sexism or just plain idiocy, you end up with a small number of reasons that females cause issues, none of them particularly common.

I signed a 09S contract for OCS a few weeks ago, ship out in October. I'm hoping to branch infantry (11a) and transition into the Ranger Regiment or SF once I'm O2 promotable. The reason for these career goals is that I want to do some high-speed shit, but I'm realizing I may have made a mistake in getting a 09S contract. From what I'm reading, SOF officers are almost always operational for less than two years due to career concerns. Is it possible to stay operational as an officer longer by making into a Tier 1/SMU (ranger recon or delta)? Either way, this doesn't seem very realistic and I'm starting to wish I had just done an option 40 or 18x contract a while ago. Thoughts?
>>
>>35072983

>Thoughts?

You probably won't land infantry in the first place. When you inevitably fail on your path to doing coolguystuff and decide to grow up, you'll thank yourself for commissioning instead of enlisting. You'll still be able to have a successful upper middle class future as an officer, as opposed to the wannabe-coolguy enlisted who tend to just crash and burn.
>>
>>35073035
Statistically you're right, but I've got a 300 APFT and had a 3.9 in college so I'd be surprised if I wasn't at the top of the OML and thus able to branch infantry. You're point about officer being a better career is well taken, however.

So I'm going to commission as an Army officer in 2019, but I have yet to sign off on a branch. Before signing a contract with ROTC, I was an 11B, and it was an alright job. I can't decide if I want to stay Infantry, go armor, or maybe a different field. What's the best thing I can branch as an Army officer?
>>
>>35073611

1. Not a realistic concern with birth control.
2. That's not how recruiting works. By deepening the recruiting pool you can be more selective while getting the same total numbers, or achieve the same numbers at a lower cost.
>>
>>35071387
My mos is competetive. Can I sign for it and wait for a slot, or do you have to wait for a slot to sign?
>>
>>35073700
If it's open, it's open; if it's not, it's not. If it's not open, and you don't sign, they may not bring you back.

The way it works is they project an X number of an MOS for the year, month, etc. based on manning levels and projected growth and retention. Then the schools get set up with an X number of sessions, with an X number of seats. You need to be qualified, and there needs to be a seat for you; no seat no dice. Vacancies change daily, best bet is to wait until the beginning of the month or fiscal year, which is October as quotas generally reset.

The most fun imo would be aviation and the best for career and climbing to the higher ranks would most likely be infantry
