During the post-Sandy Hook ammo shortage, what calibers could you still commonly find in stores? I'm thinking of adding a panic-proof gun to the arsenal. Something in a less common caliber that I know I can find when everyone else is buying up .223/556 and 9mm by the pallet.
>>
I recall .17 HMR, 20 Guage, and .22-250 still being readily available.
>>
>>35041605
For rifles, all the fudd hunting calibers like .270, .243, 30-30. etc. Lots of .40S&W tended to hang out on the shelves at Walmart. Most other calibers were available at gun stores local to me, but at inflated prices, like $20/box for 9mm.
>>
>>35041605
>everyone else is buying up .223/556 and 9mm by the pallet.

I'm one of those people so I don't have to give a fuck what is on store shelves or if there is a panic.

BUY IT CHEAP AND STACK IT DEEP.
>>
>>35041605
12 gauge. It's cheap, everyplace has it, and all the mall ninjas think they're too tacticool for it.
>>
>>35041699
Same here. I'm about a decade ahead of the panic game on all calibers except for 22lr which I barely shoot anyway. Sandy hook barely effected me.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but 762x39 and 223 were the worst normal calibers effected, and I don't remember it lasting very long with them. I think AR food was gone for longer though.
I'm pretty sure that 308/54r were still around plenty. And anything shotgun was available too.

Carry a .40 S&W pistol like the M&P. When the shelves are bare of food, the ammo is all gone, you'll still be able to walk in and they'll be trying to sell that shit at a discount to get someone to buy it.
>>
>>35041605

7.62x39 in my area went down in price ( by a few cents ) during the whole thing. I was able to get boxes at the stores for abound 4.50$.
>>
>>35041605

.40 S&W master race.

>no limits
>always available
>always cheap

>have Beretta CX4 in 9mm
>can't find ammo
>some guy offers $1500 for it cuz "obama gonna ban it"
>sell it to him
>find a brand new CX4 in .40 a few months later for $619+tax
>have no problem feeding it

>>35041844

This. Literally have an ammo can full of .40 S&W pistols. LGS can't give them away half the time. I've got two Hi Points in .40 he sold me for $60 each because he paid $50 for them and nobody would even buy them at $75-100.
>>
>>35041605
The only panic-proof caliber is the caliber you have stored, retard.
>>
>>35041905
Shh. Grown ups are talking.
>>
>>35041605
.444 is always stocked at my local big box stores
>tfw no one wants to kill dinosaurs
>>
>>35041605
No matter what happens my lgs always has a few boxes of: 50 BMG, 7.5 French, 32 ACP, and 22 mag. No clue why
>>
>>35041605
.45 LC, .38 special +P, and .357 mag will still be on the shelves in 2100 when Cyberbama Clinton bans high capacity blackpowder derringer assault guns

Not so sure about the 38 special. It's like there's some other guy who tries to my by rounds when I'm going to grab boxes.

Hurricane hits your town, looters are about. You have to go out and fend for yourself for food and supplies.

What weapon do you grab for?

.40 S&W is about 20% more expensive than 9mm right now though

no they aren't, because i live in a suburb.
>>
Fudd calibera. Most my handguns are in 9, so I have a small stockpile. I own a 380 lcp(gym bag gun) and a box of HST, and 15 ish fmjs. My shotguns are in 12, I have 100ish rounds of buck, 50ish slugs and a, and a bunch of cheap shells. It's jut about stocking smart when you have the cash.

I loved the Sandy Hoax .22 LR shortage for only one reason. It successfully demonstrated that for any good/product you don't need a real shortage, only rumor of a shortage, to actually have a shortage. This counts for any good/product, including food.

Imagine if there was a rumor of a food shortage. You're not the only person thinking "I better get to the grocery store and stock up." All of a sudden a few people own all the food and supply chains can't keep up. Things would get spooky real quick.

>>
>>35042194
personal anecdote:

I live in a very peaceful middle class suburb that's like 30-45min away from the nearest city.

i live in the midwest and a few years back a tornado hit a couple miles down the road from me.

People who heard about it on the news were literally driving out to try and loot the place for days afterwards. People had to block off roads and form neighborhood watch check points just to keep their shit safe. We haven't had a homicide in 20yrs but we still had looters will be shot signs, everybody armed, the whole nine yards. And that's for a small occurrence that didn't even really strain let alone disrupt the community.

I'd be cautious operating under that assumption if shit goes down.

>>
>>35042310
Where were the would-be looters from and who were they? Local tweakers, big city niggers... who?
>>
>>35041605
.38 Special, .30-30, 20 Gauge, and hunting rounds that weren't .30-06, .243, .308, and .270 were still around after each big scare.

9mm, 5.56, 7.62x39, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP were all gone. .308, .30-06, .270, and .243 were also all gone after the previous calibers ran out.

Everyone should have a Winchester 94 or Marlin 336 and a .38 Special or .357 Magnum revolver just because you can still feed them after big scares and keep your AR/AK and semi auto pistol ammo in reserve for when you really need it.
>>
>>35041750

This was my experience also.

No .22, 9mm, 223/556, .308, or the like. Occasional .45 and .40.

All the practice birdshot you could carry, almost the same for buck and slug rounds.

InnaCity: .45LC was the only pistol caliber readily available. .300 Win Mag and 7mm Mag were always available. .22-250 and .243 were usually available. Birdshot was always around, but slugs and buckshot were hard to find.
>>
>>35041605
9x18 mak unironically. Places like academy have metric fucktons of cheap steel-cased Russian shit on the shelves, and it'll stay there because you'll likely be the only person with 100 miles interested in it. Additionally, most guns that use it don't care about ammo quality, so long as you keep them clean.
>>35042292
Slavic master race
>>
>>35042623
9x18 was available in my area at first, but then completely disappeared. My guess is people just started buying up whatever was there even if they didn't have a gun to shoot it with.

>werth mor than gold when SHTF, hurr durr.
>>
>>35042576
the stores near me always have 45LC to feed my circut judge ,the common cals zip out overnight
sometimes 12ga slugs are not available during normal states
the 410 @ 20ga shells have dust ontop of the boxes.

yeah, hasn't happened by me yet, but I plan on buying a little bit every time I stop by, just to build up my own stockpile. I guess the lesson to be learned from this thread is to have a respectable amount of your own ammo instead of waiting till SHTF to find some.

40 for handguns then fudd calibers like 7mm .270 etc

The entire reason I bought my LCR in .357 instead of .38 was so that I *could* use .357 in a pinch if I had to. It tacked an extra hundred bucks or so onto the price of the gun, but I'm still happy I did it.

Pre 64 Post War Winchester 1894 is arguably the best American made lever gun ever. You've got the iconic 1894, but it's made out of modern materials with the best craftsmanship. I really like winchesters, but marlins are nice too. My dream gun is an 1894 trapper model.

pre-1964 is a meme, post-1964 guns are functionally fine compared to their pre-1964 counterparts.

They're made better in my opinion. Maybe I'm just fucking petty and don't like that Winchester wanted to fuck with a time proven design.
