ITT Post information about supposedly projects that are black.

>Aurora was a rumored mid-1980s American reconnaissance aircraft.

>The U.S. government has consistently denied such an aircraft was ever built. Aviation and space reference site Aerospaceweb.org concluded, "The evidence supporting the Aurora is circumstantial or pure conjecture, there is little reason to contradict the government's position." Former Skunk Works director Ben Rich confirmed that "Aurora" was simply a myth in "Skunk Works", a book detailing his days as the director. Mr. Rich wrote that a young colonel working in the Pentagon arbitrarily assigned the name "Aurora" to the funding for the B-2 bomber design competition and somehow the name was leaked to the media.

>Others come to different conclusions. In 2006, veteran black project watcher and aviation writer Bill Sweetman said, "Does Aurora exist? Years of pursuit have led me to believe that, yes, Aurora is most likely in active development, spurred on by recent advances that have allowed technology to catch up with the ambition that launched the program a generation ago."

Aurora was a black research project of unknown content and aim. It was not some super special space fighter nonense.

There would have been no need to bring the SR-71 back into service if Aurora actually existed as the sequential fart powered arrow UFO it is alleged to be.

I always just assumed spy planes got completely replaced with satellites. Unless we go full WW3 and targeting satellites becomes a thing, they're better in every capacity

>In the FY 1986 DOD budget request under the heading "air breathing reconnaissance", there was a
line item labeled "Aurora" funded for $80 million with a projected spending level in FY 1987 of $2.272
billion. In his 1994 biography Skunk Works, Ben Rich claims that the line item for Aurora was for the
Advanced Technology Bomber competition. The ATB competition was won by Northrop over
Lockheed's bid in late 1981, producing the B-2 Spirit bomber. By 1983, it had already received funding
for construction.

Getting recon on a target RIGHT FUCKING NOW rather than waiting hours-days for a sat to be overhead? Having recon assets that aren't gonna eat an ASAT attack day one? There are uses for spy aircraft.
>>
>>35041436
An interesting one (to me) is the F-117's "companion". Apparently still in service, its job was to assist the F-117 in ingress and egress (tracking radars, comms, etc), find targets, and coordinate the strikes. Some rumors state that it also did a bit of armed SEAD as well as electronic.

The thing that makes it seem more possible to me is the AARS/Quartz project. It was meant as a companion to the B-2, to help it as described above, only on a larger scale. A similar, small-scale version makes sense to me.

The "companion" is newer than the F-117, and uses more sophisticated stealth- still useful in the modern day.
>>
>>35041436
SB-3 ghoul.

But we don't talk about that.
>>
>>35043469
Any other information on this? Never heard of that before but it would make sense. Any timeframe on when it could have been developed?
>>
>>35043612
Roughly around the same time as the F-117, but slightly later, which is why the stealth is more advanced. Say 5-10 years later, probably late eighties.

There's lots of rumors and speculation around the internet, but nothing definite. If you search for F-117 companion, you can find plenty of guesses. If it exists, it is important enough to keep fairly secret.

out of curiosity, is there any record of an attempt, proposal, or even brainstorming for an aircraft capable of NEO by the US gov?

I haven't heard of any but the idea seems rather intuitive, only thing better than high altitude reconnaissance would be doing it from just outside, or maybe satellite land.

They proposed a lot of crazy and too advanced ideas back then, be kinda odd if there's no record of attempts at the general premise.

Do you mean something like the X-20 Dyna-Soar? It needed a booster to get into space.

Also, while it wasn't Tacit Blue, it's a good example of the potential capabilities of the design:

>The Northrop Tacit Blue was a technology demonstrator aircraft created to demonstrate that a low observable stealth surveillance aircraft with a low probability of intercept radar and other sensors could operate close to the forward line of battle with a high degree of survivability.

I'm pretty sure all the money for skunkworks is going into Elon Musk kids trust funds at this point. Why buy a 400$ hammer when you can buy 400$ stock in a growth industry and get dividends each quarter through a holding company. It's a win win win.
