>I just bought my first gun so now I need to validate my purchase by shitting on every other gun on the market
Why do poorfags always make threads like this.

Only bolt-gun made with decent gas control, fully shrouded cartridge base
>>
Model 70's are all nice- even the push-feed versions.

If you guys like bolt-action rifles, now is a great time to buy a used one.
>>

It's 2017 boi.
>>
>>35036204
You telling me if everyone had to have one long range rifle in their closet the Model 70 wouldn't be one of the top contenders?

Also I don't own that Model 70 I took that image off google images. I'm thinking of buying one because I've always heard they are the ultimate "if you could only own one hunting rifle" gun.
>>
>>35036329
Not until and unless Remington unfucks their QC issues.

>Roots from the mauser 98
>Perfectly balanced
>Controlled round feed
>Not stupidly priced like sako's

Anyone who disagrees clearly doen't know what they're talking about, let alone even handled an M70.
>>
Oh yeah a shitty bolt gun with tiny capacity and awkward scope mount is far superior to a 30 magazine fed ar 15 thats both cheaper and more readily available.

Nothing says everyman like more pricey and less functional
>>
>>35036342
>Roots from the mauser 98
From the M1917 actually.
Winchester created the 54d based on the M1917 actions they had left in inventory and eventually after ~3 generations it bacame the model 70. Remington did the same to create the model 700 rifles.

M70's are like a painting. When I see one, It's like I'm looking at a farmer in Wyoming with a rough beard, kinda old. It's fall and he's gotta hunt for the winter months where his old pickup won't take him into town so he needs to down some big game before the snow really sets in.

So he grabs his old M70, straps up, and marches into the tall pines for a couple days of tracking Elk and Moose.

The M70 is an american dream.

That's what I do, wait for Field & Stream to give up on selling it and buy it when they clearance them for $800.
>>
>>35036427
damn

Buy whatever you like.

Anyway- back to the bolt guns...Seems like all the black-gun types have dumped their bolt action rifles, and they aren't moving, so now's the time to buy one.
>>

It would be a sako

Theres a model 70 at the LGS, real old. Solid Walnut stock. its in .300 H&H.

Its only $980

I'm thinking of going back and taking my Browning A-bolt to trade.

>TFW picked up a Model 70 in 7mm Rem Mag with custom-ported muzzle, immaculate bore and $400 scope on it in a pawn shop for $350
I don't know how that rifle ended up in that pawn shop but it can't be a pleasant story. Somebody loved that gun at one point.

Took an elk with it last fall.

Shut up Phil you apparently think Remington makes the Model 70

But yeah my guess is dad/grandpa died and his kid/grandkid didn't give a shit about guns and pawned the thing.
>>
>>35036391

And don't forget, underpowered for everything except coyotes and southern whitetails, and won't shoot anywhere near as well as a bolt gun in the same price range.

>WHARBLEGARBLE my cast aluminum & shit plastic blaster is way better than heirloom quality because semiautosemiautosemiauto

Bolt guns are passed down, bolt guns symbolize a way of life, and the M70 is one of the best bolt guns ever built. It's undoubtedly a standard in the world of rifles. All other long range, big game, bolt action rifles are compared to it.

>hur dur my AR-15
don't listen to these plebs, they've never held a working mans gun.
>>
>>35037638
Shhhh... don't tell him that some people buy guns for reasons *other* than thinking the RAHOWA is going to start next Tuesday.
>>
>>35036583
>>35037659
This argument is actually kind of reasonable.

I'm not saying I made the argument, or that I support it, but it holds up.

If the gun is not easily accessible/widely known, it can kind of be thrown out of the consideration.

Obviously, if you go to custom manufacturers, you can get the best of everything. Private luthiers make the best $10,000+ guitars, private cobblers make the best shoes, private gunsmiths make the best guns. These can't be possibly considered in this argument, not only is their stock too small to supply that many people, but their prices are beyond a normal person's possibilities.

sako is right between there. they are obviously not some private gunsmith, but they aren't fuckin Winchester either. Their prices are outside a normal range, and their stock isn't at that volume either.

When considering a question like "if everyone had to have one", you have to work under reasonable parameters, because it involves everyone.
>>
>>35037688
>what is X and why is Y?
>by the way the criteria for X I made up clearly places Y as the winner

You just wanted people to agree with you, you faggot.
>>
>>35037704
Again, I didn't make the argument, and I don't necessarily support it.

I do not think the M70 is the "one rifle in everyone's closet" or whatever. I think if everyone had to have a rifle in their closet is should be a .22 long rifle of some sort, not a big game killer like the M70. But that's not the point I'm here to make.

All I'm saying is the logic is there. If we can include luxury/enthusiast grade products, then arguments like these are basically just "what's the most expensive version of this".

You have to work within reasonable parameters
>>
>>35036391
Yet in the distant future there will be someone providing for their family with the rifle passed down through generations. The same probably won't be said for your average AR-15.
>>
>>35037722
The ar 15 is a lot more rust resistant, the m70 will be pitted out and the wood cracked but grandpaws ar 15 will still look new due to alum reciever and nitride barrel
>>
>>35036305
>now is a great time to buy a used one
why, what's going on that makes m70's good right now?

Because at the moment, within that smae price hover, I got CZ 550's, Tikka woof stock versions, Savage, and Browning that are within that bracket.
What makes the model 70 stand out on top?
>>
>>35038320
It's simply an icon, like Glock.
>>
>>35038325
>>35038325
Maybe if they didnt move the production to fucking brazil.
>>
>>35036340
Remington doesn't own winchester you dolt.
>>
M70's are like a painting. When I see one, It's like I'm looking at a neckbeard in middle America with a rough beard trailing down his double chin and fatty neck, about kinda 28 and still living with mom. It's fall and he's gotta go to the range for about 40 shots worth for the winter months where his frail body won't handle shooting the gun because the recoil hurts when his hands are cold so he needs to barley print 3moa and frame the target before the snow really sets in.

So he grabs his old M70, straps up, and marches into the the local club for a about an hour of mostly tetting up his target and sweeping everyone on the line like a retarded moose.

The M70 is a gun collectors dream.
>>
Are the newest production models like the pre '64 ones? Fuck that push feed shit

I have 150 year old black powder guns that aren't pitted, wtf are you going on about?
>>
>>35038512

M70 has collectors value and maybe some practicality for hunters but don't fucking kid yourself that it's everyman rifle. That title deservedly goes to the AR. And you can get a goddam ar 10 in .308 with a stainless barrel cheaper than the so called **everymans** rifle so GTFO
>>
>>35038512
Also if you actually go elk hunting it's going to end up best to shit, wood and bluing weather's pretty fast

>>
>>35036413
>implying the M1917 isn't a fucking Mauser

Summer pls go
>>
>>35038781
Not that anon but yes the m1917 is based on the mauser, but has quite a few alterations and modifications.
>>
>>35038781
The m1917 is a P13 which has a Mauser style action but with a number of changes. So while yes it is a relative, it is not a mauser copy.

Also would like to throw Tikka in here as the best bolt gun ever.
