The people on this forum who own Pythons are fond of them and probably not parting with them. Try Armslist or Gunbroker.
>>
>>35035053
They're on Gunbroker all the time if you want to pony up $3000-$5000 for one.

They're not that uncommon, I see at least 2-3 per month come up for private sale, but that's in Ausfailia.

Just an expensive toy really.

Those are starting bids. You're not going to find a functional Python under $1k.
>>
>>35035237
No, not really. The last reasonably priced python I ever saw was $800 because it had severe holster wear on one side. Solid mechanically but ugly. That was 10 years ago. Pythons aren't worth the money.

What exactly does a Python do for $2500 that a vintage pinned & recessed Smith won't do for $700?

theres one for $3000 at the gunstore down the street from my house. And an andaconda for $5000
>>
>>35035952
Be a Python.
>>
>>35035952
Practically, not much.
You can get lots of revolvers tricked up to compete and outdo a python, probably for cheaper than buying one. They'll be easier to work on, maintain and you won't worry about damaging them.
But they'll never look like a Python. They'll never be a Python. Some of use are happy to pay thousands of dollars just for the content feeling of having a Python, if that's not you then buy a different gun.

I not a fan (visually) of Colts and stuff hanging from the barrel (early Hand Ejector is more my thing). For me only appeal is in build quality, but since you can get something with similar quality and much better durability what's the point.
>>
The python holds no interest from me as long as the MR.73 exists.
>>
>>35037191
New Manurhin is made by in a completely different factory by people whose only connection to the guns used by GIGN is the name. Guess they're not too different from Colt, huh?

>but muh quality!

Do you have any sources that show CURRENT PRODUCTION that MR73s are as memetically awesome as the GIGN revolvers? I ask because I have honestly never seen one used in any kind of competitive shooting in America, even PPC. Considering that money is no object to people who compete seriously (The ~$2.8k needed for a Manurhin is around the same as what people pay for a tuned 1911 or a good kitted out AR), I find the absence of the MR73 to be strange.
>>
>>35037348
Competitors use 8-shooters.
>>
>>35037421
The Distinguished Revolver division in PPC specifically mandates that your revolver needs to be chambered in a caliber that can accept .38 Special, to hold no more than 6 rounds, and to have an unmodified factory trigger as sold by the manufacturer. The rules are written in such a way that practically beg for everyone to be running MR73s if they are as good as people say, yet the reality is that the overwhelming majority of people competing in that division are using Smith and Wessons.
>>
>>35035354
I'm so glad I bought mine during the recession.

I had just lost my job, so maybe spending food money on guns wasn't the wisest choice in hindsight, but I'll never part with it.
>>
>>35036062
Basically. If you don't care about the brand and really want to spend 5 grand on a revolver that might actually be worth it look at korths
>>
>>35037535
Just because majority of people use something doesn't make it better. Similarly how most guys use 1911 despite there being better pistols on the market.

$1500 seems to be the lowest ive seen for ones with worn bluing or fucked up bubba duracoat finishes

$2000 is about average price for a used, non collectible early year blued 6"

$2200-$2500 for a nice condition later year 6" blued

stainless and nickel 6" can be found for $2500-$3000

2" models go for $2800 - $3500 depending on finish

4" ones are same prices as 6" ones usually, sometimes +$100 to +$300

hope that helps

yes you see $4,000 6" blued 1984 MINTY OMG pythons on gunbroker. no, nobody buys them.

if ORIGINAL box and paperowrk comes with the gun, add $100-$200. if colt letter also there, +$100

good luck. best bet is to place a WTB in paper printout at a gun range where fudds and old timers go, and they might sell you one priced 10 years ago since they live in the past

If you're new to guns, getting an old expensive collectible isn't perhaps the best pick for a first gun.

The Colt Python was conceived of as a high grade sporting revolver, featuring pretty and glossy finishes, a slick and light trigger, and an expertly crafted progressive twist bore.
On the other hand, it is rather expensive, there's few spare parts to be found, and the lockwork is a bit flimsy, it'll go out of time with enough shooting. They'll require specific maintenance to last if you're gonna shoot a lot.

They've gone up radically in price because A), Colt collectors are the biggest fucking autists, and B), people are enamored with a really shitty TV show where one of the characters carries it.
>>
>>35035952
The trigger, I guess, but it's not like an old S&W won't have a good trigger by it's own merits.

This.

I think the GP100 Match Champion is a good example of what a modern equivalent of the Python could be on the lower end, the standard revolver from a lineup, but a bunch of polish and modification to make it a nice target gun.
>>
>>35037822
Because 1911's still have the best out of the box triggers on the market and the 2011 gives it capacity comparable to other modern handguns.

>>35038562
>it'll go out of time with enough shooting

I have seen this first hand with multiple pythons.
The Hand starts to peen and timing goes to shit quickly, people continue to shoot it because lockup still seems tighter than their smith even though you are causing damage to your cylinder and stop at that point.
>>
>>35038621

I hate the etched/stamped barrel. It looks tacky, which is a shame, the revolver has nice lines.

>>
>>35035237
Dude security six is the way to go. I got one in California for $600 and I love it....other than the stiff double action. Paying over $1k for an old revolver is insane.
>>
>>35039365
I'm wondering if you could take a regular GP100 barrel and have it shortened and machined down to achieve a similar effect, but leave it unmarked?

Though personally I don't mind the 'billboard' on the side that much.
What really bothers me is that the Match Champion is only available in stainless and in 4.2", would really love to see a 6" and I think they should make some blued ones.

Also given that they gave the SP101 the Match Champion treatment as well, I wonder if they'll do it for other revolvers, a Redhawk Match Champion or Super Blackhawk Match Champion would the tits.
>>
It's a prestige piece and a safe queen. Straight up. As someone said, the lockwork can go out of time and there aren't many parts nor are there many smiths left who know how to work on them since they are all handfitted. I shoot my Smith and Wessons better than I do my Python. But it's a nice revolver with a good trigger. I only shoot .38 out of mine and not too often.

>people who have never even participated in competition

The reason people use 1911s in competition is because they are the best guns available for certain divisions. If the MR73 was as good as the /k/ memes claim it is, it would have at least some presence in PPC, IPSC revolver, Steel Challenge or some other kind of competition. It doesn't though. Even European revolver competition is dominated by Smith and Wesson, to say nothing of the American competitive scene.
>>
>>35041834
The MR73 does have SOME presence in Euro PPC, they turn up in gunshops relatively often (though of course it'll look like nothing with all the S&Ws and Rugers there).

I think a PPC champion in Sweden shot with a 4" MR73 (with Swedish flag grips).
>>
>>35035274
But with a trigger and fit that is nowhere as nice. Iv owned a 82 8" python, a 97 6" 696 and shot my fathers S&w 19. God I loved that python.

You don't really have to do all that when you can buy one of the old style barrels, but yeah. Bowen, Gemini, Clements etc will all reprofile or slab side a barrel. Hell Clements with turn an old .38spl GP100 into a 10mm if you have time to wait
>>

It doesn't help that it was a 90s S&W honestly. I'm not going to say Smith is better, just that late 90s Smith's are fucking terrible.
