Evening /k/, I'm trying to get into cowboy action shooting and I was wondering if any of you had any tips going in. Currently I'm looking and picking a lever action rifle, a shotgun, and a revolver towards this end. What are some good guns to look at for this? What qualities should I be looking for in said guns? Given the choice between a short, handy rifle with a 10 round capacity and a longer rifle with a 13 round capacity which one should I opt for? All input is appreciated.

My setup is:
Uberti Cattleman with new hammer and base pin to get rid of safeties.
Marlin 1894 in .45 Colt
20 gauge SxS with true hammers.
I'll post photos if thread is up when I get home
>>35032402
Interesting, why did you get rid of the safeties? Did they affect performance?
>>35032496
Autism. I have Colt SAA and I wanted the Cattleman to be as close to the same as I could get.
>>35032215
will you be my huckleberry?
>>35032549
I'm your huckleberry
>>35032215
You got to pick a nickname to join the SASS. Faggot McFaggoty might be available.
>>35032975
Maybe Sheriff Smegma.
You aint shit until you use dual colt walkers, 1887, and a spencer carbine
I can't think of anything more autistic than grown men dressing up as cowboys
I advise you to handload because cowboy action factory ammo is shit and expensive, loading straight walled cartridges is ezpz and fun, and it's a great way to learn load development without the risk of blowing your fingers off since the pressures involved are so low.
Also this is my 1851 Confederate Navy. Black powder is super fun as well.
>>35033143
I already have a Walker, it's quite fun but not very practical.
Grab a cowboy marlin if you can find one, otherwise start off with a Rossi 92, just find one local, or order from a place that accepts returns because while Rossi can make a fine rifle, they can also make lemons and their QC is terrible.
I had a new vaquero when I was messing around with cowboy shooting, but I never fully committed and didn't buy a second pistol or a shotgun.
>>35033254
So true. I load BP .38 special for my 1851 conversion, BP .45 Colt for my SAA, BP .45-70 for my Marlin 1895 but the absolute best is BP brass shotgun shells.
>>35033277
Exactly, look at the rest of the loadout.
If you can do that its fuckin stylish.
>>35033172
How about grown men dressing up as special forces and arguing on the internet about who's equipment that they'll never actually use is better? At least the Cowboy larpers look like they're having fun.
>>35033696
Plus cowboy larping has a certain charm to it, anyways most of the people at sass seem to be around 40+ years on average and are married. So theyre not complete losers, theyre like weebs who've gotten a breddy good deal in life.
>tldr: fuck off the sass people are friendly and cool.

Marlin 1894 seems to be the choice of fast action cowboys, never fired one myself but everyone with a speed record worth a fuck uses one. Anybody know the reason for this?
>>35033805
The action is pretty short. It's basically a pistol cartridge lever gun.
>>35033805
>>35033890
Sounds appealing, I would like to know how good the sights are and how it holds up to wear and tear though. I don't plan on using my cowboy action guns solely for competition but for innawoods as well.
>>35034384
I have three Marlin lever guns. All were bought used and were made before the Remington shit show. They are fine weapons. Excellent fit and finish, accurate, good sights. Every bit as good as my pre '64 Winchester '94.
>>35035176
What of post Remington buy out Marlins?
>>35035208
Well, I don't have one so I can only repeat what others have said or written. There were quality issues when they moved production. It's improved a lot or so I've heard.
>>35035265
This thread sums it up pretty well:

>>35035208
no complaints here
>>35035325
Compared to other lever action rifles, how would you say the smoothness of the lever throw rates against them? Better than average?
>>35032215
SASS usually requires two pistols, a carbine/rifle in a pistol cartridge, and a period shotgun. You'll need some period looking clothing depending on witch way you want to go with it (authentic, b-western, or some other variant)
Start small. Most events if you show up without 100% of what you need there will be someone to help you. Choose an alias that will fit your persona. Find a local group, and contact them. They can help you with everything from guns to leather.
I intend to get into Cowboy Action Shooting some day, but I've had to put it on hold. I have a single Ruger Vaquero 357 in stainless, with the Bisley grip. It's a great gun, and I want another. I had the guy at the local shop do a trigger job on it, an it's smooth as fuck now. It's heavy as fuck, too, though. I want another, some sort of 1873, and a double barrel. I know the pump action 1895 might be faster, but I ain't trying to be the fastest.

forgot my damn image
>>35035540
only lever gun ive shot sadly so not much help there.
>rossi 92's evaporated because of huehuehues forgetting to file ATF paper work or something
>wow marlin has started making 1894's again
>only .44, no .357
>henry's have no loading gate
>>35035549
Are there restrictions on which single action revolvers I'm allowed to use? I was considering a Schofield of some description.
>>35035667
read the SASS handbook.

>I'm too poor to buy an Uberti
>>35035659

It's really not that bad.
t. someone who wanted a loading gate but still bought a henry

Do Vaqueros have a half cock notch? The cowboy fast draw rule book seems to imply they don't.

>>35036060
No. Transfer bar.
>>35032215
My personal load out I use in matches is a pair of Taylor's Smoke Wagons in .357, an original Winchester 1892 in 44-40, and a 12 gauge Winchester 1897
>>35032215
If you want to keep things relatively economical, Ruger has a fair few cowboy wheelguns, and some in particularly attractive caliber choices.
There's the Vaquero, and the Blackhawk, the latter which is generally built like a brick shithouse and which will eat crazy hot full house loads without complaining.
Both are available in .357 Magnum, which will be cheaper than .45 Colt (though they also have this), and being able to shoot .38 Special means a fair bit cheaper still.
That's not all though, they also make a 'Convertible' variant of the Blackhawk, the .357 Magnum Convertible comes with an extra cylinder in, get this, 9mm Luger, and this all works perfectly, allowing for very modestly priced plinking and target practice, while also allowing for regular Magnum fun. Likewise, the .45 Colt convertible comes with a .45ACP cylinder

Quality isn't as fine as before, but a lot of the fuckups and bad QC and production from the era immediately afterwards has largely been fixed, one of the big things was to replace all the old machine tooling, apparently what Marlin had been doing was to keep using worn out machinery and just alter their designs' dimensions in accordance to the wear of the tooling. This is obviously not a good idea in the long run, and it started to really show.
You can pick a brand new Marlin off a shelf and not have to pray that it isn't horribly fucked up in the box, like you had to like 7 years ago.
>>35036060
No, Ruger's single action revolvers have a different lockwork, there's no halfcock or anything like that.
You can't put it on half-cock (but you also don't need to), and you can't fan the hammer, but on the other hand, the design is much stronger and safer, the transfer-bar mechanism means the gun cannot fire if dropped on it's hammer, as was absolutely possible on original Colt SAA revolvers (hence why the common practice with those guns was to just load 5 rounds and leave the empty chamber under the hammer)
Vaquero time!
>>35036157
You can fan a new Vaquero, I don't di it much, but it is possible.
>>35032215
Just looked up my local chapter. This looks like a lot of fun, although I think I'll be the youngest person there by a good two decades.
