They were acceptable as a first gun when they were below the cost of any cheap new production gun and surplus ammo was cheap and plentiful. Now that both the ammo costs as much as new production ammo and the guns rival the cost of a new gun, you are better off with getting something else as a first gun.

They are ok guns as far as first or early pieces in a milsurp collection still.

The age of nugget has long since past. They go for $250 at absolute best these days, more likely 300-400. Same as SKS, and same as SKS you will have to ask yourself: why not just get a low-tier AR?

Unless you really want a garbage milsurp to play with, avoid. And even if you do want cheap milsurp, not as a first gun, and not before owning an AR.
